The scenes of devastation from Joplin are absolutely heart-wrenching. Living in the heart of tornado alley, it is so easy to become complacent. It's not that we feel invincible, it's just that storms happen so frequently in the Spring, and the local meteorologists have the tendency to get excited and interrupt programming all evening for even minor severe storms, that's it's easy to adopt a bit of a "Boy Who Cried Wolf" attitude. That, combined with the amazing technology the weather people have, which can track a storm almost down to the exact intersection a storm will cross, most people don't get too worried. Then something like this happens, and we see the awesome power of nature, and it wakes us up with renewed respect for the weather. The next two days are supposed to be stormy in this part of the country, and I think most people around here will be a bit more prepared then they would have been before Sunday night.
Prayers for the people of Joplin, and to all those who have been affected by last night's storms. Prayers also to all the people in this part of the country, that no one else will be similarly affected in the days to come.
