Jessa Duggar (of the Duggar Family) is courting

Because like everything on the Dis, a side issue grew bigger and bigger?

Do we know why anything, ever, becomes a big deal here?

And yes, the skirts have gotten shorter and more and more makeup is being used. Maybe they're not so modest after all. Of course, IMO, announcing your pregnancies on national tv is not exactly "modest." Nor, is pointing to your new bed on said tv show and saying to one's wife "lets try for number 17." But that's just me.

I think she was referring to the size of the picture!

And, I have to agree, that comment about the bed does not strike me as modest. :rotfl:

My darling niece when she was about 3 years old stripped down in the aisle of penney's to try on a little sundress to see if it was modest. :) lol shed swim nekkid in the kiddie pool too. Lol, modesty was all about clothes.

EtA. That sweet story brought to you compliments of Vicodin...lol, can't remember the point I was going to make...

Looking at the photo, the feet on the girls don't seem very modest.

What if a man had a foot fetish??

:rotfl2:

When I see their feet I am reminded of when they went hiking up a mountain in South America (i think) with flip flops on. Crazy.

I don't think their dresses are strange although sometimes a well fitting (not to tight) pair of pants is more modest in some situations like windy days :rotfl:

But I do wish those girls would wear shoes. Flip-flops all the time are not doing their feet any good.

Flip Flops are definitely a "normal" teen thing.

Well, it is one small step up from keeping the barefoot.

If you wore that long skirt from the 70's today you would stand out. That's the point the poster made -- the Duggar girls stand out in a crowd but the men blend in.

I saw a family once at WDW, on a sweltering Orlando summer day, where the mom and 4 girls all were wearing long denim skirts and long sleeve shirts with Disney t-shirts over the long sleeve shirts. Dad wore chinos and a short-sleeved polo shirt. The girls were all around age 13 and younger. What kind of oppressive religion would not let a young girl display her forearms?

And yes, when I see the women in the hot florida sun wearing burkas I do cringe. I would not however, advocating passing a law/constitutional amendment to prevent them from dressing as they see fit.

Just remember that many people who dress in very modest clothing has been doing so a very long time and are used to wearing that much clothing in a variety of temperatures. They have adjusted to this :)

I have many Amish and Mennonite people where I live, so the dress doesn't stand out. With 2 amusements parks nearby (and many attractions), I am also used very conservative Jews in their form of modest/religious dress. It actually seems very normal to me

Almost everything you have written here is false. The girls, as well as the boys, are encouraged to follow their dreams. The whole family has traveled the world, the older girls are first responders, as well as one training to be a midwife, and one a dula. One of the girls wants to be a teacher. I have no idea where you people get your info from, but it is unbelievable how you all go on spreading your untruths!

Directly from thier own mouths. They have said over and over that women shouldn't work outside the home. The girls are not actual first responders. They were allowed to take the training but don't go on actual calls. They would be out without supervision which is unacceptable in thier opinion. The midwife and dula training is not and will never be a career. it is only to support thier mission work. You are fooling youself if you think any of those girls will EVER be allowed to hold down a real job of any kind. They are in thier 20's and it hasn't happened yet, even though they have the training. Their only option is marriage and maybe being allowed to help out with the family business when not popping out babies.

Yes, but my point was the girls clothes were (not so much anymore) more apt to stick out, whereas the boys wore jeans and polo shirts and did not stick out in any way.

With Amish/Mennonite people and Orthodox Jews, the men also wear clothing that distinguishes them as being part of that religion.

And I think most people who visit Disney World in the summer are not accustomed to the heat and humidity of Orlando.

I don't think closed-minded, hateful, intolerant children are any better for our society than spoiled, self centred, entitled children. The Duggar's may not be raising the latter, but they sure seem to be doing a great job of raising the former. (If Josh is any indication of their parenting.)

Amen. IMO, what Josh is involved in is hurtful to our society. And of course he got these views from his parents. Isn't that part of what people love so much about Jimbob and Michelle -- that they've raised their army of children to hold hold their same "values"?

If Josh puts himself out there as the spokesperson for one of the most hate mongering groups, then he is putting himself out there to be judged.

I don't have a problem with people who believe marriage is one man, one woman. I don't like that viewpoint, but it is their right to have it and I respect that.

However, when one becomes actively involved in an organization that judges people, making horrible accusations that have no basis in truth, and actively working to prevent basic equal rights for a portion of our country, then yes, they can be judged as intolerant and judgmental.

And I have no problem being the kettle on that one.

Seriously? Are you going to sit back and nit pick at everything a family does differently than yours? I'm sure they could do the same to yours (especially as a "cheer mom").

Their kids are hard working, dependable, have integrity, and are bright. Isn't that what we ALL want for our kids? I'm sure it is. The choices that they make are the best for their family. Obviously they choose to put their lives on display by being on TV. I bet if you did the same, people would find may things to criticize you about.

I'd rather have this world be FILLED with Duggars versus entitled, snotty, whiny, and bratty kids. Unfortunately I see the latter all too often.

I guess I just don't see the issue. :confused3

A world filled with Duggars....that's a scary thought

I'm a little taken aback at how you didn't even mention the blanket technique. I mean....that's a form of child abuse. Kids are all probably afraid they'll get that if they step out of line.

And....have you watched the show? Most of those kids are NOT "well behaved". The older kids seem like it, but then again the parents had to raise them, couldn't pawn them off on older siblings.

The younger kids are pretty bratty. I mean, just watch the episodes where they were in China and Japan. The dirty looks and things they said about the cultures lifestyle and food...I know "non-Duggar-like" kids who wouldn't even act that way.

Also, if any of the older children DO start acting out, they send them to "re-programming" camp. A few of the older girls have gone a few times.

I completely agree!

Some of the things he's said....its just disgusting. The "short bus" comment he made on his instagram showed his true colors.

Short bus comment? That's what some are calling good behavior and integrity?
