Jersey girls don't pump gas

I live on Long Island, and in my township it is illegal to pump your own gas. I didn't learn how to pump gas until I was stuck in the city once and had to get gas. Luckily I was across the street from my dads fire house, and he just came over and taught me. Once I learned, I was fine with it. I went to school in CT so I had to pump my own gas for 4 years. Yes, it sucks in the cold, but I did it. In heels, stockings, and dresses too!

While I almost never pump my own gas now that I am home, I know how. If we leave my township and go somewhere else on the island, one of my guy friends will pump it for me.

Wow, very interesting thread...

I'm not a girl and never lived in New Jersey, but I work for a company that deals with gas stations, so I know about these laws.

I'm curious that if I was in NJ or Oregon and I began pumping my own gas, would they have to call the police if I refused to stop? Seems a bit crazy.

I am of the belief that everyone should learn how to pump their own gas, but then again I'm also of the belief that everyone should learn how to drive a manual transmission car, but that's a lost cause in this country.

I can pump my own gas (when necessary), and drive a stick. I was not allowed to learn how to drive unless it was on a manual transmission. In fact, I just lived in Ireland for 5 months, drove a stick, on the wrong side of the car, and the wrong side of the road, up 1 lane mountains. I can also take out the trash, vacuum, cook, clean, grill, fish, drive & trailer a boat, and a multitude of other activities. (not trying to be rude, which I know is how this sounds, just saying...i'm a girl of many talents!)

I've never pumped gas in my entire life and I never will, God willing.

Sorry, guys, it's a Jersey girl's dream come true not to pump gas. I never have to worry about dirty hands, freezing cold, splashing by accident, wandering over to the store to pay for the gas, etc., etc. I can fill the car up and not worry about odd amounts. I pull up, order what I want, hand over a credit card or cash, and drive away.

.

For all you high heel and stocking wearing jersey Girls-the Modern day pumps, which apparently Jersey doesn't have, -you swipe your card at the pump=I NEVER go inside a store-ever.
And I've never had gas spilled on my hands either

:laughing::sad2:

Out of the 30 years that I had gas pumped for me in NJ I never had to wait long for an attendant. My CC number was never stolen when I gave them the card to swipe, my gas cap was always put on right and I never had gas splashed on my car.

I will never forget the lst. time I drove out of state without DH - yes I looked like a dork reading the gas pump since that was the lst. time I had to do it.

For what I have paid in real estate taxes in NJ I think it was the least to get my gas pumped for me!

I don't understand why some people don't like someone touching their car - don't you ever take it to a mechanic or a car wash.

Thank you.

We elected this guy to fix the problem of unbelievably high property taxes. We pay more in a quarter than many Americans pay in an entire year. His first great idea? Pump your own gas and save $.06 a gallon.

It's not a feminist issue---we can all learn to pump gas. Even men in suits or women in dresses. But why take away a good thing to save pennies? Most New Jerseyans never believed the price of gas would go down.

It is a Jersey thing

question:

How do states with only self serve accomodate drivers who use wheelchairs?

You New Jersey people are always whining about taxes--you fall pretty much in the middle of the country for overall tax burden when you figure in property tax, sales tax, income tax, etc.

You said you pay $6000/year in taxes on your home, what is the value of your home?

$6000 in NJ for taxes on your home is pretty reasonable. My taxes were about $5400 per year in Bergen Cty. which was consider low. My home was a 50 year old cape cod, not much property. We sold when the market was high but today it would probably be worth $330,000 maybe.

What was it worth when you lived there and paid the $5400 in taxes?

When we purchased it in 2001 we paid $270,00 the taxes were $5200. My DH uncle sold his house in 2006 for about $450,000 he had a split level house, not big at all on a busy street. His taxes were $12,000 per year.

When we were looking for a house one of the things we went by was the taxes per town. Each town is different when it comes to taxes.

I am from Oregon and we don't pump our own gas either. Truth is, I don't know how to pump gas... I asume it's easy but I still wouldn't bet my life on the fact that I could pump some gas.

I'm with OP, I would be pissed to pump my own gas. Plus, we'd lose a lot of jobs if the law was switched.

Also, in Oregon gas is not cheap. It's among the highest in the nation BUT that's a west coast thing. Out of Washington, Nevada, California, Hawaii and Alaska we're usually the cheapest also.

ETA: We also don't pay a sales tax... and I would be pissed if that was switched too especially since I'm not a saver.

And I always pay cash for my gas.....and I don't have to leave the warmth and comfort of my car.... ;)

You guys crack me up. Why can't I like not pumping gas? Why do I have to declare my independent spirit by grabbing a gas nozzle? In NJ I don't have to and I don't want to. Oh, and for the record, DH hates pumping gas also. I'm not sure what that makes him, but he's definitely not a Jersey girl..... :lmao:

:lmao: yes , I am quite sure that many jersey guys enjoy full service stations also.....

I think my sister lives in that same township--and she hates the fact that she can't pump her own gas. In fact, she will frequently fill up in my area since she can pump her own & pay less. I guess NY girls don't mind pumping their own gas so they can save a few pennies!

Haha... I feel ya, this is exactly what I would do, I'd have to read the directions.

And I've never had anything damaged or stolen, nor did I ever have to wait because of a "lazy" attendant. I also don't understand people not wanting their vehicle touched... they get touched all the time, even when the owner is not around. But that last comment you made reminded me of the people who get out to watch the attendant pump their gas, those people always seem really strange to me...

Cash/Debit card-whass the difff?:confused3

We have different rates for cash verses credit cards. No one I know uses a debit card for gas. And I'm assuming (and I don't really know....) that if you pay with cash you have to go into the store to square up. At least, that's been our experience.

BTW, many, many, many gas stations in NJ have no "stores" attached to them. Hess is the only brand I can think of that has added stores to all stations in my area.

Hi neighbor! I live in the same township. I love not having to pump my own gas.
Gas prices in this township aren't any higher than in neighboring towns where you have to pump your own.

Would it be cool to have full service gas pumped for me gratis?

ABSOLUTELY! I love getting pampered and no having to pump gas--well, yes that would be cool.

Using this as a political platform and advocacy groups getting their panties in a bunch at having the law repealed?

That just cracks me up. In 48 states, folks do it without a problem and even if there are folks who have limitations and issues, it isn't on any agenda that I have seen to move for having all stations go to full service.

But I do single issue voting at times and won't fault you your constitutional right to vote however you choose to for whatever reason you choose.

I just think it's funny that the incumbent lost b/c people don't want to pump their own gas.
