Ok, no lie, right now I am going out of my mind!

I live and work in the UK, and for the past month I have been applying for any job in Orlando, and so far got no where! It's driving me mad! I really want to work in the USA, and to be fair, Universal Orlando especially.

I've looked on Universal's jobsite, and you can only apply for jobs if you live in the USA or Canada. Where am i going wrong (apart from the obvious of course), have i missed something? Is there any way of applying for a Universal job if you are from the UK (and not a student).

Help me please!!

It can be a challenge getting a job in Florida even if you're from somewhere else in the United States. Almost four years ago I moved down from New Hampshire and I had a real hard time lining up anything for prospects simply because I wasn't down here in Florida. The less experience you have in the industry you're trying for, the harder it is going to be as well. I can't imagine you'll have a hard time getting an entry level job in many places - including Universal - once you are here, but it's going to be hard if they can't talk to you in person for interviews.

I'm in a similar position myself. I'd like to move to Florida, I've not applied for any jobs there yet and won't do for a year or more a have a degree and I'm working on gaining experience so that when the time comes I'll be in a better position to get myself into an interview situation.

If they want you to be from the USA or Canada and your from the UK go to Canada first. It's easier for people from the Common Wealth to get work here and I know here on the East Coast there is no shortage of jobs. We haven't really felt any of the economic down turn the USA and EU countries have. Then apply from here to Universal.

I can tell you from personal experience that getting a job in the Orlando area is extremely difficult if not impossible if you don't live here. There are so many people in the area looking for work that no agency is going to look at someone who is out of state unless you have some unique talent and are an exact match for the position. Your best bet would be to try and work with several of the temp agencies in the area to get your foot in the door but again...if you can't be here for an interview your chances are slim to none.

I'm not trying to discourage you but trying to be real and honest.

Until last year, Universal did have a 10 month program for UK non students. I was invited to an interview with them in London in December, but before the interviews, they discontinued the program. They said it was because of the economy.

If you really want to work in Orlando, go for the Disney Cultural Representative Program, that's what I did, and you don't have to be a student.

I also believe Universal has a VERY LARGE amount of applications, and when positions open, they just go to that pool of applications. They did the VERY large push for Potter employees, they were overwhelmed with applications.

As others have said, getting a job here without living here is gonna be next to impossible.

They also have Dr. Phillips High School right across the street and all it takes is a notice on the bulletin boards or their website to get plenty of new summer hires.

We live in the St. Petersburg area now, but when we lived in the Keys the job situation was the same you're describing. So many people like the idea of moving to a resort location and send resumes from home fill out applications
while vacationing. I don't think those applications get a lot of attention.

When I finished my Hospitality Management degree in Miami it was a little different as I could easily drive down to interview, plus I'm from Florida and understand what living here is like. I watched so many people come and go in the Keys because living there and vacationing there are so completely different. Human Resource people know this and, to avoid turnover, are more inclined to turn to locals when hiring.

Best of luck, OP.

:)

I'm surprised no one mentioned this, but do you have a visa or a green card? Because if you don't, there's no point applying for jobs here - places won't hire you unless you can legally work here, and almost nowhere will help you get a visa...they want you to already have one.

Your best options is Disney because they have programs where they will help you get a visa and you can work for them anywhere from a couple of months to more than a year. The International College Program and the Cultural Rep Program were both programs I did and they were great! Once you're over here and working, you can find out what other options there are if you want to stay.

If you want the website for those two Disney programs, just PM me :)

I'm in the Orlando area and I applied back in May for a job for the summer. Recently applied again a few weeks back. Probably has to do with the fact that I'm still a minor. It's frustrating!
