June 27, 2013 - Magic in the Med (Venice)

Hi! This is the second time we (I and my wife) join Disney Cruise to Mediterranean. Last time was 2011.
It is so excited that I'll been to mediterranean again with Dsiney Magic soon.
This forum is great and I got lot of useful information.
:tink:

Do you know the schedule of show at each evening? Also, I noted in page 8 of the pre-arrival guide that "Golden Mickey" is included in Fun Aboard the Magic. Is it truth?

Hi Kelvinwyng and welcome to the Meet thread! Glad you found us!

I haven't seen anything posted about the show schedule and when I called DCL this morning, they said they don't have access to the entertainment / show schedule for the stage shows.

Thank you!
The 1st part of your B2B cruise will commence soon. Enjoy it and keep us inform on the news onboard! By the way, would you please inform us the price of photo CD for the 12 day cruise once you are onbaord.:cool1::cool1:

I am planning to book the cruise again for a trip to Greece in 2014 summer time. Is there any discount or bouns for booking on board. And, can I transfer the booking to my travel agent in order to get the onboard credit from the travel agent?:cheer2::cheer2:

I think when you book onboard that you can designate a TA at that time. So if you have one that you want to use, talk to them before you leave and ask their recommendation.

Thanks. That's what I was planning to do. However, when I called yesterday I was told that I can't cancel any tours once I board the ship. That means that if they don't have the extra tickets I'm stuck with my family being split between two tours.

I do not know why they told you that. People do cancel excursions on board and book others instead. Excursions Desk folks can work wonders. Check in with them frequently and ask, after all, we are sailing on the MAGIC!

If Disney cancels the excursion, you will get a refund. If you cancel within what I believe is three days of your sailing, you don't get a refund.

We are a family divided. My 9 year old DD wants nothing but to see the Leaning Tower. My husband and I want to see David. We booked the Florence and Pisa DCL excursion, which takes care of her, but won't help on the David front. Outside of booking a private car at an astronomical rate, do any of you who have been there before have any ideas for us?

Thanks!

Have you looked into the cost for private booking? We are using Rome in Limo for our day in Rome and they also do pick-up in La Spezia for Florence and Pisa. You might want to look at that as an option and see if they could work with you to get you to see / do both. I will say that when we were faced with a similar dilemma in 2007, we opted for the Leaning Tower for the boys because we knew they would appreciate it much more than Florence. My younger son was 9 at the time, the older one just turned 11. It was a fabulous experience - a half-day in Pisa, and honestly, we had spent a full day in Rome the day before and were happy to have a shorter day. In this itinerary, Rome will be a full-day following, so depending on what you do in Rome, you may want to do just Pisa. We decided in 2007 to save Florence for when they were older if we had an opportunity to return - so now in 2013, we are going to Florence and are doing the Florence and Michelangelo tour because we want to see the David - not the imitation one they have elsewhere in the city (and we saw a replica in Copenhagen in 2010 which was cool). The boys will appreciate Florence much more now that they have had more history classes (the older one has had AP Euro History, the younger one will be taking it this year, and the older one will be taking AP Art History in the fall so it's perfect timing to go to Florence, I think).

I think one of the hardest things about planning a trip like this with kids (of any age) is knowing when to sacrifice something you'd like to see for the better interest of the rest of the family. We do try to have us each make a list of what we want to see and do and then see where the overlap is - the things that overlap are the ones we do and then as time permits, we add in the ones that aren't as "popular" knowing that while this might not be something they want to do, they will have something else that they do want to do later.

I was also going to suggest a private booking like Rome in Limo. This way you could get tickets for the museum for David and maybe tickets to climb the tower if it's not too late and get it all in in one day. A private car wouldn't be much more than a DCL excursion, the DCL prices are CRAZY though......

We were able to change an excursion on our Med in 2010. We canceled our full day Villefranche tour to a half day tour maybe 2 days before we got to Villefranche. No problems, our friends were also able to switch as well. It's on a case by case basis though.

Have my hotel in Barcelona for arrival and departure days! We're staying at the Royal Ramblas. Anyone else staying there? I didn't see anyone mention it on the hotels thread.

School's out on the 21st, then we leave on the 25th! Excited doesn't even cover it!

We are at Hotel Petit Palace Boqueria. There's several families from our cruise staying there. Don't know how close it is but it maybe pretty close.

This surprises me. We booked one snorkeling excursion because the one we wanted was full. The first night on-board the Cruise Director announced at the evening show that the one we wanted was nearly empty. I had no trouble moving all five of us to the desired excursion.

Hi everyone, I know we must be crazy but I just booked my husband and I this morning. :crazy2: AHHH! I don't know what we are thinking with only 3 weeks to "get our act together" but it's what we could do. So with no time to plan, please let me know basic info such as Do we fly in the day before or day of? Where do we stay if we fly in the day before? We are just gonna "fly by the seat of our pants" on shore excursions cause with work and stuff coming up I have no time to research. So any advice would be awesome.

Welcome n8tivecaligirl! nothing like a spur of the moment trip, eh?! But 3 weeks is actually plenty of time to get your act together - that's what is nice about a cruise - once you're on the ship, you don't have to worry about too many logistics, just plan the fun - and the cruise line offers excursions you can choose from if you don't want to put something together yourself.

So, where will you be flying from? Our preference is to arrive at least the day before a cruise in case there are delays or lost luggage. For cruises that involve a super-long flight, we like to come in at least two days early to give us time to recover a bit from the jet lag - no one likes to fall asleep in their soup at the first night's dinner :) So really it's what you're comfortable with.

There's a lot of info in the first post of the thread about plans this group has made for meets and such, and there's a list of excursions so you can take a peek to get an idea of what the rest of us have planned for various ports in case that is of interest.

Have you been to the Med before or any of the ports? Do you like active excursions or more just sight-seeing or a combination?

Depending on what else you want to do in Pisa, and how adventurous you are feeling, you can do both. When I (Matt) studied abroad in 2003-2004, I took a train from Florence to Nice that had a layover of approximately 30 minutes in Pisa to change trains. We got off the train in Pisa, ran to the taxi rank, hopped in a cab, rode across town to the Leaning Tower, gave the cabbie an extra 5 euro to wait for us, admired the view, took a couple of really cool pictures, hopped back in the cab and arrived back at the station with plenty of time to catch our next train.

While I realize that this will be exponentially more difficult with a 9 year old DD than it was with 4 college students, a more extended version of the same plot may work. Lindsay and I are considering taking the train from La Spezia to Pisa and spending about an hour in Pisa. This would give us plenty of time to get over to the Tower, admire the fact that it really does lean, take some pictures and get back to the station to catch another train to Florence where we would spend the majority of our day; we will then catch the train back to La Spezia. However, this plan will only work if you don't have a desire to climb the Tower (which Lindsay and I do not).

Good Luck with what ever you plan!

Welcome!!

No one here will think you're crazy. Actually I've done that before with only a week to get everything together. Learned some very valuable lessons on that trip. If you can I definitely recommend arriving at the very least the day before. I arrived the morning of on that last minute trip and the jet lag nearly got me, not to mention I almost missed a shore excursion the next morning b/c I wasn't acclimated to the time change.

If you have any questions about the ports or excursions (or anything in general) don't hesitate to ask. We'll handle the research for you.

My husband and I have been through CRAZY stress the last 6 months and we always said "when this is all over we are disappearing for over 2 weeks". So things will be wrapping up next week (hopefully) so we are taking off. I have never been to the Med only the "northern" (England, Belgium, Amsterdam) part of Europe. My husband has been but in the 80s. This is sort of "getting away from it all" type of trip.
So from what I am hearing is Plan to fly out Monday the 24th, then get used to the time change. (If we leave the 24th that gets us in the 25th). We are flying from Green Bay, WI. As for excursions I think we will just wait until we are on board and figure it out. (it's that type of trip). :) So if any of you have any learning's of doing a trip last minute like this (good or bad) please let me know, it would be appreciated. (we SERIOUSLY don't need any additional stress right now).;)
I knew to turn to Disboards for some direction and support cause you guys ROCK:blush:

n8tivecaligirl, you are in the right place! What a great way to "get away from it all" and cruising can be seriously stress free - and I think coming in so you arrive on the 25th is a great plan because you'll have the day to start relaxing and then a day to see Barcelona. Our mistake in 2007 was arriving just the day before and we didn't have time to hardly see anything plus we were so exhausted - and we left the same day the cruise got back, so I felt like we cheated ourselves out of seeing Barcelona. We are using the hop-on-hop-off Bus Turistic for our sight-seeing in Barcelona. There's a link in the first post if you're interested in seeing a bit more about it - we used them in 2007 for our few hours we were there which is why we are using them again.

DCL's website is pretty user-friendly for seeing what excursions they offer if you are inclined to use ship tours. For this cruise, I would think if you plan to go into Rome or Florence, you might want to consider one (especially since you want it to be stress free) - these two cities are relatively far from port so part of the day will be eaten up with transportation. You could also check with companies that do driver / guide tours - we are using Rome in Limo for a day in Rome and I saw they also do Florence and other areas as well - www.romeinlimo.com is their website if you wanted to take a look.

I would say that Villefranche you can do yourself with public transportation into Nice or over to Monaco or just stay in the Villefranche vicinity and relax for the day - it's a quaint little place and one of the most beautiful port areas, IMHO.

If you don't want to go into Florence or Pisa, from La Spezia you might consider going up to Cinque Terre - it's close and supposed to be easy to do by the local train or ferry - we are going to do it on the June 15th trip - our first big "do it yourself" excursion!

For Civitavecchia, we'll be there on a Sunday so Rome will be crowded as it is the last Sunday of the month so there is free admission to several sites. DH and I are actually doing a DCL to Bracciano Lake for the morning and then going to poke around Civitavecchia for the afternoon (and probably do some laundry). (We'll have been to Rome on the previous sailing.)

For Naples, I think someone was looking for a couple to join in on a private excursion they have booked - maybe they'll chime in - they had room for a couple more people, and I think it was going up the Amalfi Coast (anyone?) which would be a beautiful day. We are going to Pompeii as my teenagers wanted to see it (again) since studying it in their high school Latin class this year.

Venice I think you can "do yourself." The number one thing on nearly every "what to do in Venice" list I've seen is "get lost in Venice" - and with an overnight stop, it's perfect for DIY.

Dubrovnik is also a good port to do yourself. We actually have a local tour guide meeting us for the day, but if we hadn't arranged that, we were going to just enjoy the town on our own.

Valletta, Malta, is also a good area to do yourself or to do with DCL. We actually are doing a car hire for this port on the June 15th so we can go out further into the area and see the highlights so that when we are back on this cruise, we'll do it ourselves.

Hope this helps get some ideas - you definitely have some time.
