Jon and Kate Plus 8 Official Thread - Part 5

Since we homeschool and I don't feel like dealing with the district, I am SO thankful for the late WA age for compulsory schooling. Won't have to send in a letter to them for 3 more years. If I were sending DS to school, I might wait to deal with the nonsense until 8, too, teaching him at home and putting him into the grade that he fits at that time. I wouldn't be just starting him off at 8 in K (and it's WEIRD to me that there seem to be people doing that???).

I have lived in WA for almost 30 years and I have a 4th grader & a 2nd grader. I have never seen this. I have seen them hold them back a year (especially boys) if they have late birthdays. I'm pretty sure (at least in my district), if you are 8 they will put you in 1st or 2nd grade and then catch you up if needed.

If you remember, the twins missed their last 2 wks of school this year due to the trip to Bald Head Island. Personally I don't know how any of these kids can go to a normal school with all the negative publicity about their parents. Maybe they are going to a private school to protect their privacy.

I would guess if they are going to something like Junior Kindergarten that is private. I thought she said the twins attended a private school but they were lucky b/c it provided transportation in their area.

It is now, actually since sometime in the late 1970s, maybe early 1980s. In the 1970s in KY schools had limited Kgarten. If kids didn't meet a certain basic skills test they could be enrolled in free, public Kgarten. Since at least the early 1980s, each district must provide some form of Kgarten but district in KY get to define what that will look like--could be 5 half days, 3 full days, all day...bascially it works into whatever the district can afford. Lots of KY districts looked at cutting full day kindergarten as one of the possible solutions to this years budget crunch.

Lots of private schools around the L-ville area are advertising a pre-school and a junior kindergarten as a seperate things. This year and last year were the first I've noticed that.

Is Kate going to be on Good Morning America or the Today show tomorrow?? DH said he caught the last bit of a promo but forgot to listen for channel.

I just googled -- 1985-86 was the first year for mandatory K in Kentucky. I knew it wasn't in the early to mid 70's. I went to kindergarten in 1973, but I was an exception rather than the rule .. my DH did not attend kindergarten, since it wasn't required. My brother was in kindergarten in 1977, but it was still an option. Are there really districts that do 3 days a week for K? wow. I knew that there were still half-day programs around, or I should say I knew that was an option. We've been full day here since 1994 or 1995. And while I've heard about the cutbacks in kindergarten due to the budget problems, that wasn't considered strongly that I'm aware of. But we've also benefited from the base realignment at Ft. Knox. we're actually in the midst of several school construction/expansion projects.

Hi Ladies (and gentlemen).

I'm just waving hallo for my first post here. I've been lurking for a bit, and just want to say that I like your respectful style on the Gosselin debacle. I'm going to come here, read, learn and post more sometimes in the future.

I have followed the Gosselins for about a year, on and off and I have seen re-runs. I have questioned many things I saw on the show, and needed to research a bit more to get an informed opinion. Wow, I got an education on *hate* and *fan* blogs when I googled Gosselin! Oh my!

At least here I can read differing opinions without screening out profanities. The latest developments have me cringing too. I worry about the kids. I think that both Kate and Jon need to rethink their priorities.

i imagine if penn. has mandatory attendance rules like some states their private school would be exempt from it (so not as much of an issue if they wanted to pull the kids out for travel).

if their private school is like the one i taught "jr. k" in many years ago it was geared for one of two types of kids- (1) those who were ready for k but did'nt meet the age requirement or (2) those who met the age requirement but were socialy immature.

maybe it's just in the area we live in that it seems to be common, but i finaly asked when i realized that ds who tends to always be the oldest in whatever grade he happens to be in (february bday and held back one year) ended up being the youngest by as much as 2 years. dd just graduated from 8th and is 15, which the "norm" has always made her a year older than her classmates had a couple who were already 16 and in the class behind her there was a kid who will be 17 when he graduates 8TH GRADE next year

i remember back in the late 70's when i went to highschool in california it was a huge scandle in my graduating class because one of the girls had gotten married mid way through our senior year (but she was 18 so it was legal) so i was shocked when we were looking at different public and private school options up here for dd and came accross more than one school that had written policies they sent out with their materials on how they address their "married student population"

I am so done with these people. Seriously. It is so not about their kids .. it's all about Jon and Kate, and their friends and hangers on .. and it's only going to get worse, IMO. As long as pictures like these are circulating, relatives and friends are giving interviews .. as long as the ratings are still good, the train has a long way to go before it finally wrecks and stops.

I knew it had to be sometime after 1976...that is when I would have been in but didn't go. Lots of my friends parents sent kids to private so they wouldn't be behind. I'm surprised it is as late as 1985. I would guess Lexington had already picked up half days at that point for everyone so I don't remember it. I'm pretty sure I was in college when districts started to go full day. I remember thinking that was probably a good idea. I have a couple of friends that teach in eastern KY both their districts and Jessamine cty (Nicholasville) had got pretty far in the planning stage of cutting back Kindergarten as much as they could legally get away with before teachers and parents put up a fight. Instead most district just did what Shelby county did and cut teacher pay. Teachers had four work days cut, like the one I'm now working today for free. Our classroom set up day was cut.

My summary:
I'm a better parent than Jon, I do everything for my kids, and I don't remember when Jon moved out of the house.

Is this the beginning of a custody battle? Everything from the way that she was dressed to her demeanor (starting before the interview) was like saying "I'm the one who's been wronged here"

Didn't watch - was she speaking like that again? I really wish her PR people would hire somebody to train her on how to speak better during interviews. She's so painful to watch sometimes.

If she went into the interview and acted irate and slammed on Jon, would everyone be happier. She cant catch a break. If she acts one way she is wrong and if she acts the other way she is still wrong. I thinks she handled as well as she could. Remember every marriage takes two and they both are at fault. At least she is not going around showing off.
