We watched one of our new dvd's last night featuring Rick Steeves with some of our various ports of call. It included Berlin, Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki. It was mesmerizing and I actually can't wait till I watch it again! We are going to have some fantastic ports to visit on this cruise!! Not that I didn't already know that, lol.

Carol - which Rick Steeves is it? I'd love to see if the library has them...

Hi all,

:offtopic:

I am in Lego H*LL right now. :scared1: Anybody out there with little boys? Somebody put a bullet in my head.:rotfl: Seriously though, I don't have anywhere to put them. Thanks...just needed to scream!!!

GO SC!!! DH is at the game. score currently38-14 with 8 minutes to go in the 4th

Welcome out of Lurkdom, Vicki! I'm glad you posted! :) Now maybe Keggy's FIL will join us by posting??? ;)

I totally understand your cost concerns for this cruise. It is terribly expensive, and we could all probably do the same itinerary on a different cruise line for a whole lot less. A lot of friends question me as to why in the world would we cruise on Disney ships when it's usually just DH and me. Our kids are grown (24 & 25) so, even if they do come with us, we're still all adults. But, I'm very comfortable with the DCL ships: I know where everything is, I have a routine, I enjoy the shows, I like the cabins, and the food is good. But, the wallet is definitely straining to keep up! :headache:

I did want to offer one little piece of advice if you're thinking about switching cabin categories to... do it now if you're wanting to save money. Unless the recession really does knock the majority of cruisers out, the cruise prices will probably continue to rise. When we went on the Med cruise in '07, we decided to switch from a Cat4 to a Cat 6 to try to save some money but, by the time we called, we were told that we'd already actually paid less for the Cat4 than what the Cat6's were selling for at the time!

Thanks Deb for the welcome and the suggestion. I doubt that we would switch to a cabin without a verandah. I know that sounds spoiled, but it would have been SO MUCH WORSE!!!!, and I would have gone crazy if we had not have had a verandah for the PC cruise when I broke my wrist. I spent some time out there just trying not to think about my aches and stuff, and having the occasional "pity-party" Water is very soothing for me.

 Thanks for last night. I am going to see about "it" on Monday!!! Taking Jack to Disneyland AGAIN on Friday and Stacey will meet up with us on Saturday.

The sticker shock is really starting to get to me too. I am going to do a little work on Stacey to see about some alternatives. Maybe dropping from a cat 5 to an Cat 8...we can use the difference for the Moscow excursion. Sometimes just because you can afford it, doesn't mean you should spend it. We could do our loft expansion (we have a loft that looks out over into our dining room below) for 15 grand and increase the square footage of our home by almost 200ft. maybe the wonder will be based in Europe after the new ships arrive. then those trips won't be so limited and cost less. but as for now we are in. Vicki, if we win lotto, I am so paying for you and Greg to go on this trip. Oh and of course join you in tortola!!

PLEASE buy lotto tickets!!!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!!!!

party:

Happy New Year Everyone!

Welcome Vicki!

I have to agree with DebT on lowering the cabin category. We have always sailed on our cruises in a category 6 with a category 11 across the hall for our DD's. Even on the Med Cruise we were able to do this. This time, however, the points were just way too high - we use our DVC points to cruise.

Anyway, we mulled it over and decided that we would go for two category 11 cabins this time. We were giving up our verandah, but we will be on the cruise and we will see all those fantastic ports of call. Not to mention all the other amenties which remain the same.

So we will see how this one goes. If it means giving up the cruise totally, then definitely check out the lower categories. We have the two category 11's on deck 7 midship and are very happy with the location too.

Thanks CarolAnne,
We are going to keep all of our options open. We definately don't want to cancel, but we have thought about everything we could do with 25K. It's really normal for us to spend a lot of time doing the "pros and cons" any time we spend a large amount for anything. Anyhow, we are not cancelling yet!!!!! Vicki

If you're spoiled, them I am, too! ;) Not only do I "need" a verandah, I must have one with the plexiglass (not a Navigator's verandah). I'm very nervous about having had to book a Cat4 GTY this time because we've always had a mid-ship cabin. I don't think I could cruise without a verandah... but if it came down to a choice between sailing without a verandah or not sailing at all, I think I'd choose sailing. :) It sure beats staying at home! :rotfl: I just hope I never have to make that choice because we love, love, LOVE having a verandah.

As for the price of this cruise, I'm pretty much in denial. Just like for our '07 Med cruise, DH doesn't even want to know how much it's going to cost us. We took both our adult kids on the Med cruise which really added to our expense. We've booked them on this cruise, too, but DS probably isn't going to be able to join us (he graduates from law school and will take the bar that summer) and DD is still undecided. If one or both of them don't come, then we'll feel like we've hit the lottery in the amount we'll "save"! :rotfl2:

I am spoiled too. I asked my DH if we could maybe downgrade to a cat 8 and save 2 grand...he likes his verandah. Me too!!!! heading out to Disneyland in the next 30 minutes or so. Just finishing off roasting rib bones to make beef stock so I can make French Onion Soup. I'll get it all ready to go and simmer the stock on Sunday morning...takes 4-6 hours. then i can make the soup for dinner. (Vicki, I rarely cheat;) ) Well there goes my timer. gotta go deglaze!!!

Scottishwee - welcome back.

Count us in on the "must have verandah" especially for the longer-than-three-night cruises. DH spends a good bit of his ship time on the verandah which means even on port days after we get back from being out, he enjoys it. For us, it also gives us that extra bit of room that we find we need to not trip over each other. DS11 and I don't spend much time in the cabin, but DH and DS12 do... and DS12 likes to watch the t.v. while DH likes to read - this way, DH can read outside while DS12 watches tv inside.

Hey Cindy. Have to agree with you on the must have verandah with the 4 in the room. We certainly would do the same thing. But with paying for two staterooms, well we just cannot swing it this time. But at least with only two in each room we should be ok...I hope, LOL!

Scottishwee, welcome back. Would love to get to Dublin one day. DH has coworkers there and we both have our ancestry in Ireland as well. Maybe one of these days...

Hello Cindy and CarolAnn

We enjoyed ourselves in Dublin with our 11 friends and had good times. Just our Daughter Olivia came with us and she had a great times in the hotel and she loved the swimming pool etc.

Dublin is a lovely place and friendly people (apart from the hotel, some very rude staff). We stayed at Regency Hotel and it was a beautiful hotel.

but one problem that Dublin is a very ex*****ve as the euros was not very good as 1.00 pound for 0.96 euros. We were shocking and we normally get 1.45 euros for a pound. Everything was very expensive....

But we enjoyed the New Year Gala too. Also we went to Gunniess Factory.. will show you photos later...

I went to work today as it was work swap shift... Glad it went over quickly today..

We were talking last week that it won't be too long before the boys are big enough that we'll want to look at two rooms - I was telling Gary about how many families do one with a verandah and one across the hall without... I certainly won't pay for two verandah rooms :) If it were just the two of us, we could do without a verandah if it made the difference between going or not going.

So we're working hard and saving our money for the Baltic trip so we can enjoy what we want :) And I'm trying to win enough $$ via contests / sweepstakes this year to pay for it (wish me luck - LOL).

While we would love a verandah I have yet to pay for one on our five cruises. I just don't spend enough time in the room to justify the extra cost. Now, if they we're going to give me the verandah for the same cost I would not complain.

On another note, We are heading down to Orlando next Sunday for a week of rest and rehabilitation. This will be our first trip without a toddler in 2 years, so we have a lot of nice meals planned. We'll be staying in a studio (savannah view) at AKL. Oddly enough while I am fine without a verandah on the cruise I would never stay at AKL without the Savannah view.

I hope you all have a happy and joyous New Year.

- Scott

Hey everyone, thought I'd check back in since it's been quite a while. The holidays have been so busy. I have a birthday to get through in 5 days (my middle daughter turns 9) and then life should settle back down. Well, actually, we'll probably have her party on MLK day so it will still be a couple of weeks.

We took a tour to Rome over the Christmas. It was very nice. The tour was a bit more scheduled than I prefer. I love to have free time to just 'rome' around the cities we visit. Unfortunately, I didn't get that this time. We visited Pompeii, Pisa, Florence, and Sorrento as well as Rome over 5 days. We also got to go the the Papal blessing at the Vatican on Christmas Day and stood outside for part of Midnight Mass. And except for the bus running out of gas at 1 a.m. in a tunnel in Switzerland on the way home, it was a pretty good trip.

We are still looking forward to the cruise, but I have been having feelings that we won't be able to go. For one thing, this year and half that that we've lived in Germany, we have saved almost no money because of traveling. Paying for this cruise will end up putting us in debt right before my oldest is to start college. Secondly, my husband has a job prospect in the DC area. I am not ready to leave Europe yet, nor is he, but if this job comes through we would have to think about it. I don't think we will be able to fly back for the cruise if he does. But man, what could be better than this cruise? It's truly a once in a lifetime trip.

So I hope everyone had a great Christmas, New Year, or any other holiday that is important to you. If you want to see pictures from our trip, you can visit our website.

Good luck on your winnings!! We are heading to the Empress Casino here today - taking DD's and Jen's BF who is visiting from NH. Here's hoping we win a few bucks ourselves!! :)

The Rome trip sounds fabulous! I would definitely go back again - we were on the Med Cruise in 07. Hope to see you in 2010 on the Baltic, but understand if your DH takes the job offer - good luck!

Scottishwee - sounds like a very nice trip to Dublin!

Happy New Year to you too, and have a fabulous WDW trip! :)

Hi everyone! Were back from the cruise and WDW. The cruise was wonderful the time at WDW was ok. Our stay at AKV was a nightmare and I will never again be in the MK or any other park on NYE that is just complete madness. It looks like i've got to go back and read a few pages and catch up. Talk with ya'll later.

Yikes! Glad the cruise was wonderful for you. Please tell me why AKV was a nightmare - we are booked there for next June. Have stayed at AKL before and loved it, but not the villas yet. Let us know why you had a nightmare visit...
