Not particularly surprised he was fired. DH & I discussed it last night and would have been more surprised had he NOT been fired.

Copied from article online:
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets fired coach Eric Mangini on Monday, a day after a team that harbored Super Bowl hopes with five games left failed to make the playoffs.

The Jets started the season 8-3 under quarterback Brett Favre, beating New England and Tennessee on the road in consecutive weeks and raising visions among their fans of a Super Bowl trip.

But they went 1-4 in their final five games, losing to Denver, San Francisco, Seattle and Miami and barely beating Buffalo. They did not reach the postseason for the second straight year despite a massive offseason spending spree that included trading for Favre after his retirement and unretirement from Green Bay.

The 39-year-old Favre had just two touchdown passes and nine interceptions in those final five games, led the league in interceptions with 22 and complained after Sunday's 24-17 loss to Miami of shoulder, neck and back pains. The win gave the Dolphins the AFC East title under Chad Pennington, the Jets' longtime quarterback who was cut when the team obtained Favre.

The 37-year-old Mangini was 23-26 in three seasons in his first head coaching job. He had another year remaining on his contract. In 2006, his first season, he took a team that had been 4-12 the previous year to the playoffs with a 10-6 record and earned the nickname "Mangenious" from the local tabloids.

"For the current New York Jets organization, we've made the decision to move on," owner Woody Johnson said at a news conference Monday morning. "It's a judgment call.

"I don't think it was one thing," he continued. "We had to go in a different direction. There's nothing specific. It's just a call we made. Hopefully, it's correct."

Johnson said the final decision was made Sunday night but that the process had been going on a long time.

"We met with the coach this morning," Johnson said. "We thanked him for all the good things he had done for us, we thanked him for his dedication and his loyalty. But he understood."

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum praised Mangini, saying he did not think he had lost the team.

"Again, Eric has left a really good foundation here, and we're looking forward to building on that foundation," Tannenbaum said.

The Jets, 4-12 a year ago, began the offseason by spending big money on veterans, notably offensive linemen Alan Faneca and Damien Woody and linebacker Calvin Pace. They also traded away linebacker Jonathan Vilma, a young standout, because he did not fit Mangini's 3-4 scheme and traded for Kris Jenkins, a 350-pound defensive tackle with a history of back problems.

Jenkins was a standout during the early part of the season but tailed off toward the end.

Thoughts?

Well I know one team that he won't be getting a job with :thumbsup2

Seriously, it doesn't surprise me. Teams have a very short span for a coach to make good, or you're out of there. He started out ok, but it was downhill from there pretty quick. I don't know how much he had to do with the Pennington/Favre thing, but that was a huge disaster, he called out one of the top coaches in the game (a former mentor/friend as well) and then proceeded to suck. Not really something to hang your hat on in the coaching industry. Personally, I wish he'd stay in NY, it makes them that much more beatable :)

Good grief, they need a QB, too (I assume Favre is really going to retire this time). Nightmare city if Cassel winds up there. Oh well, such is the business of football.

Derek Anderson will soon be available:rolleyes1

And I know of at least one team that IS interested in Mangini. ;)

Someone had to pay because Favre didn't save the day......

The Jets are like the Mets - they have a losing mentality......

Hopefully, things will improve for them next year.....

Last year, DA seemed so good. This year he did not seem to have the same "touch" on his passes. His short passes were thrown like 98 MPH fastballs. Of course, last year his offensive line played better, Braylon was actually catching the ball (this year he couldn't catch a cold), Winslow was healthy, Jamal Lewis wasn't battling a bad back (lots of folks don't realize Jamal was playing in pain all season), Jrevicis was healthy.

So, the Browns will get Paoli from NE, and it wouldn't suprise me if he hires Mangini to be the head coach.

One thing I will say for Romeo Crennel, he stood up for his guys and had no problem taking the heat. I don't particularly think he is a good head coach, but he is a class act and a stand-up guy. Sorry it didn't work out for him.

Sign me a long-suffering former-Clevelander living on the border of Steelers/RAvens/Eagles country in Central PA.

Edited to add: GO CAVS!!!!!!!

I was never on the DA bandwagon. Was never an accurate QB, even in college.

RAC was a standup guy, to a fault. Great guy, but not HC material.

Hopefully Paoli does come here, lots of rumors going around about who will be next HC.

I don't think the Pats are going to let anything happen to Cassell until they know for certain that Brady is 100%. And if Brady is ready to go, then I wouldn't be surprised if the Pats stick a franchise tag on Casell to make sure that he doesn't end up somewhere that they don't want him. I would imagine that he'll probably go someplace like Minnesota or San Fran.

I don't think they'll franchise him, too expensive. Personally, I'd ditch Brady and keep Cassel, but I know Patriot Nation would skin me alive for even thinking that, much less saying it. He's a younger, cheaper version of brady who now is in his mid-career with a serious knee injury. Those knees linger and never really seem to go away, IMO. Let him take his traveling circus somewhere else....Sorry, off soap box now :)

Heard Chris Mortenson this morning say Brady got down on his knee to propose to Giselle.

I think that Cassel did a fantastic job this season. He is going to fetch a fine salary over the next 5 years or so. If the Pats aren't careful they will lose him. Like you said, Brady has those bad knees and he is way behind on his rehab b/c of infection and scarring his future is def not certain.

I won't believe that Brett Favre is retiring until I see him inducted into the Hall of Fame! Just kidding.

Anyway, the coach had to go. Someone has to answer for their poor record. They pretty much imploded during December. No one jump on me here, but it was sad to see Favre leave the NFL like that (if he really is retiring).

I think that mentally he still has the desire and drive to play football but his body is holding him back. It is clear that he loves the game and that is what makes it so sad.

Oh yeah. His body took a beating in yesterdays game. It was hard to watch. I think he still has it in him to play, but he can't take those kind of hits anymore.

I think Mangini is a good coach. He probably could have stayed, but I know its tough for anyone in that NYC media pressure cooker.

It will be interesting to see who fills all these coaching slots.

I agree with you on the NYC media pressure cooker. If you are a NY based team for any sport... you have to be flawless and even then they can and will boo you. It is a, "what have you done for me lately" town.

Rumor is Farve doesn't like Mangini's play calling. BF wanted to come back next year, but not if Mangini was coach. Guess who isnt retiring....

Someone needs to tell him that he's done.

Someone needs to tell him that he's done.

His wife, maybe? :rotfl2:

Nothing wrong with him continuing to play if he wants to. But he's gotta realize that his poor body is only going to take so much punishment.....

I just hope that Ben Rothlisberger isn't forced to quit playing due to this concussion he got yesterday....
