The President just accepted his resignation.

Hmmm, so that was the big annoucement this morning. Had to go to work, so I missed it.

I've had the Today show on all morning and they've ignored it. Probably would have cut into Beyonce's concert. ;)

I think we need a strong voice at the UN, but perhaps Mr. Bolton was not the right strong voice. I have a LOT of issues about what goes on there, or more importantly what DOESN'T go on there. Talk about a paper tiger, UN resolutions seem to have no teeth whatsoever.

There was not a snowballs chance in hell of him beeing confirmed anyway.

You need a strong voice and an effective voice. Bolton was neither. He was all bluster.

I really think Bush missed a golden opportunity here. He should've asked his father, Bush 41, to take over the job as UN ambassador. Bush 41 would've had no opposition domestically and is well respected internationally. He's also respected in the Middle East because he kept his word after the Gulf War.

Bolton's appointment made no sense. It was another example of the Bush arrogance/intransigence. He was determined to get his way and we've wasted 1 year in which the world has been exploding everywhere.

That's an interesting idea. 41 is a classy guy and well respected, even by people who didn't agree with him when he was in office. It's probably more job than he wants at this stage in his life though.

Bush 41 was the Bush I liked. I didn't vote for him, but I always thought he was a good guy. And you make good points.

"Bolton out" was a nice thing to read. I agree that #41 would have been a better choice. Almost anyone with good international skills would have been a better choice. I understand why he was appointed though. He respresented the polarization that W embraces very well.

Bolton's nomination was dead anyway. There was no way that Bolton would be confirmed by either the current Senate or the new and improved Democratically controlled Senate. There has been stories about bush wanting to get around the lack of Senate confirmation by appointing Bolton for either a second term or letting him be acting UN representative but there were issues as to whether Bolton could get paid under such gimmicks.

I am glad that bush accepted Bolton's resignation and did not try a gimmick to get around the requirement that Bolton be confirmed by the Senate.

That would be interesting. Certainly he would be a better choice.

I actually like Jeb too-I think he's more like his Dad than 43 is. I'm sure that everything he did while Gov of Florida wasn't perfect, but most of the folks I've talked to that live there seem to like him.

Thank you. I wish I could take credit for appointing Bush 41 as UN ambassador, but that idea was presented by Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) during the Senate debate over Bolton. Unfortunately, at that time, Bush 41 was seen by the ones surrounding his son as an appeaser who was the root cause of the current problems with Al-Qaeda and Irag.

The Terry Schiavo debacle merely confirmed my personal dislike of the man. I can't comment on his credentials because I don't live in Florida so I don't know what kind of Governor he has been. The only Bush I actually have any use for is Father Bush. He would make a wonderful Ambassador, but I'm sure it's far too strenuous at this stage of his life. The man deserves to pick and choose his activities.

Reluctantly I might add. The President was prepared to fight for him. he was tough, no nonsense and committed to representing this country in the un. its a shame to lose such a great public servant.

My folks have lived there for 8 years, my aunt for over 20 and my cousins for around 10 and they were all pretty satisfied with him. My cousin said that he really thought Jeb marred an otherwise excellent career by getting involved in the Schiavo thing. I don't recall what Jeb actually said, but he is Catholic and his religious faith may have put him on the side of those that were fighting the husband. I'm Catholic and I had a really hard time with that case.

Bolton was as polarizing as the man that appointed him.

Don't impeach Bush. Who would really want Darth Vader Cheney as president?
