AT what point are the tv's activated? Can teh kids watch cartoons while we are waiting to take off? Or are they part of the approved electronic devices and will be turned on once the pilot gives the go ahead?

Also, about the ear phones, how much are they, are they at all comfortable? I dont own any, would I be better picking up a pair from the local store?

The TVs do work once you board the plane but get interrupted at times during takeoff procedures. They were great though to keep my kids occupied for most of the flight. I don't recall what we paid for headphones but I don't recall it being outrageous.

Bring your own headphones if you have them. We used my son's ipod headphones on one trip. We were also on one trip where the plane was full and the whole left side (us) didn't have TV. We liked Jet Blue for the TV and out of our last 4 flights with them, we had TV issues twice.

Play its safe and bring a DVD player or a hand held video game (with headphones) just in case. Don't rely on that TV

They usually turn them on almost when boarding begins. Each flight will be slightly different according to the crew you have, but yes, you will have them on before you get in the air. As the other pp mentioned bring your own headphones or get them prior to boarding at the gate ($1) so you can use them at that time. They won't begin to sell them on the flight until you are in the air. Also, as mentioned, they will interrupt to give instructions for the flight.

I seem to recall that while you are waiting for the plane to take off, some channels work and some don't. If your channel goes off, that doesn't mean that all channels have gone off.

Sometimes there is a bin of headphones at the gate, and sometimes not. Sometimes the person who checks your boarding pass (right before you get on the plane) will have headphones, and sometimes not.

If you want to buy headphones or anything else on the plane, you have to use a credit card.

For me the TV service is hit or miss before take off. Sometimes it works, sometimes you seem to be stuck on one station and can't switch. They do interrupt whenever they make announcements and sometimes this switches you back to the default station and you have to find where you were. Once the flight is underway most of the problems seem to go away. Once my dd's TV wouldn't work at all and my mom switched seats with her since she wasn't watching it anyway.
