Jon and Kate Plus 8, Official Thread--Part 7

Maria is saying the same thing on all the interviews -- that she never thought to disinvite Kate and that Kate is doing the best she can right now, under the circumstances.

Inside Edition reported on the convention, too ... very few people came to hear Kate speak, and hardly anyone wanted an autograph, so she left early.

That is probably a good thing! I think Jon and Kate both need a reality check on their ego.

Thanks Madge. I have to distance myself. It is sometimes a source of frustration for me. If it isn't fun, why blog? :)
Also, this family has become a bit stale to me. Bad parents don't = entertainment imo.

That must have stung a bit..

yes. the only weeks when the ratings are up is when there's a special interview or announcement.

maybe the kids aren't the draw, after all?

Great! They can do this every week (I think they are LOL). Just put Kate on by herself to talk to the cameras. Everybody's happy. I wish her the best on the Kate Show/All About Kate/All Kate All The Time/Kate+Kate. :)

OMG....I just a commercial for the Insider and HAILEY is going to be on Thursday night! :faint: She is going to be on with Star Jones and Kathy Griffin. The promo showed her saying "I'm headed to L.A. for the Insider and nothing is off limits."

She mentioned that in the Q&A last night.

I don't know how licensing works for nursing--but it sounded like she had to do it now or she essentially lost her license forever.

I don't know anything about it either but I would have thought that she would have had to of done the Continuing Ed hours prior to the licensing expiring. It seems a bit odd that even though she hasn't worked as a nurse for many years that she'll have 2 more years to get those hours in. :confused3

OMG what is that nitwit thinking. Maybe she is thinking... Kate sat with Kathy Griffin & that went well, I'll be fine. I was in the skit too.

He also said the Jon has repeatedly offered Kate an olive branch and she sets it on fire and walks away. Which is an interesting visual. :rotfl:

The only branch I have seen was poison ivy....what have I missed.

OMG -- it took me forever to catch up on what you all posted today, and it wasn't even an "important" day

:lmao:

I actually multi-quoted as I was reading but most of those are done with now, so I'm mostly going to summarize.

I think it's wonderful that this topic is getting exposure. Any time is a good time to talk about protecting kids! This issue has been swept under the rug long enough.

ITA :thumbsup2

Well, it does seem different in different states. I've just done a quick search and the legal language = :headache:

It is also not clear to me whether Jon's injunction preventing the children from being filmed is temporary and/or merely for the location (i.e. the house). I'm sure it is challengable by Kate. I think it will be dealt with as part of the custody agreement. I rather pity the Judge in this case.

For what it is worth: California's Coogan Law has been used as a model for other states i.e. New Mexico and NY but is not applicable in all states. The Coogan Law is fairly minimal -- money earned by a child working as an actor belongs to the child, and a giant 15% of the child's gross earnings must be placed in trust. If I am reading correctly it has been modified several times to close loop-holes, most recently in 2004. Child Labor Law in CA takes care of other aspects, like education and hours worked. It covers 100% of minor actors. The Screen Actors Guild web page has a link to the full text.

New York's Coogan Law is very similar, but also includes some language re. education. I think the NM version was filed after the Child Nation controversy, but have not looked for it yet. As I said: :headache:

PA has no Coogan Law, but there are good provisions to protect child labor extant regarding hours and educational opportunities. Remember that PA is still investigating whether TLC and the Gosselins have violated Child Labor Law or have merely exploited loopholes. Here is the link, and the relevant section is 7.1 if you scroll down the page --

I think I need a nap after reading all that legalese!

Great job :thumbsup2

I think the most relevant section re the Gosselins is that permits cannot be issued for longer than 6 months ie. sure kids on a movie set would work longer hours (but the state reserves the right to limit hours etc) but this is not supposed to be a year-round or multi-year deal.

It's also important to note that there is no protection for kids under the age of 7, but some of the protections which do exist for children acting in movies would now apply to Mady and Cara and might have kicked in when they chose to increase the number of episodes to 40 per season.

Exactly.

Motives matter whether were talking about Jon or Kate. Why someone does something gives you an indication of what kind of person they are. If Jon had stopped filming back in July, I would have totally applauded his efforts. If he had said: we are going through this divorce privately as a family, there will be no filming until further notice if ever. I would have respected his decision and seen it as a genuine act of concern for his children.

IMO, I don't know either one of them well enough to know what their motives are -- honestly, they may not know what really motivates them.

Having said that, it has been inferred by others that until TLC issued it's letter to Jon and Kate, both parents had to find that the filming was detrimental to the children in order to filming to stop. If that is the case (and we would only know this by seeing the contract) then Jon had no way of opting out once he had signed the contract back in 2008 (hence the banter re ending the show at the end of season 4, which has already been alluded to) However, shortly after the divorce announcement TLC issued its letter stating that if either Jon OR Kate felt filming was detrimental, they would stop. Jon did attempt to stop the filming following that, through Charles Meyer, and subsequently through Mark Heller (the latter bit was talked about in the LKL interview)

And a note about the contract they signed in 2008 -- obviously they gave up the right to opt out of the contract for subsequent seasons in exchange for something else (likely more pay per episode) but the option to renew belonged to TLC alone -- it was no guarantee that there would be subsequent seasons, but it was TLC's way of insuring that Jon and Kate did not renegotiate the contract every single season.

Personally, I would love to see Hailey hold her own against Star Jones and Kathy Griffin!! I'll watch!!

Next, I'd like to see those two and Jon.

not me. I am NOT even close to a fan of Star Jones. I couldn't stand to watch her. :upsidedow

I can't stand Star Jones either, but it will be fun to watch her with Hailey. It will be like watching two cats batting around a mouse.

What happened to Hailey not wanting any of this attention? Not liking the fame?

Hopefully, Star and Kathy will annihilate her.
