I thought from the video it appeared as if she was trying to grab at the water to give her some..when the filming was about to start. Granted..she took some for herself. Only who knows..maybe the child whines like this alot and she didn't take her seriously. I doubt she was "dying" from thirst.
Granted Kate didn't come out looking like a saint..but we've all had moments that we wouldn't want on tape for the world to see. I wouldn't judge her too harshly from just that. All this being said...if this is what you have to go through ...putting your kids on display like members of a freak show...GIVE IT UP. The novelty of raising eight children has worn off. They are not infants. Any interest regarding the logistics or the day to day care of a family with mulitiples have been answered..and then some. Stop parading your kids before cameras like members of a carnival side show and let them have a normal life..if that's at all possible at this point.

Do you know what she has been dealing with? Maybe John not being at home like he promised? Maybe Jon out in the evenings? Maybe Jon flirting? I don't remember her saying just what she was dealing with, but I assume some sort of marital *******. I certainly didn't get the feeling like you did, that she was perfectly happy to pretend for the sake of the show. If Jon hadn't been caught (if he was, but I know what you mean), perhaps, just like people in the other real life, she could continue to pretend all would be well.
I'm sorry, we'll have to agree to disagree. I don't happen to think that in January, they had a responsiblitlity to share with us that things were not going well. And she didn't need to..many picked of us up on it.

They are in a show about their family, and while they may make decisions differently than you and I, it's a show. I don't know that it's an image, but I do know it's a show and TLC lets us in on part of it. If it's an image, most here certainly haven't thought for a long time that it's an image of a perfect and happy family. Go back and read old threads.

It is either a reality show or it isn't. If you wouldn't (you anyone, not you you) share all your secrets, then if this is a reality show, they shouldn't have to share theirs. Maybe they thought they could work on it and all would work out. But again, I don't have a clue, because we have never gotten to see it all. We don't know if she hugs her kids a lot on the off times, or if she yells at them. We don't know if she shares in the cleaning and cooking, or if someone else is doing it all. We don't know if she does laundry. Nope, TLC lets us just see what they want us to see. J & K and Mady may be much nicer than we think, or even worse. We just aren't really a part of this family..it's only reality for what TLC wants us to see.


And yes, I feel sorry for them. I don't think this was what they set out to do. It's so easy for us to say, just end it, but we really don't know what that would entail.

Your post is interesting. I'm fully aware that editing takes place and that TLC is the one doing it. However, Kate did say on camera during the big season premiere that she's been dealing with this for 6 months, maybe more if she was being honest with herself. That answer was in the context of her and Jon having issues. She further said it's just so complicated. How else is that to be interpreted? So for the last 6 months they'd been having problems which includes the time at the end of season 4 before they signed on for another season. Look at the difference between the season 5 premiere episode and the Charm City Cakes one. And the Emeril one. If the story with Jon and his little pop tart hadn't broke, we the viewers wouldn't even know that things were that bad between them (even though we'd noticed the tension). If we're to believe what Kevin & Jodi say then Jon and Kate's problems have been serious and they've been pretending. Sure you can say that you noticed the tension between them during season 4, I noticed it too but that's a far cry from Jon having an affair or living apart from Kate. I certainly consider their show an 'image' they are trying to continue portraying. It isn't just a show like Friends or Seinfeld. I don't need to go back and read the old threads, I've watched J&K+8 from the beginning and have seen the change in both of them. I still think they would've gone on and continued to appear as if they were together had Jon not been so foolish and gotten caught. If it were your marriage, would you continue to do this show? I honestly wouldn't. My family deserves the effort and so do J&K's. I would have respected both J&K if they'd just said at the end of season 4 that they need to take a long break and work on some issues. Instead they plowed forward to begin season 5.

So yes, we'll have to agree to disagree. That should be the motto of this thread!

Once again...I don't see the big deal...they didn't have time to get them all a drink before they started filming. I think there are things to get upset about and this isn't one of them to me...

Well what would have been wrong with the kids all having a drink while Kate was being interviewed? They asked Cara and Mady a question but the other kids were just set dressing. Hey maybe if they had had drinks than Alexis wouldn't have gotten herself yelled at. Just a thought.

I admit to watching my share of morning TV and they always accommodate the kids. If there wandering aroudn the interviewers let the kids be kids so I don't think it would be a big deal if a bodiless arm was handing out drinks to the kdis

I think Kate should have told the people filming, "can we have just a few seconds while all the kids have a sip of water"...explain to the kiddos that they need to be very quick and very quiet and they can have a sip of water from the bottle and then sit right back down. That way everyone from Kate to all 8 kiddos would be in a great mood for the interview. AND as far as spills, it is water...big deal if someone were to spill....its not like it was grape juice.

With my theory, there would be no video clip circulating around about Kate and her mean-ness.

They probably didn't have a few seconds to spare as I think it was a live morning interview.

Exactly. The children didn't ask for rainbow snowcones, they just wanted a drink. I can't imagine many moms requesting some water, taking a swig, screwing the top on, and then placing the bottle behind the furniture...all the while ignoring a child's request.

Madge, I read that, and looked all over the page. I was hoping it was from The Onion. No such luck.
Jon and Kate need counseling, but they need someone who's actually qualified to help them-a LCSW or a psychologist.

That is such a horrible thing to ask a child. I have a friend who's DD loves me the most out of all her friends. I didn't ask for it, I don't bribe her with money/candy/etc, she just adores me and I adore her. Well.....Grown people have asked this CHILD "who do you like better, Me or Michelle?" I wasn't around when this was asked and the child said, "I like you both the same". Later on when talking to me, the child told me what was asked of them and said, "so and so asked me who I liked better, she said it like she was kidding, but I don't think she was, so I told her I liked you both the same, but I really like you better but I didn't want to hurt her feelings". Seriously why would you ask a kid that question??

It's a stupid question to ask...


Oh..and OT-I just had a Facebook chat with DD18 who went to Disneyland Paris today. She said it "felt" like Disney and she had fun, but she misses her mommy.

I think it was way out of line and if I was Kate I would have been put off by that a lot...even if it made me look like a witch!!!

I would be pissed if someone asked my son that.

But I'm with you, why would you ask a child that? Was it because of all that is going on? Just seemed like a very bad thing to suggest to a child that he/she like one parent better. And that's excatly what a question like that suggests.

Now I do tell my neices that I am their favorite aunt...but that's because I'm the only aunt.

I think (but I really don't know, because I just can't imagine having a husband like Jon and I'm pretty sure my husband wouldn't last with a wife like Kate) it would depend on if I would need the income from the show as a single mom. I really don't know what issues she's been dealing with with Jon, so I don't know if she's pushed herself really hard in the marketing,thinking it may all be crashing down. I thought she said something like, Jon didn't want her at the house so she left (on tour) a while back. I really don't know after taxes and all they have purchased and hopefully put in the kids bank accounts how much they have left to live on, and maybe pay off the TLC contract. Jon's employment record isn't good, has never been good, so I think help from him would not be something to count on, and Kate would never bring in enough to support 9, even if the house sold and they moved back into the smaller one, that still has a mortgage. I doubt her books will sell as well right now. So I can't honestly say what I would do, because I'm not in the situation and I again only know some of the story.

I certainly couldn't imagine being married to a man like Jon either! That is a good point you made...maybe Kate has seen the end of her marriage coming for more than 6 months and figured she'd better rake in the $ before it happens. It's hard to know what either of them are thinking. Maybe there was a plan (in Kate's mind) to prepare for this. She did say that she felt Jon didn't want her home and then he's mad when she's away. What a mess.

Jon certainly does seem to have a sketchy job history. That would make me nervous as a wife and would be a huge red flag to try for more babies. But that's already been discussed to death on this thread!

Anyhow, I appreciated your post since it made me think about this issue in more detail. It really is sad to see though isn't it?



Kate is very driven and I don't necessarily consider that a character flaw. I just wonder if she's "driven" in the wrong area or motives.

I know what you mean...I haven't watched the last 2 episodes and don't plan to watch anymore of the show.

Which brings me to the next big issue; that these kids are working. They are on set, not kids being themselves being filmed doing everyday things. Mady probably has been sitting a long time and doesn't want to be there. None of the kids looks especially happy. That is the sad part. Why do they have to sit and look pretty while Kate interviews? well, I'm going to say it...like little props..

This is just a show. Much of it scripted.

Heck, yes they are working. It's not just fun and games for them. For Kate to continually deny that the kids are really working is a joke.

Based on the above statements, I think it's safe to say that these children are working.. Having to sit in front of cameras while their mother is being interviewed (not running around playing), being denied a drink of water because the "interview" is about to begin again, and much of the show supposedly being "scripted", all points to work - not play..

Jon & Kate need to stop lying to the public, each other, themselves, and their children..

I try to give Kate the benefit of the doubt. I understand that she has 8 children and she's very high mantance. I get that. So I try not to judge her. But when I see clips like this, it REALLY pisses me off!

SHE took a sip of water, in front of the child who was begging for some water, yet she still denied her water? That was cruel!!!

So Kate. She is just worried about her own needs all the time. The only reason she felt thristy was because Maddy was saying how thirsty she was. It didn't hit her to give Maddy water , but to take care of herself. Why didn't they just both drink from the same bottle?

Thank you. I've appreciated your posts too, and you have given me some things to think about. We need to be careful though, or people will think we both want the same thing. Oh, we do LOL!
For me, I guess what we have to remember, is that these are all humans, the kids and the adults. We really just don't know much. We can all have our guesses, but we really don't know if the kids are enjoying it, if it's a strain, if it's the cause of the breakup or if it prevented an earlier breakup. A half hour a week doesn't give us much insight and the rag mags are always on the look out for the worse to pass onto us, even if they have to stretch it and exagerate it. They certainly don't want to show us the hugs and the love. Wouldn't sell issues IMO. We've all done some things as mothers (well, at least I have) that if it was in a magazine, we wouldn't look good, and we've all done things that are really good for our kids that others never get to see. I can only wish that Kate means it and that she believes she is doing what is best for the kids and that it turns out that she is right. Until the books from the kids come out, we just don't really know. I'm certainly not going to judge another person's love for her children based on a sip of water.

I'm also curious..for those no longer watching the show, do you look at the pictures and the you tubes and the interviews? I wonder what is the difference between looking at those and looking at the TV, if it all upsets you? No hidden sinister thing in this question, I'm just curious, since I got a PM from someone that seems to be watching all of the above, and doesn't believe that keeps the interest in this show up, which might make it last even longer.

You know, if Kate took a sip of the water and then passed the bottle to Mady, there still would have been time, there's a decent chunk of time before they start filming after she screws the cap back on, Mady could have taken a quick sip of water. I assume she's old enough to drink from a bottle without needing a cup. Or if she was able to get a bottle, why couldn't she ask for one for Mady as well?

I feel bad for these kids, especially Cara and Mady. I wonder what they are going through in school, with this stuff all over the place. They're getting to the age where kids can be really mean, and it can't be easy for them to have this family drama all out in the open, and then having to face their peers day in and day out.

I no longer watch the show, because it is no longer interesting to me. I will look at tabloid pictures or occasional clips (like the water incident) when it interests me. I used to love to watch the show when it was more spontaneous rather than advertising other shows like Ace of Cakes and the motorcycle show. I think watching the show on TLC is what determines if this show will be on or not, and I hope that it is not any more. Ratings rule the tv world and I hope more people stop watching to end the insanity.

Several people in interviews and on some boards have said in their opinion, the reason the opener had so many viewers was because of the rags and posted pictures and stories on line. People who never heard of them now have and while the ratings have gone down some, they are higher than they were last season (because some are just there to see if there is a train wreck). Some have gone as far to say that TLC loves this and maybe even unknown to J & K are stirring the pot, to keep ratings high enough to have high paying sponsors.

So, if any of this is true, by opening those links, buying those mags (and readership may be up because of this..we all know to find them on line but other's don't) you (general you once again) may be helping the show to stay on, because of all the interest it appears to have.

Okay I feel left out. When I hit the link, I get "site unavailable". What did I miss? Also I saw on one of the entertainment shows that Kate called the police on friday about the hordes of people taking pictures outside the house. They didn't say what happened to the photographers.
