I'm SO clueless about DL! I had no idea they were having a 60th celebration going on. When does it end? Will the week we're looking at be insane???

I'll be there that week,
I think Friday the 17th will be heavy, with a possibly heavier crowd than normal on Monday, but I don't think it will be worse than the normal summer crowds. We will be in the parks Mon-Fri though. Our plan is to start at DCA Monday in case Disneyland Park is still packed.

I don't know that the actually date of the 60th anniversary (July 17) will have a huge spill over impact on the next week. As mentioned, I think that there is going to be large crowds in general because it's the height of the summer season, when a lot of folks are traveling and visiting the parks anyway. There might be slightly higher than normal crowds over the weekend because of folks coming to the parks for the actual 60th anniversary weekend, but I don't think it'll have a sustained impact into the next week. There is a big(ish) convention over at the Anaheim Convention Center in the later half of the week (VidCon runs from July 23 through 25), but I don't know if it'll actually have much of an impact on the parks.

The 60th Anniversary Celebration is likely to run through sometime in 2016 (no official end date has been announced). There will probably be some special activities on July 17th, but the big kick-off event was on May 22nd (the Friday before Memorial Day, the traditional start to the summer season at DLR).

Are summer crowds there comparable to summer at WDW?

Usually summer crowds at WDW are worse than DL. But this year is different due to the anniversary. I think DL is going to be much busier than WDW. I was at DL a couple of weeks ago and the crowds were more intense than they usually are. I have gone to DL the last five years. I was there last year over the 59th anniversary and it was pretty packed then. I'm sure that July 17th will be pack with vacationers and passholders celebrating the 60th.

All passholders except Premium are blocked out for the 17th, FYI!

Yes, most of the passholders are blocked but they can pay the discounted price to get in and they will for the anniversary!! The Premium Passholders will be there to of course!!!! They also get discounts from the Disneyland resort hotels and they will stay there for the anniversary. I was there for the 59th anniversary last year and they did that. The 17th is going to be like the 24 hour event I'm sure. It's going to be packed!!!! As for the rest of the week who knows? I was there the week Cars Land opened and it really wasn't bad a all. No one was at DL, we had the park to ourselves that week. Everyone was ad DCA.

DLR did away with the blockout tickets, so if an AP holder wants to get in on a blockout date, they have to either upgrade to an eligible AP (in this case, the Premium) or buy a one-day ticket.

After being at the 24 hour and now going to the 60th, I hope you are wrong :$ But, I'm mentally preparing myself for the same crowd levels.

Even if it is as crowded as the 24 hour, I hope Disney has figured out a way to let people in the parks without causing a safety concern and leaving the esplanade to overflow and spill out through bag check.

Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

Really? I was told that the non Premium Passholders received a discount on the one day ticket price if they went when they were blocked. Wow! I guess there will be very few non Premium passholders there on the 17th then.

DLR used to sell a discounted one-day ticket to AP holders on days when their AP was blocked. It was called a blockout ticket, but they stopped selling these in March of 2014, when they also suspended sales of new SoCal APs.
