June 27, 2007 10 Night - The Rodney Dangerfield of Med Cruises

We applied January 27 at the post office. You can go online to check the status on the passport site. Here is the link. http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/status/status_2567.html

I had gotten a quote from a company someone recommended on one of these boards and it was well over $100 each way. The airport is only 8 miles from the port, so even an expensive cab would not be more than half of that. I haven't gotten any other quotes yet.
Thanx for the Info:thanks:

I figure you should get your passports in about to weeks, let us now when they show:listen: :cool1:

Here is some useful information posted on the excursion thread.

The 10 night cruise will have formal night on night 2, semi formal night on night 9 and Pirates of the Carribean night pirate: on night 8.

The ship will tender at 2 ports these being Villefranche & La Spezia.

That would make pirate night on July 4th, right? That would be KEWL.

We were booked on this cruise and then cancelled since DD (15) decided to go to Costa Rica with her spanish class. But now she just found out one of her friends is booked on this cruise with her family and she gets back from Costa Rica on June 24, so we are looking at going again.

We are on the Wonder next week, so I will look at booking then using DVC points with the on board booking discount for points and then figure out airfare using FF miles.

So there is a possibility we might be on.

Oh, my DH (Robert) and I (Linda) are on the EB Med crossing on May 12!

I booked the Disney transfers from Hotel AC Barcelona to the port and then from the port to the airport on the way home for $50 pp. Not too bad!

Also, checked with DCL. There ARE brunches and High Tea on at sea days but.... already all booked up! ;( Will try when we board!

Did anyone else get up at 3 and 4 this morning to book?!?!?!:surfweb:

No? :headache:

They did have high tea available at that time of the morning. But it was booked by the time I logged in later.......

Yay! We booked all our excursions too! Also Palo for dinner! Did anyone get a prompt to book Palo for brunch or tea? I didn't see one but it might be that they are already booked up since they only offer them on days at sea. Not sure why it didn't show up!

We ended up booking the AC BArcelona hotel prior to the trip on our own. (About $100 per night cheaper than Disney offered). I am thinking of booking the transfers through Disney though. Piece of mind and all. Anyone staying there too?

I was very surprised that Disney didn;t want money up front for excursions. MOST cruises want payment when booked. I guess it allows it to be magical until you get the bill!

Now, we are COMPLETELY booked. London, Barcelona, hotels and excursions. Yikes, it's finally seeming real!

I was up at 3:00. But, they still have a daylight savings time issue so you couldn't book until 4:00. I slept until 5:15 and was able to book dinner and brunch. High tea was available but I didn't book it.

We called yesterday. They told my sister 12 pm EST so I tired at 12 pm EST -- no Luck. I waited until 12 PM CST -- still no luck. I got 3 hours of sleep and sometime between 12pm CST and 3 pm CST the reservations came on on-line. At that time they had ONE brunch time for each of the at sea days and some of the SPA services were already gone.

I am super tired but at lest we are going to brunch at Palo. :surfweb:

I'll admit it. I was one of the insane people up at 3am to book excursions/Palo/etc. However, instead of going back to sleep for another hour, I opted to wait it out. My friend and I had a few excursions on our wishlist that were described as having "limited capacity" so I wanted to make sure we got them -- "Gnochetti..." pasta making in Sardinia, "Chateau Neuf de Pape & Avignon", and "Nice & Eze w/wine and cheese". For the safety and comfort of yourself and others, please do not get between me and wine & cheese. ;)

Earlier that evening, I was finally able to book the Paris-Barcelona sleeper train via RailEurope. I feel all reservationed out!

If anyone has any suggestions for transport between DLP and Gare d'Austerlitz for 2 people with luggage, please share! I know we can get as far as Gare d'Lyon via RER metro line A. Then there's a bus transfer, but I don't think we can do that w/2 pieces of hand luggage each. Perhaps a cab from that point wouldn't be too expensive? I found a shuttle company online that wants 85euros for the one way!

Hi ,
So what were some of the more popular choices and why?
My wife and I are a bit indecisive on some of them (so many choices at each port!)
We are trying to educate and encourage our 7yr old son that there's so much more to see than just the pool slide! Hopefully we will suceed at most ports.

Would appreciate any feedback.............-pj :thumbsup2

ImprovGal, Me and my family (DH, DD10, DD13) will also be on the Gnochetti excursion!

I got up at 3AM also, but I was concerned more about Florence and Pisa. I'd heard on the general Med board it was selling out, and I really wanted to be on that excursion- the kids and the husband really wanted to see the leaning tower, but I'd read in Passporter that it was a lot of ride for very little touring if you did Pisa alone. And I didn't want VIP Pisa because we don't want to climb up the tower-we are all somewhat afraid of heights. So for us, Florence and Pisa was far superior to the other offerings.

We're also doing the Ultimate Rome adventure, Timeless Pompei and a taste of Sorrento, and the Marionette Museum in Palermo. Now I'm looking for maps for walking tours. We should have 2 hours free in Rome, the morning free in Palermo, and we plan to do Monte Carlo on our own. Can anyone recommend a good guide book with big easy to understand maps?

pj, a lot of your choice of tour depends on your tastes, but there are trip reports of european cruises on the web that may help you. On cruisereviews there's a celebrity ship that does the circuit and has several reviews, there's passporter's online trip report, and so on... So you may be able to get more advice from people who have actually Europe, then from us who are planning to.

Personally, I had a lot of trouble choosing which Rome tour I wanted, but narrowed it Jumping Into.. and the Ultimate... as good overview tours. So it was a question of whether we wanted to get there by train or bus. Then I read that if you use the train not on a tour there could be significant delays getting to the station, and waiting for the train. Of course, when it's a whole tour group, it could be optimized, but I started counting the hours and activities between Jumping and the Ultimate and thought, while it's hard to tell, it seemed as if the two hours free time in the Ultimate were matched by things that would take a lot less than two hours... so I came to the conclusion that the Ultimate was a little more efficient. But I could be wrong. I figure both are good, but at some point you have to choose...

The cooking class in Sardinia was a no brainer for us, we love to cook as a family. We had a lot of question over whether to do a Pompei tour that included Capri. Capri is sort of on route, so you don't lose travel time stopping there. But it makes it a long day, and there will be a lot of long days. I stopped Capri overnight as a teen, and what I really remember was nice leisurely shopping-I still have the coral necklace I bought there, and there was a dress I wore for years until it physically started falling apart from wearing out at the seams- but I doubt shopping will be relaxing on the schedule the tours that stop there have. So we opted for an hour more sleep.

That's how we made our plan.

Why can't we do a bus transfer with luggage, is it not that kind of bus?

We got all of our tours we wanted but... alas.... only got Palo for dinner. We booked both Florence and Rome on our own since we have been to both. We booked wine tasting at Le Casselet at the Marseille port, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in Naples. We are without children on this trip so tried to tailor the excursions that way.

Back to transfers, they were very reasonable ($50 RT) First, hotel to port and then port to airport. When you consider the hassle of transfering from train to bus, etc. .... it seems worth it. Only downside is, I wonder when we will leave for the port. We are hoping to try to get brunch or high tea ressies once on the ship so the earlier the better!

As far as buses, trains, and cabs with luggage. We were a family of four last year with LOTS of luggage and, other than having do the lugging yourself, it was no problem to carry it on but.... many times, cabs charged (I mean ripped you off) with an extra luggage charge.

I cannot believe it is less than 3 months now! Doesn;t it feel like a lifetime ago that we booked it???

Today, I bought shampoo and it came with little sample sizes that are just perfect for the trip. OK, first purchase down!!!!

What other excursions did everyone book? Do tell!!!

Here is a list of the excursions I chose. I will be taking my 2 girls along on every one except the Monaco one. A couple of long days, but they are already excited about seeing Italy!!!

Day 2 - Palo Brunch 10:30 AM
Day 3 - Mysterious Palermo 12:45 PM & Palo Dinner 6:30 PM
Day 4 - Pompeii, Sorrento, & Capri 7:30 AM
Day 5 - La Cinta Beach 1:15 PM
Day 6 - Highlights of Rome & Vatican Museums 7:30 AM
Day 7 - Florence & Pisa 7:45 AM
Day 8 - Marseille City Tour 8:00 AM
Day 9 - Highlights of Monaco including casino 1:30 PM

My father and my aunt (his sister) are also going but they can't book until 75 days in advance. They are planning to go on the same excursions so hopefully they don't book up!

Funfoody,

Try the Rick Steve's books for good guides. In most he literally says, "Stand in front of the Pieta and head left. Look up and you will see..... turn right at the ...." We did his tour last year at both St. Peter's Basillica and the Louvre and they were terrific! I think I own 12 of his books now! He is not that big on maps but his anecdotal notes are fabulous!

Hi ImprovGal - I was lurking in your thread. We are on the June 16th cruise. We are also taking the overnight train from Paris to Barcelona. I found a shuttle service in Paris that we are using and the prices seem reasonable. You might want to check them out. The website is http://www.bee-shuttle.com/. I was quoted 17 euros pp from the hotel to the train station. Good luck with you travel plans.

Carol: thanks for popping in and sharing that shuttle info!

Here's my list o' booked stuff:

1st sea day: 8:30am Personal Trainer session, 3pm Palo Tea
Palermo: Palermo & Ballero Market, 8pm Palo dinner
Naples: Timeless Pompeii & Flavor of Sorrento
Sardinia: Gnochetti Sardi & Ravioli
Citavecchia: Jumping Back Into Eternal Rome
La Spezia: Florence & Michelangelo
Marseille: Chateau Neuf du Pape & Avignon
Villefranche: Nice & Eze w/Wine & Cheese, Evening Casino
2nd sea day: 10:30am Palo Brunch

Sleep? Why would I want to waste time sleeping on vacation??? ;)

Thanks, Mickymad,

You're right-Rick Steve's guidebooks are great! I just got a copy of his Provence and the French Riviera, and I love the material on Monaco. The maps aren't big, but they clearly point out the things I'm looking for, like the train station, the bus stops, and the sites of interest. Thanks for the tip!

Hey, did anyone get their cute DVD from Disney about our cruise? It came yesterday! Very cute and what a way to get even more excited. I watched it twice including the kid portion and we're not even bringing our kids!

I guess it's a way to get excursions booked and tell us the importance of passports in a friendly enticing way. Anyway, It was typical Disney fun! Enjoy!

DVD?!?!?!?! What DVD?!?!?!?!!? Agh! <running to mailbox>...:scared1:
