OK, so we just applied for passports for the kids for our January Disney cruise, and had to send in the kids' birth certificates with the applications. I'm just realizing that if it takes longer than 6 weeks to get the passports, we won't have their birth certificates for our July trip to DW. I only fly about every 2 years, so don't know what the norm is these days - do the airlines - specifically Jet Blue - require birth certificates for kids these days, or still pretty much require nothing? (They're 7 and 3, so there's not a question of an under-2 lab baby needing proof of age or anything)

Thanks for relieving my anxiety hopefully!

We have flown Jet Blue at least 5 times with our kids (now ages 4 and 6) and have never been asked for their birth certificates. Not to worry. :goodvibes

ID is not required for kids unless you are claiming them as a lap-baby under the age of 2.

As a pp said, Jet Blue requires a photo ID for those 18 years and older.

The reason you would need the birth certificate is for proof of age (to prove that a lap child is indeed under the age of two)...and not identification.

For identification purposes you would need a picture ID so the childrens' birth certificate will do you no good anyway.

From the JetBlue website:

ID Requirements for Domestic Travel
Customers over the age of 18 will be required to show a U.S. federal or state-issued photo ID that contains the following information: name, date of birth, gender, expiration date and a tamper-resistant feature. These IDs include:
U.S. passport
State-issued driver's license
U.S. passport card
DHS "Trusted Traveler" cards (NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
U.S. Military ID
Permanent Resident Card
Border Crossing Card
DHS-designated enhanced driver's license
A Native American Tribal Photo ID
An airline or airport-issued ID (if issued under a TSA-approved security plan)
A Registered Traveler Card (that contains the following: Name; Date of Birth; Gender; Expiration date; and a Tamper-resistant feature)
A foreign government-issued passport
Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) card
Citizens of countries other than the US or Canada are NOT required to carry their passports if they have documents issued by the U.S. government such as Permanent Resident Card. Those who do not should be carrying their passports while visiting the U.S.

The name on the ID must match the name in the reservation.

Infants/Lap Child

Customers traveling with an infant as a lap child may be asked for proof of age, such as a passport, birth certificate (copies are acceptable for domestic travel) or an immunization record when the infant's age is questionable.

Infants between three and 14 days old must also have, in the form of a letter, their doctor's approval to travel.
Unaccompanied Minors

Unaccompanied minors must check in at the ticket counter. An unaccompanied minor does not need photo ID. However, the adult dropping them off and picking them up will need photo ID. This adult must be named in the reservation.

Have a great trip.

I have flown JB a few times mostly from JFK, MCO, TPA and SJU. The only time I was ever asked for a certificate was 1 time at SJU so I would not worry

Agreed, i have over 18 flights with jetblue and never once was i asked for any form of I.d. for our little one.

Also you could just go get a new copy of the birth certificate.

This is a good idea anyway. There will be times throughout the years were you will need certified copies of the birth certificate, it is wise to have multiple copies, in multiple safe locations. When each of my kids were born (17 and 14 years ago) I ordered 4 copies of each bc, one is at home, 2 in the bank safe deposit, one with a relative who lives in another state. Maybe over kill, but think of all the people after Katrina that had everything destroyed.

You should also be able to get a certified copy of their birth certificate from the town or city hall where they were born. I know I had to do that for myself when I applied for a passport.

I always make sure I bring my kids Drivers' Licenses for ID, for our 10 yr old and 12 yr old :rolleyes1

Seriously, I have never needed any ID for children. Then again, I am redheaded and so are both of them, so there's no mistaking the kinship. You should not need any sort of ID for kids for domestic air travel.
