Jiko or Artist Point?

I have been to both Artist Point and Jiko many times and love them both, just in different ways. If I had to pick only one, however, I would go with Jiko.

Have been to both, though a little while ago. I prefered Artist's Point. I am a pretty adventourous eater, but I just didn't like the combinations at Jiko. I really did not enjoy my entree. I thought, well I only have to eat the bits I like, bit it didn't really work out. Though looking at a recent menu, I think I would probably do a lot better now. The main thing though was the fact that our server was atrocious. She really was not very attentive at all. Which was night and day to our Artist's Point server, Pok.

Having said that I would be interested to try Jiko again, but probably only if I was staying at AKL. I have enough trouble narrowing my dining choices as it is, without adding resort places too.

I think you would have a great meal at either. Perhaps you could print out a menu for each and hand it around your group, get an idea of what they would like to eat. If you don't tell them which is which, you might get a better impartial view. They are both very atmospheric restaurants, although you will find a few kids, they do both have a more grown up feel.

Enjoy.

I agree that this is a very difficult decision. I also agree that no matter which you do chose you won't go wrong. For us, I'd chose AP 75% of the time, with the other 25% being Jiko just so it doesn't get left out.

IMO Jiko has never recovered frrom losing their 'signature dish' - The monkfish. Further they removed their best appitizer (duck & pork firecracker). Thier flatbread is great and the fish (it was halibut when I was last there) is quite good too.

AP offers at least two different items that I think are great, their signature cedar plank salmon and the buffalo steak. Plus they have a smokey portobello soup that is out of this world and I am not a soup eater or a fan of mushrooms. Sadly I read here that they discontinued the coffee two ways desert...The cobbler is still great but so was the 2way...

Anywho, my choice is AP by just a little bit.

Ok, all you Jiko lovers out there....

I just made a reservation for our (DD 21 and myself) upcoming trip in May.

What would you recommend on the menu for 2 failry adventurous eaters?

My DH had the maize and sweet potato tamales and he said they were great. I had the kenyan coffee bbq chicken flatbread - yum. He is a vegetarian and I had the Filet so I can't really help you out with the more interesting entrees.

I want more than anything to enjoy Jiko. We've been 3 times and each experience was progressively worse. We've never had great service and the food has always been sub par. AP on the other hand, is one of our faves. We've been about 6 times. The service is always great and the food is usually on point. My only complaint is that the menu at AP rarely changes.

Thanks for all the wonderful responses! All the dishes mentioned sound so scrumptious I can't wait to go now!!! Actually, they sound good enough that I may try to get the group to do both. I don't know if 2 sig restaurants plus HDDR would be too much or not?

Jiko - great food AND wine

Plus wandering the lobby, animal viewing area and relaxing at Victoria Falls just add to the whole experience

Look at the menus online, see what most appeals to your group. If your are more adventurous eaters, Jiko will work; if not AP will do just fine. IMO the atmosphere at Jiko is also a little nicer (darker, more quiet and intimate) than AP (open floor, a little louder). So it's a close one, but agree with Jiko mostly because AP has a more limited menu. FWIW.

For us Jiko hand down.

The filet is to die for. We have also enjoyed the chicken (best chicken we have ever had) and the short ribs. Taste of Africa is an amazing starter as is the Kenyan flatbread.

I believe they took the monkfish off the menu because it is on the verge of being an endagered species...
