June 27, 2013 - Magic in the Med (Venice)

I'm seeing $1350pp from Denver right now on Kayak, so maybe you'll be able to do even better than you'd hoped. I plan to get cancel for any reason insurance on my airfare the second I book it, due to some uncertainty in my situation. I'm going to end up piecemealing the insurance in order to do that, I think.

We are looking at nonstop Atlanta to Barcelona which is what DCL flew us on in 2007 and similarly did in 2010 to London. So we know that the flight will be more than if we do a connecting but I want the peace of mind of a direct flight.

Thx for the insurance info

We may spend a couple of days in NY before we leave so we would be flying from there but back to Atlanta. If not, it's Atlanta to and from for us. Direct flights only, want my luggage to stand a better chance of getting there!

Exactly! And if for some reason our flight is delayed, no worries about missing a connection.

We have been on 4 Med. cruises so far and all I can say is on all 4 some of the people who flew through Heathrow (London) never recieved their luggage. Eventually they caught up with the ship BUT one couple we met had to "borrow" clothes from the ship for formal night (RCL). It was nice to know that the cruise line can have a stash of clothes just for such an occasion.

When are you planning on going?

We are going to fly over June 12th as we are on the June 15th sailing as well. But if we weren't, we would still go so we spend two nights in Barcelona before boarding. We were in Barcelona overnight in 2007 but so jet lagged and inexperienced that we didn't see much... Just rode the HOHO bus for a couple of hours. we are also staying over one extra night at the end of the trip so that we don't have to rush from the ship to the airport and it gives us another part of a day in Barcelona which should be enough.

The other thing about going over early is that if there was a reason that our luggage didn't make it from ATL, then that gives an extra day for the luggage to catch us before we board.

We have ressies for the 25th & 26th and for the night after the cruise.

Hello all
Just popping back in to see how the planning is going.
My DH and I added on our 2 teens when we were on the Fantasy back in June (DS18 abd DD15). But we are still undecided as to whether we can really afford this trip or not:guilty:

We just came back from a week in France where my DH and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. Everything went so smoothly (no getting lost, no major problems) and we were driving around the Normandy area for a few days.
Now I want to roll up my sleeves and get started on this trip...but I am a little afraid to let myself get excited until we figure out if we can find a good airfare:rolleyes:

So really glad you all are posting about the airfare:thumbsup2

Laurie - glad you had a great time in France! And how fun to have added your children to the reservation - you guys HAVE to come!

Hello

Does anyone know if they still do the kids graduation ceremony for the 3 - 10 year olds at the end of the cruise?

Evelyn

We flew Air France and lost our clothes. DCL dressed all of us for free for the formal nights. Awesome! Not to mention, they also provided all toiletries including razors and called the airline each day for updates on our luggage.

I have heard not good things about flying through Paris also. I'm glad it worked out but nobody needs that kind of stress on vacation.:sad2: That is everyone's greatest fear I would bet. We try to fly direct from JFK/Newark to Barcelona and are willing to forgo the savings in order to minimize the odds. But the cruise lines do make a great effort to locate your luggage and reunite it with the owner. Hope I just didn't jinx myself now.....:rotfl2:

That's good to hear...the part about DCL, not the part about the luggage being lost:blush:

We are thinking of doing what we did in 2010 for the Baltic cruise , which is drive from VA to NY, leaving our dog with my DMiL and flying out of NY. We saved alot of money that way and a direct flight was so much easier to recover from. Good to know that a direct flight from JFK is available as there are none in VA or DC.

We have taken a few direct flights out of JFK. They usually leave about 7:30 or so and arrive 7:oo a.m. local time Barcelona. Our problem is we arrive in JFK @ 10:30 a.m. so a full day hanging out in an airport.:sad2: I also know Phillie has direct flights (U S Air I thought) or at least they used to. We have already booked our transfers and hotel through Disney so the last time we were picked up at the airport and were lucky to get into our room early to "freshin' up". Still too early to book airfare for us yet but mid August I am told they will start booking. Hold on to your wallets...or purses which ever applies.

I may be changing to the 7 night and I am a little sad. :guilty:

My friend and her son are unable to get a price even close to ours so they wouldn't be able to go. I am willing to change my dates if it means we can vacation together. Waiting to see. :rolleyes1

I really wanted to visit Venice but I threw my coin in the Trevi fountain in June last summer and I am going back next summer so maybe it will happen again.

:cool1:

I will be lurking on both meets until I know for sure.

It is fun to vacation with friends... sorry they weren't able to get a good enough price for the Med.

One more week until our return flight date is bookable and we can seriously track flight fares. Right now it is holding at $1,406 on Delta from ATL to BCN.

I am planning on using frequent flier miles to get us from boston to barcelona. I have been saving for this forever!!! Today I was able to put a 3 day courtesy hold on flights on Lufthansa on 6/22-7/9/2013.

Just have to double check timing and hotels before I actually book it.

So just wanted to let people know that some airlines have open up dates through when our cruise returns to port. Good luck!!!
