JFK disturbing trend

We just flew Jetblue Buffalo-to-JFK-to-MCO. Last week. Anyhow, on our trip down both Buffalo and JFK required photo ID and the boarding pass before actually getting on the plane.

On our way home we showed photo ID to actually board the plane in MCO. But we didn't in JFK. As a matter of fact. The had an announcement playing---- it said please have your boarding pass ready prior to boarding. Photo ID is no longer required.

Now, what's to say I didn't give my boarding pass to someone else??? I just thought that for an airport (much less in NYC) to not do everything they could to be secure was reckless.

As far as I know that recording has been playing in airports across America since mid-October. I think the rationale for not rechecking ID with the boarding passes is...no one can get to the gate area without clearing security...so even if you did give your boarding pass to someone else they would have had to have cleared security before you gave it to them.

I can't imagine what additional security measure it would be to recheck ID again at the gate.

I don't know if there is any rhyme or reason for this.

We flew to Vegas two weeks ago, and didn't have to show ID at the gate when we left. Coming home, of course I didn't have it ready, and we had to show it, pretty embarrasing to have to hold up the boarding line.

Some airports require the ID at boarding and others do not. You have to show it several times to get to the gate and I think that is enough.

I don't remember ever showing my I.D to get on the plane. When you check in you show I.D and then you put it in the little ticket sleeve they give you. They check your I.D again at the security check. I remember then being told to put my I.D away because I would not need it any more.

Everybody past this point has been screened, had their I.D checked, and has a boarding pass. When you come off another plane you are already in a secure area. Everyone else in this area has passed a check point already, hopefully.

I guess you could give your boarding pass to someone else at this time. But, that person would have to already had a boarding pass of his own for another flight and have been screened. I guess that they think people aren't going to do that. If they do, they were checked already at the security gate.

We just flew Jet Blue out of JFK this past Feb. The gate area was so close to the actual check in gates it didn't even faze me that they didn't check my ID to get on the plane.

BTW they didn't check our ID"s to get on the plane at MCO either, must depend on the staff that's working or something.

We had a great trip. I was just alittle confused at that was the first time EVER we didn't show ID to board. I guess I understand that everyone has to go through security, just seems to leave to many loop holes to me.

At PIT, when TSA took over security, they quit requiring the ID at boarding. They also don't do the random baggage checks anymore at the gates. I have thought that someone could come off a connecting flight and hand their boarding pass to someone else. Not so much as a security threat, but some way of beating the ticketing system.

This depends on the TSA arrangements at your airport and signals nothing about security.
For example in Nashville I don't have to show ID , but I do in Atlanta where I connect.


I just keep it accessible and don't worry about it.

Before 9/11, I don't ever recall being asked for an id more than once. It could have been at checkin or the gate if I had no bags to check but never more than once. I for one am very glad not to have to show it again as I board as we did the first few times we flew after 9/11....too much to juggle.
