TLC aired a special on the Bates a year or so ago and they showed it on some of the footage. plus they put photos up on their website, they've since been taken down of course.

I have seen what you are referencing since I have followed them for years. I still don't think they're racists. How many southerners do you know that have a confederate flag? I think the room was just decorated as a southern room without thought. Heck, I did not know who Nathan Bedford Forrest was until all that drama. We weren't taught it in school. The Southern re-enactors I know who are all into the Rebel romance of it all (I don't get it, but whatever) and have pictures of Southern generals up don't have a picture of Forrest. They'll have pictures of Lee, Stonewall Jackson and Johnston up, but not Forrest, nor are there pictures of Bloody Bill Anderson or William Quantrill. There are just some names from that war that carry a special connotation.

Having a picture of Forrest up, in a frame? It sends a very clear message about what that family is about.

I was just reading up on him myself as I did not know who he was. From my reading he played a very important role in the Civil War and understanding him from a academic level is vital to understanding the Civil War (obviously, my full education on that is lacking). Even so, I am not sure why anyone would want to honor such a violent man. Maybe the Bates are decedents?

I don't have pictures of any southern generals in my home or a confederate flag but I don't think a southern family having pictures (and aren't these drawings?) of them necessarily makes them racist. They could be something that was handed down in their family. I have seen families that displayed things like that for that reason.

My bil bought a painting of one from an estate sale. No clue which one it is. But it was something the family had for a very long time. He isn't racist.

And I knew an old lady down that I visited once that had a beautiful painting of herself hanging in her living room. She started telling me about the history of the frame. Apparently it came from Germany and had hung in Hitler's home. She was not German but it came from some family member that was in Germany and passed down to her. Not something I would have but didn't make me think any different of her. To her it was a part of history.

It has to do with religion so this may be deleted, but it is because of a verse in the bible (Deuteronomy) that says a woman should not wear a man's garment and a man should not wear a woman's garment. I think that's about all I can say without getting points....

I don't care how historic something might be, or if it had been in the family. I'd keep it in a box, or I'd donate to an historic museum, not hang it in my house. To me, hanging a picture of someone in my home is a place of honor, love, respect or admiration. I wouldn't hang a picture of a murderous racist, no matter where it came from. And you bet I'm going to form an opinion about someone who would, and not a very good one.

I don't see how a you can compare a frame and to a portrait (and what difference does it make if they are drawings?). There are plenty of historic memorabilia to chose from, why pick someone who was a clan member?

It is currency, nor a portrait which I chose to display in my home.
