Thanks FaithinKarma.
I truly dislike bigotry of any kind and wish that we could all agree to RESPECTFULLY disagree when there are differences.
My sister is a Democrat, and I love her to death. We don't agree on some things, but I would fight for her right to have her opinions. Another very good friend of mine is a Democrat living in the Boston area and volunteered at the DNC. I asked her if she could pick up a couple of things for my sister - just some small souvenirs. My sister was thrilled.
Yes, I am an alternate delegate to the RNC. The two parties handle alternates a little differently but the alternates go to both conventions. At the DNC there were a lot more delegates - can't remember the exact number but probably about 2000 more delegates than the RNC has, but the DNC only had about 600 alternates. For the Republicans there are fewer delegates - but one alternate for each delegate. I think it evens out and about the same number attend from each state.
Arkansas has about 30 delegates and the same number of alternates. As an alternate I do get to go to the convention and I get invited to the other events outside the convention. Only the delegates are seated on the floor. The alternates are usually upstairs in other seating but do have seats. Someone who was a delegate last time told me that they actually had better seats as alternates than the delegates on the floor did in terms of what they could see.
When a delegate has to leave the floor (to eat, go the to the restroom or to keep from dying of boredom!) an alternate will come down to take their place so there is always a full contingency of delegates on the floor.
Hopefully I will be able to do mini-trip reports from the convention.
