Thank You Andrew
I think we will stick to the
DCL trip. Since this is our 1st cruise, 1st time out of the US, its probably best to stay with the group.

Usually best to go with 1st instinct.

Yes, its each to their own what you feel best with, at DCL, all you have to do is register for the trip online and turn up, ( ok pay after), they get commission, you are hassle free.
Nearly everything on this cruise DCL do, you can do by yourself from private tours, to trains, to taxi, to walk and a bus. Everything is close.
I remember last year being in Rhodes town, I had come up by taxi from Lindos in about 50 mins. I have done it before.
Whilst walking around town we saw three or more big cruise ships in. At lunch, we sat in the middle of many cruisers from the USA.
They were talking saying, its so sad they had just found out about how beautiful Lindos was, ( where I stayed) and they were upset they couldn't do it in a day.
They were told on ship, you cannot trust the buses, you will sit next to a goat, or sheep, they are all old and dangerous, the taxis are not reliable you will not get back etc.
All wrong, Taxis all plentiful, all top of the range Merc's, bit fast, but go with the flow, buses run to time better than London, no sheep.
I know how they feel the first time I went to USA, I didn't do much on my own, last trip I organized everything.
DCL are better than those cruise lines they do hand out train times etc and maps and leave it to you, many other cruise lines boost profits by forcing people on their trips.
In five of seven Med ports I have arranged my own, we can direct the driver to what we want to do, go down areas, tour buses can, make changes at short notice, have a private guide in the Vatican, and get a free propeller hat, and free night in the slammer if a member of our trip flashes at the pope!
