I know there are a lot of people looking for jobs right now and I hope the best for all of you. Luckily my fiance and I both have jobs at the moment. We are both teachers. I was fortunate to find a job in my hometown when I graduated 3 years ago. However, my fiance is an art teacher and the only job he could get is 2 1/2 hours away. He has been trying to get a job closer to home for 3 years. Actually this summer we have both been applying and interviewing to try to get jobs near the same location. I have been appalled by some of the treatment we've had. I understand that the market is so flooded with applicants that employers can do what they want, but this just seems unprofessional. One interview that he had driven 3 hours to was canceled the day before the interview, and we had already traveled there. Today he had an interview scheduled. He called to confirm it and was told that a temporary secretary had messed up all the appointments so he no longer has an interview unless they don't choose from their other candidates. In addition, many schools don't post job openings and they do not notify you that you didn't get the job. (Actually, my only rejection letter cam from a school that I did not apply or interview with
) Maybe I am wrong but it seems to me that public school districts should be more transparent about their hiring procedures and follow some kind of regulations. Even though I strongly believe in public education, I can see how these practices can make it look bad.
I am really starting to be sad thinking about the beginning of the school year when he will probably have to move back to his old job and we will only see each other on the weekends. I was hoping we would get married soon, but I really don't want to start off with a long-distance marriage. We can't afford for one of us not to have a job, especially since we have student loan debt. I'm still trying to hope for the best.
Just wondering if other people have experienced these crazy job searching stories, too. Thanks for listening.
