JFK or LaGuadia?

I live in Connecticut and am looking to book a flight in November to Orlando to visit the mouse. Looking at the fares right now, it is much cheaper for me to travel to NYC (and get a non-stop) on Delta than to fly from Bradley.

The fares from LGA and JFK are the same, so I am wondering is there an advantage to choosing one airport over the other? Looks like parking is cheaper at JFK than LGA. Is there something else I need to consider?

JFK is a longer distance from the direction you'll be traveling. Depending on the time of day and traffic volume, it could take anywhere from an extra 20 minutes to over an hour to get to JFK.

I am traveling from the Bridgeport/New Haven area and we would be leaving on a Sunday afternoon.

I'm in Trumbull and have done both a number of times. Without traffic i have made it to LaGuardia in 50 minutes!!! Then there was that one year where they closed the Whitestone to truck traffic and vurtually shut down the highway. Took 3+ hours and we almost missed our flights.

That said, we fly out of NYC all the time because of the great prices and non-stop flights (stop overs can have their own nightmares so we avoid them if at all possible). JFK has had a lot of remodeling done and is great. Much more parking, long term is easy with a shuttle to the terminals. They have the "kiss and fly" drop off. It does take about 15 minutes more to get there. I just got our Feb 2014 flights and we are going out of JFK.

It shouldn't be much more than 15 minutes difference driving between.
I would assume you are coming down I95 which should no be too bad on a Sunday.

If you choose JFK and GPS tries to send you to the Van Wyck expressway, ignore that. I think a better route from CT to JFK would be to take the Cross Island PKYW which turns into the Belt Pkwy and then to JFK.

For LGA you don't have much of a choice... Whitestone bridge and keep going to the airport.

either one. Parking is a little cheaper at JFK, but LGA is closer. I'd lean towards LGA if it were me.

I wouldn't take the cross island...that would take you east to have to go back west to JFK.

Yes but your other choice is the Van Wyck Expwy. I don't think I have ever seen that road not bumper to bumper. A quick check at google maps from where the routes would diverge shows a 4 minute difference. The Cross Island does get backed up at some points but not like the Van Wyck.

Agree to disagree.

I prefer to take the LIE to the Van Wyck...never had issues.

On a Sunday, I would definitely have no reservations about taking the Van Wyck.

I absolutely hate flying out of LGA. I have flown out of Newark and White Plains to in order to avoid LGA. JFK is much better.

Since you are traveling on a Sunday in November, what date is it? If it is November 3rd, please be aware you'll be dealing with NYC Marathon traffic. Even if you aren't in the marathon's path, travel throughout the area can be dense that day.

As a matter of fact we ARE traveling on the 3rd. Do you think traffic would be affected that far out?

I never fly nonstop but, we won a trip in 07 and had a layover at Laguardia en route to New Orleans. I really thought it was a nice airport. The people there were very nice, which shocked me and dh(I had assumed New Yorker's would be a bit rougher but, we loved them!) We fly out of Cleveland Hopkins and this airport seemed a nice little change for us! It is amazing seeing that New York skyline too!;) We had never been there and I was in awe!

Have you checked Westchester (HPN)?

We live in CT and 6 of our last 7 flights have been from HPN instead of BDL.

Traffic throughout the NYC area is affected because of the limited travel paths off of Long Island. I would allocated an additional hour for travel than what you previously planned to account for potential marathon delays.

There is a chance of more traffic around lga on a marathon day but it shouldn't be too insane, I live between the two airports and last year we drove to the marathon in Long Island city to watch family run, not too much worse than any other day. I prefer JFK a lot more, it's just nicer, cleaner, a bit safer due to the short runways at lga. I have to agree taking the vanwyck is usually fine, but both ways are ok! The signs are pretty clearly marked. Depends on the time of day. Driving here is certainly a pita, mostly because people can't follow traffic laws. But what can ya do!
