I don't think money was tight. I think they just way over-spent.
The Duggars have 18 kids and are debt free and live very well and I don't think they even make what J&K do.
I don't see Kate ever guarding against fame or money....she seemed to thrive on wanting both.

I was referring to the pre-show times. Money had to have been an issue with 8 kids and neither one of the working. The Duggars situation is a bit different. They set out with thoughts of having a large family. They knew they would have to give up certain things to have that like the latest fashions. Kate has freely admitted that when the girls were little they always had matching hairbows, shoes, etc... J & K had a pretty average middle class life style before the sextuplets. I think an unexpected large family would be much stressful financially and emotionally.
I agree that Kate is thriving on the money (who wouldn't) and the fame. That is my point. When one spouse thrives on it and the other (supposedly) doesn't like it than the stress of instant fame sets. I read on article a while back in my husbands Sports Illustrated about how Americans do not respond well to instant fame and wealth. They were mostly a referencing athletes but I think many TV/movie stars fit into that cateogory.
I know I'm in the minority but I think there has always been a way that J and K could have filmed the show, made their marriage work and kept that show from harming the kids and that was to keep it to 1 or 2 hour specials a few times a year. Even once a season wouldn't have been too much. I think this family is different/unusual and some filming, magazine articles, etc. could have been explained to the kids. Then they would have the best of both worlds--the supplemental income they needed with 8 kids and a normal existence that they claim they want for the kids.
