Jersey girls don't pump gas

Interesting!Brilliant observation. Let's just get rid of garbage collectors too! :

There has been an evolution in garbage collecting also. Old trucks required 3 people-driver and two men-one to get cans from left-one from right. Stopping traffic as they cross street.

As more and more homes and population increases-each of these 3 men now run their own truck.

Newer garbage collection trucks have only a driver- automated arm grabs our special cans-lifts and turns it over.

Its called progress and moving forward.
Change is a scary thing, I guess for New Jersey.
;)

The garbage collectors who come thru my neighborhood have 2-3 men on the truck every time.
one drives the other 1 or 2 do the buckets. its an automated arm, but someone has to set up the bucket.
it would take twice as long if the driver had to get out to do it each and every time.

Now the person who owns the gas station-owns several. He hires one hourly employee per shift to see all the food items inside and for peopel paying $$ for gas. Many women have this job.

One of the newest gas stationsin my area is really fancy=there is a TELEVISION at every pump to keep you entertained!:)

Wow, that would be awesome! Instead of all of the mom and pop deli's and corner stores, we could have a bunch of chains! Instead of that homemade taylor ham, and and cheese on a hard roll, we could have one that was manufactored months ago, frozen, and then reheated at a store akin to Wawa. Yum - gas station coffee!

:lmao:

One gas station I go to(self serve) has a grocery &butcher shop and is packed with folks getting old time cooked plate lunches. there's a huge range in what's available at gas stations here.

We have a 9.3% unemployment rate, in a state with the 2nd highest COL in the country. Most stations here are attached to service stations - that's where the money is, not the gas. Many of the service stations have actually eliminated the gas portion of their business. The gas station owners want full serve. The residents want full serve. The only people who are against it are people in other states, who will probably never even go to NJ. :confused3
Honestly, you are really making a good argument for why the law should be repealed.

If what you say is true; that all gas station owners and all residents want to have full-serv stations; then this law is completely unnecessary. Doing away with the law would not change anything.

Do people tip the guy who pumps their gas?

Really? People get out of their cars? Possibly in high heels and in 10 degree weather? ;) I thought you couldn't do that in Jersey! ;)

But seriously, I don't know anyone who goes into those stores and buys that nasty food. A Coke or a candy bar once in a while, sure, but there is very little in the way of frozen burritos or sandwiches.

We have yummy deli's and fast, home-cooked food here, too. It's just not attached to gas stations, and I don't see any reason that I'd want it to be.

A lot of the gas pumpers here are kids going to college. They pump during their off hours usually at night. It works out because their are retirees working during the day and the college kids at night. I would hate to take this away from them. I go to a gas station attached to WaWa down here (convenience store) and they are all really nice and I have gotten to know a lot of their names and we have conversations while waiting for the pumping to complete. Could I do my own, of course, no qualms about it. Now before anyone gets upset about the being retired or whatever, I live in a rural area. It's a nice place with nice pumps. The guys say they love it. It gets them out of the house, a couple extra dollars in their pockets, and a chance to talk to people. I know this because I ask them - why do you do this and that is what they say. The college kids like being able to do classes in the day and work at night. It works for them. Ha, they even decorated one of the guys booths when he graduated. :) I guess it's all the way you look at it.

Oh, and some of the guys I work with have it down to a science, they are getting filled up and have the moment to grab their coffee, when they come back 2 things accomplished. On the rare occasion I have done this I have left my car unlocked. No worries, the guys and girls, are there when they are attending it. It helps that I get them a hot chocolate or coffee while I am in there sometimes ;) There isn't anyone here walking through the pump area just meandering around, because everyone pulls up. This isn't a bad thing guys, it just the way it's done here.

I still don't understand what the big deal is... :confused3 When in Rome do as the Romans do... I pump when I am outside of NJ and when I am in I don't. No biggie...

Hope everyone has a great day and doesn't have to pump where ever you may be. :)

Not scary at all... G-Men were replaced with the one armed bandit in the town where I work. Each house was given one bin, one recycling bin, and that's all. No matter home many people in the family. If you need another bin, you must pay for it ($125) and the extra pickup charge. If it is an item you can't put into the bin you have to go to city hall, pay for a tag, and then it will be picked up. No tag and you get a fine. It ripped people who live there because of the fees and things. The tax rates didn't go down of course, but the fees were a whole new concept.
Most of the Mom & Pop disposal trucks are now out of business because of it. :sad1: But then again I live in the sticks so perhaps this is the norm everywhere else.
Change is good but when it hits people's pocketbooks or their families it does have a bit of a bite.

I have a special can.

Now no way did I imagine myself saying that today!

Town over has special cans... I, alas, do not have special cans.... :rotfl2:

But all of our cans are special in their own happy way. :) LOL :)

Everyone in my county does-we all use Waste management

Here's a pic of it-actually called a 'cart". everone was issued the 64 gallon one-more than enough for a typical family-twice weekly collection.

Wow - we own 3 of those, and fill them up twice a week! Glad we still have the regulation mob-owned trash companies that pick up anything and everything, free of charge! :cool1:

Thanks for picking up the slack on this thread, mjkacmom! I've been so busy at work, it's hard to find the time to fight for the honor of my state and our right to have our gas pumped for us by experienced gas pumpers.

Mare! Once a Jersey girl, always one, huh?

Belle, believe it or not, even in a state as backwards as NJ, many towns do use those automated trash cans. I'm pretty sure they're used in most of the central and all of the southern counties, but up here in the northern part of the state, well...see mjkacmom's posts for why we don't...yet anyway. They did let Sonic and Target open up around here, so maybe fancy trash collecting equipment is on the way soon. :)

Jersey Girls have special cans!

I think we found a new State slogan-Jersey- where we can all sit on our fancy cans at the Gas station.
