Jesus and the Cross

You know, if Jesus came back to earth, do you really think he'd be happy with everyone displaying a model of the thing that he was tortured and eventually killed on?

Just a thought...

Rich::

I'm not thinking he'd have any problem with the cross. The Christmas tree might be another story;)

We humans have a sad history of forgetting unspeakable assaults on humanity. Witness today's rising anti-Semitism as an example. I don't think a stark reminder of Jesus's sacrifice is a bad thing. I think we could use a few more stark reminders. We should never turn away from one's suffering because it's too painful to watch.

Ok, before I ask this, let me just say that I'm Catholic, and I much prefer the cross over the crucifix.

Question:

If Jesus went through all this today, and he was electrocuted instead of crucified, would we wear electric chairs around our necks?

Perhaps we would. Perhaps that's why he went through it when he did.

I think the use of the cross would rank down about number 1,000,000 on the the list of things we do that disturb Him.

ITA!! I think if we were living our lives more to his example and teachings then the cross would not bother him what so ever.

Also depends on what you see when you look at the cross. When I see one I don't see his horrible death, I see that he died to save my soul and that he was doing what his father asked of him.

I also think the gross commercialism of Christmas would probably bother him a lot more than a cross.

I highly recommend the book Constantine's Sword, by James P. Carroll, and his discussion about Constantine's introduction of the symbolic cross as Christianity's focus shifting from Jesus's life to his death.

Great book.

I think Jesus would want people to focus more on his life -- how he lived and how he treated others, rather than his death. JMHO.

Without His death the life wouldn't have mattered.

Jesus wouldn't mind the cross imagery (the empty cross, I think - never liked the ones showing Him on it - the whole point is that He is no longer on it and no longer in the grave) because He is not a self-centered human like we are.

When Jesus comes back, I don't think he'll have any problem with it.

I don't think He'd care either way but I'm sure He'd want us to consider His sacrifice though and be thankful for it.

I think a lot of people would be very disappointed if he spent his time expressing his displeasure over our use of the cross. Besides, it wasn't the cross that killed him, it was human beings. Wouldn't you think he would spend his time talking about more significant things?

new rule.

Hmmm, you are certainly living up to your third tag!

but to answer your question, yes, I think he would be very happy, because we turned a symbol of terror and torture that the Romans used as a punshment, to one of a symbol of resolve, sacrifice, strength of purpose and commitment, and love.
