Jock straps on their faces halftime show lol

It was a good show. Nothing controversial. No political statements. No shenanigans. Just a good show. I assumed the bandages/masks were a take on the plastic surgery recovery bandages he had worn previously. He has that "I Can't Feel My Face" song. He was no Bruno Mars but it was good.

All that said, even though I like him okay, I was surprised he was the Super Bowl halftime show performer. His songs just aren’t the typical fun, high energy type songs for a performance like the Super Bowl halftime show.
I was surprised by him as a choice as well, but it’s been a strange year.

Maybe they wanted someone not as famous, less cheering in the audience and all. Lol.

The Weeknd has the number 2 song of all time behind The Twist. He has had hit after hit and has been around for a bit. I loved the performance personally.

As for the masks, The Weeknd is rather theatric. Those are part of his current theme and function well as COVID masks too.

It is not about being Canadian, he is an internationally well-known artist.

And then there's the Selena/Bella/Justin/The Weeknd square to add to that.

Oh man, the sound was HORRID right out of the gate. So kind of killed Starboy. What a song to kill, an absolute shame to have technical issues right away. But happy that improved.

And then the funhouse kind of took away from Can't Feel My Face, in my opinion.

To me, he is one of those writers/singers where his songs will sound current when they are decades old. I think he is that talented. Especially with songwriting.

Too bad the entire set didn't play like Blinding Lights. But very happy it ended that way.

And yet, so many have never heard of him.

I actuallly really liked the funhouse part. In general, I thought it was pretty good and I do agree.....very talented.

Yeah good show, good performance, but it won't be remembered because it there wasn't that sizzle people expect from these the show.

I'm pretty sure the only thing that will be remembered from this Super Bowl is watching Patrick Mahomes caving under the pressure. And to be fair I can't really remember any particular halftime show...other than the "wardrobe malfunction" and Katy Perry on a giant tiger.

I don’t dislike his music, but I don’t particularly like it either. It’s just okay. At least he sings. It’s inoffensive, just kind of meh. I won’t change the station if a song of his comes on, but I won’t turn it up either.

It wasn’t a great performance, but it didn’t totally suck either. Average, I guess. I appreciate that he didn’t have the camera repeatedly zoom in on his bits and pieces. I had enough of that last year.🤣

I don't even know what or how to comment. :drinking1 Obviously it is not about age.

I didn't dislike the funhouse. I just wanted to hear the song. And I was too busy watching everything around him, and his various expressions.

That's the guy's name, the weekend?

No, it’s The Weeknd

He’s been nominated and/or won several Grammys over the last 5 or so years, but he’s Canadian, so I’m not surprised many of you don’t know him.

Not but he’s Canadian, AND he’s Canadian.

Not as famous? Maybe to you.

I thought he did a good job, but it was unfortunate he had technical issues as the start.

Let’s not forget that he was performing a half time show during a global pandemic, so there were so many more issues than any other performer has had to deal with.

I only tuned in to see him, and I didn’t see the show last year...couldn’t be bothered.

DS who is a huge Weeknd fan complained that the sound mixing was poor. He was watching just to see The Weeknd and complained that he was often hard to hear. Oh well, he has seen him a lot. 😄

I find all of the Super Bowl halftime shows to be too frantic/hectic like they have to jam too much into the time they have. I doubt he used his own money to produce the show. Read an article the other day where the performers don't get paid to perform since the exposure they get with such a large viewing audience is supposed to help their career. No idea who this performer was until I read something about him the other day. His name is spelled that way since there was already another Canadian performer who spells it the usual way.

Yeah, my husband may not have known who he was, but he’s been thankful that I‘m familiar w/ his work. ;-)

I am amazed anyone got through that movie (or the book!). But hey who I am to argue with the masses? :poop: ;)

Earned It is such a great song. I actually think if it was a stand alone release, that it would have been more popular. When Can't Feel My Face came out many didn't make the connection.

That is something I appreciate about The Weeknd, every song is completely distinct. He seems fearless that way.

I agree. As I have been reading this thread tonight I have been listening to some of his songs on Spotify at the same time and you are right. I also know how many of his songs I have casually listened to and really like.

I like The Weeknd's music. If he comes on the radio I am not switching the station. That said ...

The show was a bit lackluster to me. One of the songs I like, "Can't Fell My Face," was ruined by the jockstraps and the camera angles. Now that someone pointed out the reasoning behind the jockstrap look I appreciate it. But it still looked like jockstraps. Sorry. Jockstrap was the first word I said to my husband when the dancers came out.

Was it the worst halftime? No. Just a tad boring. The worst for me is still Maroon 5. Wowsa, that was bad, and I like that group as well. And then Beyonce back 2013. A lot of people loved that performance, I didn't. I thought Beyonce was beyoring. (Yeah I made that quip on Facebook back then, and it came up on my Memory news feed today. Gave me a chuckle.)

I kind of liked a less exciting show. I’ve had enough excitement lately and maybe I crave a little peace. I wouldn’t want Enya at the show but this one suited me I guess.

To be honest I thought that Mahomes did well despite having backups on his O line. He had some impressive escapes and there were more than a few drops by his receivers.

As for performances the two that stick out to me were U2 and Prince.

Performers have been offered payment in the past but I remember reading that U2 was the first to not take any payment for performing. But I do believe that they're given a budget to create their show.

Now did the Weeknd actually spend his own money on show production over and above the subsidy? I would guess so, because lying about it will get you nothing but bad press once you're found out.
