John Carter . . . What happened?

I was interested until I saw that this was not in fact about Noah Wyle's character on ER.

The poor movie didn't get a chance with the critics either...yet most people who have watched the film have said that it's a great film, not as bad as the critics are crowing about. Some critics even criticize it by saying it's copying from Star Wars ... uh .... reality check .... it's the other way around.

Disney Marketing blew it on this film. There's an article on the internet about how Disney Marketing threw this film under the bus. They decided to not throw more money at John Carter since they had already spent so much and the initial buzz at the exec level was it wasn't going to do very well ... so they pretty much abandoned it. The marketing was all wrong for this movie and the trailers were so spectacularly bad at conveying what this film was all about.

John Carter's salvation now lies in word of mouth and DVD sales.

Another article about Disney Marketing talks about how hard it'll be to market Pixar's Brave because it's about a Scottish princess. How will they market this to boys? And one concern of theirs... some execs (they're not all that bright, remember) think that some of the voice actors are hard to understand... apparently their Scottish accents are too strong. So let's hope Disney doesn't drop the ball on Brave like the did for John Carter.

I don't think it ever came to our little theater here. I saw the previews during another moview and thought I would give it a shot but since it never came here or did for such a short time, I missed it.

Anyway when I heard the title John Carter all I could think of was my college botany prof who would ramble on endlessly about his latest environmental cause and spiking trees so loggers would get what they deserved. I believe in protecting the envoronment, buy green products and try to decrease my carbon footprint and all that but this guy was an extremist, also ran unsuccessfully for Gov. No idea where he is now but when I heard John Carter he sprang to mind! Definitely not the association intended.

I totally agree with ya'll!
I would not have gone to see this movie it if my teenaged son and I weren't trying to find something to do together on a rainy Saturday. The title "John Carter" and the movie previews I had did not indicate that there was a story line that everyone could enjoy. I went in thinking I was sacrificing to see it, but I ended up truly enjoying myself. Too bad it was marketed so poorly.

I thought the marketing for Tangled was pretty bad too. Based on the commercials it just didn't look that great. I ended up waiting for the DVD and after I saw it I wished I had seen it in the theatre.

I think the marketing dept needs a reshuffle.

Who makes a movie out of a book called Princess of Mars and calls it John Carter? Princess of Mars sounds way more interesting. I don't know anyone who even knows what John Carter is about. Hopefully someone at Disney is
questioning the Rich Ross decision now and thinking booting out Dick Cook might not have been the smartest thing.

So true.... by the time I had figured out who John Carter was and how it related -I had lost interest. Now, I could care less.

io9.com posted a fan trailer that they say (and I agree) shows what the movie is way better than anything Disney released. It's a *tad* on the slow side, but actually makes it look like a movie I'd like to see.

Sayhello

Wow....that was a MUCH better trailer...the movie still doesn't seem extactly like my cup of tea, but you do get a much better idea of the movie. If I had seen this I probably would have taken my nephew to see it. I absolutely love Taylor Kitsch (he plays John Carter) but from what I saw early on, even Taylor didn't make me want to see John Carter.

Well, before reading this thread I had absolutely no desire to see John Carter. Now, I'm actually thinking of going to see it in the theater.

Thanks, guys. :)
