It's not cheap, but you can rent the phone for around $50, and the calls are around $2.49 a minute. If you limit your useage, you should come out ok. (Still beats the heck out of ship to shore)
Most domestic phones won't work in Europe. I have a Samsung phone/PDA, and the upgrade to it actually will. I'll probably upgrade my phone right before we go to Europe.
I'm sure there are other services available, (I'd welcome seeing them), and some of them are much cheaper, but require a European number. That defeats MY purpose, as I want to make it easy for business and family contacts to call us if needed.
I have a Treo 650 through Cingular with international call roaming


Now if I can just figure out all the international dialing codes!
