Yep, it is a slow K & J day LOL.

The dad on teh Duggars is a preacher, and they have a congregation and as far as I have read they meet once a week. They also rent out the house with the large area for groups and meetings and also cater it as a way to have income. I have read the older two girls do the catering, but I don't know if that is fact. Our 501 (c) with the cat rescue group has nothing to do with property taxes (more to do with sales taxes, and being able to be in places for adoptions that only allow 501 (c)'s and it allows us to apply for grants. I know our church is non profit and that does allow us to not pay property taxes.

I think something I wrote might have been misunderstood at some point?

My point was just that it is not easy to just claim your home as a church and then be "tax exempt", there is a lengthy process that is involved and it has to be done right.

Property taxes and being exempt from state/federal taxes (sales tax, income tax, etc) are all separate matters....matters which I'm sure most people find boring :)

Yup, saw the photographer.
Despite everything Jon has said about the MEDIA...he, himself is OBSESSED with it. Oh my. :sad2:

Absolutely, Jon can't pass up the paps without saying something or finding a photo op. It is situations like these that totally ruin Jon's credibility for me. Jon had his own motives for taking the kids off TLC.

I also am in Mom has the final word club. And yes my kids cut the grass, rake leaves, vacuum, even my 23 dd who is getting married in Jan has chores of cleaning the 3 bathrooms. And when I hear "Mom, you're mean." I just tell them, "That's what the first M in Mom stands for." And last year when my dh had someone from work come home for dinner with only 20 minutes notice, as I dashed to the grocery store for dinner, my ds 14 vacuumed the entire downstairs, dusted and picked up without me asking. Boy was I proud and surprised.

Here is a video from Radaronline. If you watch the whole thing you will see that there is a photographer on the property taking pictures of the kids with the pumpkins. http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2009/10/great-pumpkins-jon-gosselin-kids-enjoy-family-fun

That's just sick since the pictures ended up all over today. It's one thing if it's a friend and Jon wanted pictures of the kids carving pumpkins. It's another to sell them for your own gain..... Also, still no helmets and the girl's hair is hanging in their face (just a pet peeve of mine!). Come on people! Safety!!

Hopefully Kate's allowed to show this to the judge tomorrow to show Jon doesn't want the kids off tv - he just wanted to stick it to Kate and TLC. Can you use something like this in court? I have no idea but it seems like it's pretty good proof that he doesn't care if his kids are in the public eye or not...

I understood it to mean property taxes. It can take (in NYS) as little as 3 months, if it's done correctly. If you have to redo items it can take as long as it can take. But it goes back to the original date you filed (again, in NYS) for property tax exemption once it's completed. It's not that hard around here...mostly you have to be holding services and have a sign. Pastor income taxes are filled out differently, but that wouldn't change the income taxes on his profitable income.
I found one place where they are listed in their community as paying $11,000 in property taxes. No idea how old that info was.

I assume some of K & J's taxes are being paid by TLC (and maybe the Duggards too, who I think are very smart), since they tape on their property. If J & K didn't work that into their contract, they weren't very smart.

I'm not trying to be mean, but how can any of you defend Jon? He obviously says one thing and does another. He said that he wanted his children off TV but is obviously willing to sell them to the highest tabloid bidder. I think this is far worse. At least with TLC, they had a sense of normalcy in that they were comfortable with the crew. Does anyone honestly think that he is doing this out of the kindness of his heart and not for money? Let's take a poll. Vote YES if you think he is doing it for the money and vote NO is you think that he is not.

I vote YES.

Does anyone think he is making money doing this? Did I read Lohan was there with him this weekend. Do you think they are filming the new show:laughing:

The house is set up for itpirate:

Yes, I think Jon must be making money for this type of stuff.

Michael Lohan, sheesh. I think Kate was right in that Jon listens to whomever is next to him at the moment. I wish he would surround himself with people who might be a better influence over him. People that might actually care about what happens to him and his family, such as a pastor or family member. Granted I don't know that he doesn't seek advice from the above but he seems to spend most of his time with Michael Lohan, his 22 yr. old girlfriend or Mark $ Heller. None of which have Jon's best interest at heart, IMO.

YES he is doing it for the money. He only stopped the TLC show when they gave him the boot.

And with all this money that he is getting from the tabloids (it was rumored he got 100k from ET/Insider) how much of that is going to the kids and the household they live in vs. Jon & Hailey.

Okay, that's where I was confused. When people are talking about "taxes" I automatically think federal income taxes.

I still am confused by getting the entire house designated as a church when really wouldn't it just be a small portion of it that is used for those purposes? I can't believe they get all of their property taxes waived?

And since this is a thread about the Gosselins, I vote YES! I can't stand John, he comes off as a selfish idiot to me!

Churches can have as much land as they want. They also house the pastor & his family.

We pay no property taxes on our church building (except for water) or our parsonage.

I vote yes on Jon. I hope that was a TLC photog and not a rag mag.

Is tax-exempt and non profit the same?

Here is some info I ran into about their house while looking to see if they are property tax exempt because they use it as a church (haven't found actual facts about that yet). I wonder why J & K never thought of doing that?

I found this on another site:

The Duggars pay no property tax in Arkansas. Their county (Washington County) does not allow you to simply look up taxes and property values online as many other counties do. However, there is a way to access this information:

Go to the Washington County AR tax collector site at:

https://www.ark.org/washingtoncounty/index.php?STARTOVER=1

Click the NEXT button to proceed

Ignore the top box and put in the name Duggar in the box marked "Find My Taxpayer Number"

Check all the boxes for property belonging to James R and Michelle A, and one marked Jim Bob and Michelle A. There four total, all at the same address of 600 Arbor Acres Ave. in Springdale.

Click the CONTINUE box at the bottom of the page.

Now parcel numbers appear in a box on the next page. Click the NEXT box.

The next page is the Duggar's property tax bill. The amount payable is zero, and there is a statement "there are no payable parcels listed." The Duggars pay no tax on this property. Even if they had owed a tax and paid already for the year, this would be shown in statement form.

You have to be non-profit to be tax-exempt under the IRS code. But there is a lot more that goes with it, I don't know if they are a public charity or not - nothing comes up under the name "Duggar" on guidestar but I doubt they would name their church anything with their last name in it!

you have to be non-profit to be tax exempt, but that does not automatically mean you have 501(c)(3) status. This I know from PTO at school. :lmao:

it is my understanding (and I don't know their tax status) that the Duggar property has been declared a church, and as such, exempt from property taxes. it's been that way for years... since before the TV show.

now, I only know about my own tax situation ... but in large families such as the Gosselins (keeping it on topic) and Duggars ... how many children can you claim for tax credit? All of them? I'm just curious about that.

We pay no property taxes on our church building (except for water) or our parsonage.

I vote yes on Jon. I hope that was a TLC photog and not a rag mag.

Jon put up a sign, that TLC is not permitted on his property. Unless something changed, I don't think he would allow TLC on his property.
