I preferred the ST but as it happens in a lot of these cases, whichever one I was familiar with first is usually my favorite. I saw the movie and LOVED it and the ST album both, and that prompted me to buy the original recording which I loved but preferred the ST more. I haven't really cared for any of the subsequent recordings that have come out over the years.

Yes, I was originally hesitant and leery about watching this. This musical seems to have two different kinds of staging, from the 4shows I've seen. One, where they "recreate" the story as it happened in the past, with only a few references to the present. A second one, where they make it clear it's the present and they are "retelling" the story. The first time I saw it, it was a college production and they did the "recreation," a full out production with original period costumes. So naturally, I prefer that version.


So far, this production seems to have melded the two different styles for this "concert."

Ugh, I'm not loving it so far. All the different camera angles, it doesn't feel like I'm watching a stage production. I like John Legend, however this role doesn't seem to do anything for him, as an actor, IMO. I was just expecting a different show (I have seen this production live). The singing is good.

I actually like it with the way they are doing cameras. I HATED the Sound Of Music, when they did it. It was shot like someone from the 10th row of the audience shot the show with his cell phone camera, showing it's a live stage production.

I like the closeups, moving in & out with this production. I'm watching it on TV not in their audience, so I'd prefer to see it the way I usually watch stuff on TV, rather than having the sense I so far back in the audience.

Lesson for future producers of live-for-TV musicals: It really does make a difference when you cast actual SINGERS instead of TV personalities.

I think this is the first of these extravaganzas that I've really enjoyed.

Whew! Pilate can sing. I was worried they had cast a "Russell Crowe" in the part.

But, what the heck is his costume? I hate it.

I guess I'm just not used to it nor was I expecting it. I did like the scene that just took place so maybe I'm getting used to it. I hope Jesus changes out of his pj's and bathrobe soon though. lol . Ugh!

Although I cannot believe a certain group of my relatives are refusing to watch because John Legend doesn't resemble the white bearded guy in pictures.

Neither do I, but I'm just not enjoying it either. The performers etc. are top notch but I suppose I'm not all that interested in the subject matter.

I get what you mean. John Legend has a fantastic voice and is singing the heck out of the role. But, IMO, he's missing some indefinable quality, some "otherworldly-ness" that I think of Jesus having. I could very well be unfairly filtering it through the past shows I've seen. Ted Neely, in the movie, was fabulous at having that quality. John Legend seems "edgier." I guess I don't think of Jesus as being "edgy" even in his day.

Sara's voice is gorgeous, it made me cry and I'm loving the man who is playing Judas.
