they don't now. they did before, IMO.

I still believe the basis for this particular episode was a direct result of blog research ... which is damage control in my book.

I just don't get the point of calling them out for doing good. Maybe their good deeds are now publicized as a result of the cries of the masses, but they're good deeds none the less. Why try to make it less than what it is? Does anyone really do completely selfless, altruistic deeds? You'd never know, I suppose, because that person would never tell you. Even in those cases, though, people get a good feeling when they give, so that's a little gain.

We usually donate leftovers to our church. I'd rather our items be given directly to those in need (as opposed to having them sold). I also had a friend who worked at Goodwill in high school, and the workers always took what they wanted before it did any good for the intended recipients of charity.

wow. that really stinks. people suck, sometimes. :(

for all I know, that could be happening here. I intentionally choose Salvation Army over Goodwill because they seem to get far less donations than Goodwill. The people I've dealt with seem quite nice and thankful, so I'm going to hope my donations are put to good use.

You make a very good point, and of course it's wonderful that they raised over $1000 for charity ... and I should back off the damage control thing just a tad.

But, what bothers me about the whole thing, and I think we're seeing it here and on other forums/blogs/etc. People are speaking out about these newer episodes, the staged feel of them. This episode, to me, was more of that. It was staged. I mean, seriously .. all those things I pointed out upthread have been significant points of contention on the most prominent JK8 blogs ... and they're all addressed in one episode? It's unfortunate, really, that Figure8/TLC/PR firm chose to focus on donating to charity for the "damage control" episode. Because it is good that they made this donation. It's just too easy for the naysayers to jump all over it, though.

Jon & Kate are damned if they do and damned if they don't at this point.

I can't watch it until tomorrow, it's too noisy at my house!! The kids are out of school and I have 5 teenagers here making gingerbread houses and being very noisy!! But with all the things teenagers could be doing, I'm not complaining that they are making a mess in my kitchen and singing songs from Broadway musicals. :goodvibes

that sounds like a lot of fun!! I can't wait to do gingerbread houses here!!

I was enjoying listening to them sing!! :goodvibes One of the boys and my DD17 were singing one of the duets from Rent (and although I can't stand that musical, listening to the two of them was nice!! )

Okay maybe I'm just really confused. I've been watching J&K forever, and always on Mon. nights... is there something I'm missing???? -How'd you all watch it last night??? I feel very confused right now:laughing:

Something I didn't understand about the yard sale episode..Kate was complaining ;) at the beginning about the poor turnout at first, and she said a few times that the sale "wasn't well-advertised" or something. Who advertised it? :confused3 I thought maybe it was a church-wide yard sale but it seemed like it was just the Gosselins. So was someone supposed to be advertising it for them? Also the signs with the spelling mistake :scared1: who ordered/picked them up and didn't notice the mistake?

Anyway I'm glad they raised the funds for the charity! Also I thought it was great Mady and Cara took part by selling the drinks. Good idea! :thumbsup2

I thought it was interesting they had some company print the signs, had a company deliver tables, and rented a UHaul. Why not make your own signs and use the tables from the church? Seemed like money down the drain when they are trying to raise money for charity. (I understand they wanted the UHaul since there was so much stuff - seems like there could be a better way).

This is exactly what I was wondering. Kate could have printed those signs from her computer. I wonder how much of their profit they actually lost for having to pay for those things?

I wish I could have been at that yard sale!!! I bet most of that stuff was brand new!!

I could care less who family is involved and who's isn't

I did watch last night, which was Monday :confused3

Michelle had kids at her house last night, so she's watching it (on tape/DR) today.

since it was on the show, I'm sure the production company absorbed the cost of the yard sale supplies.

I think it's interesting that UHaul is always blacked out - you would think, as often as JK8 use their trucks, that they'd want to be a sponsor in some way.

I was also confused about the advertising of the sale - if they have one every year, wouldn't they know where to put up signs and ads in the paper? They did make mention of another sale nearby that people might have been confused and thought was the Gosselin sale. I thought it was smart of them to put up signs pointing people in the right direction, LOL

i thought the episode was kind of boring. But I think it is great they donated the money. But in some way I felt sorry for the kids because it seemed like ALL their toys were going! Then Hanna saying Collin do you remember playing with this toy? and Collin said yes and she was like so do I. Made me sad. But I think kids grow up too fast anyways so getting rid of there baby stuff makes me tear anyways not matter who's kids they are. I am just that way. But I do think it was great they raised so much money for such a good cause and hopefully the kids will take the lessons they learned and continue it in their lives.

Most of what we saw was toys that they have outgrown.

I was sad to see the little tykes cars go. There are so many fond and funny moments from the show of the kids on riding them on the driveway.

I'll save you the trouble ;)

In this episode, we heard mention of:
~ having a yard sale and selling things donated to them for charity

~ making sure the kids were involved with the giving back

~ how much they miss Jon's dad*

~ Carla, a helper not seen much lately

ALL things mentioned on both of the pity blogs. Coincidence? C'mon.

* with regards to Jon's dad ... I do think his reminiscing was genuine. Of course he misses his father :( So for the sake of my argument, I don't want to use that. But I can see where other, less caring bashers would.

The naysayers will jump on anything.
Many of things are things that have been mentioned but not showed so the naysayers have doubted that these thigs really happen ...yard sales, charitible donations, seeing people who were familiar faces on the show etc.

Yet when they do those things it has to be staged/damage control.
As you have already said, it was a boring episode. Hmmmm maybe this is a hint ot why things like their yard sales haven't been shown before.

Can't find the post right now but someone said somethng like ...as usual Kate stood around and did nothing but order Jon around...
Really? I guess I watched a different show because I saw her stay and set up the sale while Jon went to get the kids, and she stayed and ran the sale while he took the kids home for lunch and a nap. She called radio stations to promote the sale etc. Yep that lazy Kate did nothing.

I just read in the paper that the Gosselins are coming to a local church around my area to speak about Faith, love and family. January 10, 2009. Tckets are only $10.00. I thought that was pretty cool. :)

Not going to go because going to Disney on Ice but would be cool to hear what they would talk about.

Kate had said that most things were never used. Most of the things they were selling had been donated and not used. It doesn't really make a difference if the stuff was new or not.

I wonder about that too. They gotta know that we know that's a UHaul, even with the blocking of the name.:rotfl:

Thank...I missed hearing that.

Oh did anyone else notice how many bottles of cleaning stuff they were selling? I wonder if a major company donated cases of cleaning supplies to them.
