one?

I need to find a appraiser to appraise my new diamond in central Indiana. Any ideas on how to go about that? I went to ASA's website and looked there but nothing in Indiana...

Thanks!

Your Insurance comapny should be able to provide a reputable jewelery appraiser. It's always a nice feeling to have it appraised for a higher $$ value than you paid, but the MOST important thing is that the description of the item be as accurate as possible (especially with gemstones). Most insurance operates on replacement value, so it doesn't really matter what the monetary value is listed at (that will only inflate your premium), the description will be what they base the replacement value on, if you are unfortunate enough to have a loss. Hope that helps. Here in NY we have a IGI (International Gemmological Institute), which is almost as good as GIA (California), but I don't know if they have offices in your area.

I'm sure you've heard the stories before, but NEVER let a jeweler out of your sight with your gemstone.

My fiance just picked up my engagement and wedding rings today. He requested the jeweler that he purchased from to prepare a written appraisal for us.

I would think the jeweler you bought from would do the same for you, at no charge. Some jewelry stores will appraise rings bought elsewhere, but may charge you to do so.

Here is a link to the pictures that are posted on the TT today of my rings!

It was recommended to me to get the appraisal at the time I picked the rings up, so I wouldn't have to pay another jeweler to do it.

I would really recommend you get your jewerly appraised from someone other than the party you purchased it from. I know our insurance company required it just to make sure everything is on the up and up. I know 99% of the time it would be but unfortunately these days you can never be too careful. Most large jewelry stores or big department store will have someone on site or retained to do it. I've used Macys in the past and have been happy with their service.

Ask around about reputable independently owned jewelery shops; I'd avoid the big ones like Zale's or Kay, mostly because I feel your taking a crap shoot there; you could get a genuine appraiser, but you might just end up with a salesperson who watched the "how to appraise a diamond" videotape. Not to dis anyone who works at a jewelery chain; it has just been my experience that those working at smaller shops tend to be more knowledgable.
