I know there are a lot of people looking for jobs right now and I hope the best for all of you. Luckily my fiance and I both have jobs at the moment. We are both teachers. I was fortunate to find a job in my hometown when I graduated 3 years ago. However, my fiance is an art teacher and the only job he could get is 2 1/2 hours away. He has been trying to get a job closer to home for 3 years. Actually this summer we have both been applying and interviewing to try to get jobs near the same location. I have been appalled by some of the treatment we've had. I understand that the market is so flooded with applicants that employers can do what they want, but this just seems unprofessional. One interview that he had driven 3 hours to was canceled the day before the interview, and we had already traveled there. Today he had an interview scheduled. He called to confirm it and was told that a temporary secretary had messed up all the appointments so he no longer has an interview unless they don't choose from their other candidates. In addition, many schools don't post job openings and they do not notify you that you didn't get the job. (Actually, my only rejection letter cam from a school that I did not apply or interview with :confused3) Maybe I am wrong but it seems to me that public school districts should be more transparent about their hiring procedures and follow some kind of regulations. Even though I strongly believe in public education, I can see how these practices can make it look bad.

I am really starting to be sad thinking about the beginning of the school year when he will probably have to move back to his old job and we will only see each other on the weekends. I was hoping we would get married soon, but I really don't want to start off with a long-distance marriage. We can't afford for one of us not to have a job, especially since we have student loan debt. I'm still trying to hope for the best.

Just wondering if other people have experienced these crazy job searching stories, too. Thanks for listening.

That's terrible that your fiance is being treated that way. I never had those issues, but I wasn't job hunting at a time when the market is flooded. I do know that in most districts, it's who you know, not what you know or how qualified you are. Is there anyway you can find an apartment or house somewhere in the middle, between your hometown and where he teaches? That way you'd both have a longer commute, but you'd be able to see each other more often. I drive an hour each way, this is my 3rd year coming up, and I'm not even looking for something closer until the economy improves.

my friend is working on a masters in education and has had a rough time getting a teaching job even though she is certified and in college to further her education. she has had people call her while she was pulling into the parking lot to cancel and reschedule like 5 times before telling her they were never interviewing her.

the worst job interview i ever had was a teaching job if that makes you feel better. i wasnt certified but qualified to be certified if i found a job. i disclosed all this in my cover letter and yet the lady still acted like i was somehow tricking her into thinking i was, showed up late and left me in an office for over half an hour until someone paged her again, and then asked me to demonstrate my foreign language skills by having a conversation about a tv show with myself. i said i had never watched the show and didnt know what to say and she got nasty and told me how would i engage my students. the best part was she didnt even speak the language! :lmao: i left with a bad taste and decided to take the job i currently have and have never looked back with regret that i decided not to go into teaching.

does your state have a website? i live in nj and they have an entire website devoted to educational jobs. i hope you have better luck. :wizard:

My husband is in the Navy stationed in San Antonio. I applied all over the place and could not get hired. I decided to apply last minute in a town 4 hours away. Much to my surprise they hired me two days after I applied. It also happened to be 10 days before school started. So, with hesitation I took the job hoping it would give me a years experience and more marketable in San Antonio for this school year. (It was my first year teaching)
So, I took my 5 year old and 7 year old and moved four hours away from my husband. We took turns driving to see each other every other weekend. It was NOT a fun situation. It was very difficult for me to resign from this teaching position as I loved it. BUT, I just could not live away from my husband with the two children for another school year. I still don't have a job here and I have applied all over. Looks like the year away was a waste, since the only reason I did it was to get a year under my belt and a better chance at getting hired this school year....... I can't really afford to not work either so I guess I will be subbing for the next year... :sad2::sad1: Maybe he could sub?
