Soo.. I'm SUPER excited that my mom is going to be coming on the upcoming trip with me and my boys (51 days to go!) and of course they boys are super excited that nana is going to be coming! I'm loving the idea of an extra set of hands this time! :thumbsup2

However, a few years ago my mom was in a car accident and experienced a lot of neck/shoulder trauma from it. After lots of therapy she's pretty much back to her normal self, but she's worried about how jerky some of the rides might be and she doesn't want to aggravate the injury again. Last year she met the boys and I at Hollywood Studios for a 1/2 day (surprise to them since she was in the area), and she was able to ride Star Tours and Toy Story Mania with no issue. Aside from that she hasn't been in 16 years! :faint:

I know she'll be fine on things like IASW, Pirates, etc... and of course shows. How about Big Thunder Mountain? Splash Mountain is only one drop right? I've never ever done Test Track?? She will avoid Everest, RNR coaster, ToT, SM...

Is there anything else you would definitely AVOID, or say that "X" is about as jerky as Star Tours so we should be good for that??

I just love rides and don't have these "problems" so I don't notice the ride jerkiness like she will!

Thanks :)

Dinosaur and Mission Space come to mind as rides that are jerky.

I'm sure others will come up with more.

I was going to suggest Dinosaur also...That really tosses you...

Toy Story Mania possibly as well :(

Dinosaur for sure. And, with her history of neck problems, she may want to avoid BTMRR as it may be hard on her neck when ascending and during the tight turns. Better to be cautious so that she can enjoy all of. her visit to the parks

Kilimanjaro Safari can be bumpy. Sometimes fine, but sometimes crazy bumpy.

I would say any of the mountains would be a bad idea. Test track as it starts stops and swerves around.
I've had three spinal surgeries and while I managed on test track, thunder mountain was not good (yes I had read the warnings before so it was my choice to ride) went on once for nostalgia sake and it throws you around more than you think. Oddly back was fine it was my neck that bothered me.
I would also say rock n roller coaster would also be a bad idea.

Ok that's a good start :) Thank you!

I think we are going to avoid Dinosaur all together... don't want to deal with bad dreams during the trip.. lol

And yes, don't want mom to hurt herself and be uncomfortable during the trip either. However, I don't want the boys to decline at experience and sit out cuz my mom is. Y'know how kids can be!! lol

Can anyone tell me about Test Track? I've never been on this before, ever!

Space Mountain, it is very jerky, kicked my butt, 2x in a row was my max. The Speedway cars are too, if you have a kid driving and using the pedals. By kid I mean 5-8 yr old. Killed my back. Rockin Roller Coaster, like space mountain is dark so you don't know which way to lean, but alot less jerky. Dinosaur will also be super jerky.

Big Thunder, Expedition Everest, Tower of Terror, seem to feel the same jerkiness to me. Splash I thought was smooth.

I would avoid Test Track. I haven't been on it since they changed it, but was told that the track is the same. If that is the case, there was a part of the ride that was bumpy and another part where you swerved to avoid an oncoming truck. I wouldn't risk it by riding it.

Another that hasn't been mentioned is Winnie the Pooh. It has some jerks and a part where you bounce with Tigger for a while. Might want to avoid that one, as well.

Test track is a ride in a car round a test track and you are along for the ride. Not exactly sure what the script is but there was a break test and a collision avoidance bit before a speed lap on a banked track. They have updated it since I was last on so not sure if all those elements are still in but the speed lap is.

How sensitive is her injury? Even some rides that'd you'd never think about can have some jerky motions to them.

For example, at the end of Small World, it's not uncommon for your boat to be jolted as other boats bang into the back of yours as you approach the exit platform. It's not violent, but it does send your back and neck in that wiplash type of movement. Same type of thing on the Speedway. You never know who's going to treat it like a bumping car as you near the exit.

Dinosaur and Space Mountain are the two that hurt my back the most. Primevil Whril is essentially a wild mouse ride, so it's designed to have sudden sharp movements.

Space Ranger spin can be jerky, depending on who's on the joystick.

Even rides like Pooh can stop and start again unexpectedly. Again, it depends on how sensitive her injury is.

Ooh see, this is all good information that I might have not even considered. I'll be sure to let her read everyone's replies and then in the end she'll have to decide for herself. At least she can have other people's opinions that are probably better than mine.... ;)

Yes, avoid Dinosaur for sure, absolutely hated that jerky ride. I don't recall test track being bumpy except for one short stretch, but from what everyone else has said youmight not want to risk it.

My MIL is and doesn't like rides that jerk. She is not a fan of Big Thunder Mountain, Dinosaur, Primevil Whirl or Expedition Everest.

IMO, Space Mountain is the worst for being jerky (this is aggravated by the fact that you can't see where you're going and, hence, can't anticpate anything).

My MIL has the same type issues. She broke her neck and collar bone, shattered her ankle and fractured her skull in a severe automobile accident several years ago. Here is her list of won't dos:

AK
Dinosaur and Primeval Whirl are definite no ways
Everest she hasn't tried, but that one is highly questionable- not the bumpiest coaster, but she probably won't want to risk it.
Safari- MIL rides and is fine with. It is bumpy, but it doesn't bother her at all. I would try to say out of the back row if possible, as I think that is the bumpiest.

DHS
Tower of Terror and RNR are absolute no ways
Star Tours she has not tried because she hasn't been there since it re-opened in 2011- I'm not sure about whether that one would bother her. I could see her trying it.
She is absolutely fine with Toy Story Mania even though it jerks slightly- she loves that ride.
Great Movie Ride is fine.

Epcot
Test Track is an absolute no way- it can be very jarring
Soarin is her favorite ride at WDW
I can't think of anything else at Epcot that is even questionable for her- everything else is fine.

MK
Space Mountain and Big Thunder are absolute Nos.
She has not tried splash because it is a very big drop that jars at the end- this is another one that might be risky
Some others mentioned Pooh and Buzz- she always rides those and has never had an issue.
The Speedway, as someone said depends on who is driving the car- it can be a little jerky, but MIL doesn't have any issues with it.
I can't think of any others at MK that are an issue for her or that she doesn't do.

I broke my neck (between C1 and C2) in 2006 so I stayed off the jerky attractions at Disney World. Late in 2011, I finally asked my doctor what my limitations were. His reply - "I'm more concerned about you being rear-ended in a traffic accident than riding a roller coaster".

My advice - have your mother check with her doctor.

For the record, the attractions I avoided were -

Magic Kingdom - all three mountains and the teacups
Animal Kingdom - Expedition Everest, Dinosaur, Kali River Rapids, Primevil Whirl
Epcot - Test Track, Mission:Space
Studios - Rock N Roller Coaster, Twilight Zone

And now I do all of those with my doctor's blessing and my absolute delight. Have your mother ask her doctor - if I hadn't, I'd still be sitting those out.

Follow the link in my signature to the disABILITIES FAQs thread. One of the posts in page 2 of that thread has a list of all the attractions that WDW has placed a warning on, plus a little bit of information about what may cause the warning.

As other posters mentioned, there are also done attractions without warnings that may cause problems for some people.

my spine/neck only hurts on Space Mountain. I totally agree on this one.
