Can a person wear jewelry though airport security?
I don't mean huge amounts of jewelry; I just mena a ring or two, earrings etc.
I ask because I have a smallish mother's ring I wear all the time, and it doesn't fit quite as well as it might anymore. Taking it off requires copious applications of liquid dish-soap, and a lot of OUCH.
If I wear it through security, and it sets off a metal detector of some sort (would it? it is small, do they even detect that much?) will I have to try to take it off? Or will I be able to say to the nice TSA person, look its my ring, here on my finger... and would that be enough for them? I guess I could soap it off before I left home and put it in a pocket or something, but I would be afraid to lose it.
Any experiences with rings, and security?

I don't think you'll have any problem with your ring. The only jewelry I've ever had to remove was a thick silver bangle bracelet. HTH

I wouldn't worry. Rings don't set off the alarms. Jewelry that you wear everyday is usually fine. I wear my rings, earrings and necklace through security all the time. Gold and silver is usually not a problem. But, I would keep it to a minimum, just in case they do ask you to remove anything if you set off the alarm.

Unless you are in the habit of wearing a LOT of it, precious metals will NOT set off the detectors. (Really large silver pieces such as squash-blossom necklaces, wide cuff bracelets or plate-type belt buckles might, but normal-sized jewelry silver jewelry will not.) Large metal costume jewelry usually will set it off, but not the good stuff.

If it does set off the detector you would be required to remove it unless you could demonstrate that it could not be removed. However, a ring (especially a gold ring) won't set it off.

NEVER remove jewelry (I'm talking costume now) at the checkpoint without putting it in a ziploc bag and securely zipping it inside your carryon before sending it through the checkpoint. DO NOT PUT JEWELRY IN THE BOWLS! It would be at high risk of getting either stolen or mangled in the belt machinery.

Yesterday at MCO a gentleman and his young son ahead of me in the security line had a silver metal cuff type braclet that he said they couldn't take off. They did set off the detector and a male search agent was called. I flew with my 3 rings, earings, a silver pendant with chain, bracelet and ankle braclet and had no problem either at MCO or DTW this past weekend.

I fly almost weekly and usually wear earrings, 1 or 2 necklaces, 1 or 2 rings, 2 bracelets, watch, all gold except for the watch. Never setoff the detector. My niece did set it off once with a large metal belt buckle.

Thanks everyone!
I feel much better now! :grouphug:
