I want to hear from anyone who likes Jiko but doesn't like Boma. Are there any of you out there? My DH and I might want to try Jiko on our next trip. We would probably eat the steak, but I'm worried about the appetizers, side items, and desserts. We did not enjoy Boma because of the spices. Are there any items that are not too exotic tasting?

Jiko is much tamer in the spicing than Boma. Some of the appetizers are unique but we have also had some pretty generic spiced soups and salads. Entrees and desserts are normal fare.

We love Jiko! Great menu and nothing we ordered was spicy (including the steak) and our family includes a couple picky eaters. We haven't tried Boma, but the menu does not appeal to my husband or our boys, and I'm a relatively light eater so it's not a particularly good value for us. But Jiko was a big hit and I definitely it!

I don't dislike Boma, but only pick it for convenience when we stay at AKL or if we were at AK. DW and I really liked Jiko. We had a flatbread app and cauliflower soup, and filet. They were all excellent - seasoned well but not over the top. We would make a trip for Jiko.

We do! Boma was just a bad overall experience for us. The kids were in TERRIBLE moods, we were sat 45 minutes late, and I choked on my meat. So that all might have added to our dislike  but we really didn't find the food to be very good. It was your typical bad buffet food that just had wierd spices dumped on top of it. (I apologize to all the boma lovers.)

Jikos however was an amazing experience. Everyone enjoyed their food. I don't remember what apps we had but we were on the dxdp so I know we got them. I personally wouldn't even begin to compare these restaurants to one another. The food is nothing alike.

Why bother going to Jiko at all if not for the different cuisine? The atmosphere is nothing particularly special. You can have a steak anywhere.

Well, because after trying a signature restaurant in February, my DH and I have decided we would like to try another one. We will be staying at AKV and it would be convenient to try Jiko. We enjoy steaks so it makes sense to order one, but I just don't want one overly spiced. I would also like to enjoy the apps, side items, and desserts. You are right about getting a steak anywhere; we are also thinking about trying Yachtsman Steakhouse, but like I said, since we will be staying at AKV, if we can get a good steak there plus other food we will enjoy, why not?

I don't like spicy (meaning hot) food at all and have some difficulty at Jiko. I also can't eat cilantro. I always ask "is it spicy" and ask about cilantro and if they say a little, I ask how spicy etc. But the servers are very helpful and you can still have a delicious meal there. They will be honest and tell you what will work. There have been a few times that I thought something sounded like it would be good for me but was then a little to spicy for me - in particular there was a delicious flat bread that turned out to have a sauce on it that had more heat than I can really enjoy.

When you say you don't like spicy - if you mean hot - you will still be able to enjoy your meal. But if you mean you don't like the flavor of a lot of spices, Jiko may not be your best choice. It is not that you won't be able to find something you will like, but it is expensive and other signature restaurants may be better for you.

We have not been to Boma's because the menu does not appeal to us.
But we have been to Jiko's 4 times and enjoyed it each time. I don't think we are very adventerious eaters, but we do enjoy trying new things - just not over the top different.
I love the barbeque chicken flatbread appetizer and get it each time.
Try it, I think you will be pleased.

No, I don't mean spicy hot. I mean the African spices that they use. We also don't like couscous, curry, naan, or chutney. We enjoyed Sanaa but not Boma, but we were able to order less exotic foods at Sanaa. I'm just wondering if Jiko is more like Boma (more African) or Sanaa (more Indian). If I can't get something at Jiko that is not exotic/African, then I will leave AKV to go eat elsewhere.

We loved Jiko. The food, the atmosphere and the service - all great. Our waitress brought us a "little something from the chef" which was a cauliflower and date cream soup and it was absolutely delicious. :lovestruc It's not in the menu and if it was, I would definitely order it each and every time. My children 11 and 6 both enjoyed their meals. Both do not like children's meals so there were no problems.

We don't like Boma but not for the same reason as most. The food was fine, nothing great but fine. The reason is that we don't like buffets. We try to avoid them.
