Jon Gosselin had been gearing up for an all-out battle – and instead found a rare break in the animosity with Kate.

The patriarch of eight saw his twins Mady and Cara for their 9th birthdays at their Pennsylvania home on Thursday without having to cut short the visit as he had originally feared.

"I'm staying until the kids go to bed," he said during a break in the visit. "We're trying to be cordial for Mady and Cara."

Jon, 32, arrived at the celebration with a vanilla cake from New York's upscale Cupcake Café that had his daughter's name misspelled "Maddy" with an extra "d."

The store's Ann Warren says the cake was ordered over the telephone by an entertainment show – she couldn't remember the name, only that it was "Entertainment something" – for Jon to pick up, and that the woman caller spelled out the name.

The woman asked if it would be all right for people to film inside the bakery, and Warren said that would not be a problem. There were paparazzi and camera crews waiting when Jon got there. He looked at different cupcakes, but then Warren brought down the cake she had decorated. Jon seemed genuinely surprised, according to Warren.

The birthday visit marked a brief respite in the war between the reality TV couple now in the midst of a bitter divorce. On Wednesday, Jon had accused Kate of trying to change plans they had worked out to spend the birthday together by insisting that he only spend two hours in the late afternoon and early evening with the kids.

Just watched the video of Jon picking up the girls...before I even saw the girls I thought Jon looked like such a bum in that flannel shirt and his hat on backwards...I don't know why...I just thought it was the girls birthday, look at least cleaned up...

THEN as soon as Mady sees Jon she says "I don't like your outfit"...

I just cannot believe all this, I really can't...after Jon comes screaming on to all the networks pulling the plug on the show and then putting the sign on the fence and all...and then today of all days allowing all the PAPS right back in.....

Jon needs to sit in one big quiet room by himself and watch tapes of him on every single tv media show from LKL to NG to ET and on and on...and then maybe he will realize what an idiot he really looks like to so many of us with all the contradicting that he has done these last few months.

That was funny when she said she didn't like his outfit. And didn't it seem when he picked us the kids and they got in the car, it was almost like he let the camera man film the inside of the car with the girls.

Thanks to Twitter, I've semi-caught up with the goings on of Jon and Kate for the past week. Caught up in the sense that I saw the headlines from RadarOnline. I didn't do any actual reading on what's been going on.

I'm done with them both. Attention seeking, selfish jerks they BOTH are. If either of them cared about the children, they'd get out of the spotlight instead of using it as a platform. I came in from the parks on Tuesday night, turned on the TV, and the Gosselins were the topic of discussion on Headline News. That's what this has come to? This country has significant issues and Jon & Kate Gosselin are the headlines? Seriously?

Truly, they sicken me, and I pray for their children. What a mess.

I may or may not be back to the thread .. I've come to enjoy posting with you all and would miss that .. but dishing the Gosselins? Nope. Can't deal with them anymore.

I'm with Madge. What a tragedy. I still wonder about the "Kate is a saint and Jon is a sinner" media take though.

To my mind, Kate is nasty and abusive, Jon is a victim but hardly rates much sympathy, and TLC is exploitative and disgusting.

Just my opinion.

So, I'm work at missed most of what Jon mumbled on Entertainment Tonight about Kate not being at the party tonight, but now the People article says she was there. Can anyone give me a breakdown of what happened?

And what happened to fast talking Jon? I could barely understand him on ET, but I had the sound down pretty low.

mine, as well... although I'm not sure I'd go as far to classify Jon as a victim. He's something, all right. They both are. And TLC? ugh.

Redrose, I actually just came across a short interview Jon gave the paps about this. As you say, he really has nothing bad to say about Kate doing the Jay Leno thing and he says it was 2 weeks ago and the time line is messed up. I thought he said the timing was messed up of her doing the skit but he is talking about this whole saga. He does seem to be happy for her and even compliments her:

That was nice. I'd like to see more of that from both of them -- probably the first time Kate will be happy that Jon talked to the paps.

He said "maybe they did it on purpose. I don't know" IMO, they did put it on last night on purpose.

I have Tmz livestream up as I'm doing dishes...

Now as I see how the house is set up and how the paps can stand at the fence at the road and easily get the shot of the garage doors (where there are sooo very many photo ops in trashy cheap white plastic lawn chairs....I am wondering.... why Oh why hasn't Kate had some hedges planted there yet? Just one row of fast growing evergreen hedges....it would immediately reduce the amount of times we see them in the tabloids...we wouldn't see babysitters grabbing them by the arm and yelling at them and Kate spanking etc....it would be such a quick fix...that is the only angle the paps have of the house and that is where they always play, so please! plants some hedges already!

Jon and Kate have been feuding over previously arranged custody agreements regarding the twins birthday.

Good for them But I read elsewhere that they were getting along a lot better than that. Sorry, I'll have to search for the link. But at one point, Jon said "I have to leave at 6 because it's mommy's time" and Kate said "No Jon, you can stay as long as you like" so Jon decided to stay and put the kids to bed.

Really -- is it just me or are the tabloid people sooooo much happier when they're fighting?

JMHO, but I'd be really concerned if my daughter said that to her father after she hadn't seen him for a week. That's just not normal for a girl that age.

Wasn't it great that Jon was able to take time away from his girls birthday party to walk down to the street and chat with his friends, the paparazzi? The girls he couldn't wait to spend time with? So incredibly thoughtful. I think it was also so thoughtful of him to have Entertainment Tonight buy his daughters birthday cake - complete with misspelled name. Kate is giving up such a gem. Any girl would be lucky to have him. (dripping with sarcasm)

In all sincerity, he needs to be drug tested.

Thanks for the link. Seems like those girls know EVERYTHING that happened in the past week. That's sad.

And Jon has to tell the paparazzi to stay away from his kids -- they both do -- but IMO Jon needs to take even more of a stand on this, given that he says he wants his kids off TV. Doesn't he realize his kids might respect him more for standing up for them? Then again, they don't seem to like him much at all anymore, so maybe not.

That video is just sad! I know when I'm gone from home for just a night (or my DH) my girls run to hug me and tell me how much they missed me, etc. Sure didn't see that here. Now, I can see one of my DD's telling me they didn't like what I had on, but it would be after awhile.

Is he being paid for all this filming now? I wonder what TLC's legal team will say about that? I know they dumped Jon's name from the title but don't they still have a contract? I thoughtthey might since they said he would be on occasionally

I felt bad for the kids having to get off the bus with all the paps around. Dad wasn' even close to them...and he took his sweet old time getting their stuff into his car.

Mady's comment? She was probably embarrassed that he looked like that in front of the other kids on the bus....especially if they were teasing them about all the paps there. I also think stuff like this is what will put them in therapy more than the show itself. At least the show is familiar, with the same faces and it is controlled....this is just crazy and ccould get scary fast.

I agree. As a direct result of these parents' decisions, their kids are now paparazzi fodder.

And every time they call The View crying, or sit on an Insider panel, or show up on Larry King or the Today Show or Entertainment Tonight giving us a play-by-play of their personal lives -- THEY ARE MAKING IT WORSE FOR THEIR KIDS.

ITA! I really thought they'd be hanging out at the house looking for Jon, with the whole "live streaming video" thing happening. So I guess they all would have taken those pictures if the nanny had shown up to get the girls instead.
