jeafl's MIL Christmas Guft thread 2010

My husband gave me baseball socks one year for Christmas.

Another year he gave me a pair of blue and white striped longjohns with a buttonable backflap so I could go potty.

We hadn't been married very long.

One year for Christmas my ex gave me a CD. Just one. That is all. I bought him a playstation, a bunch of games, a nice sweater, cologne etc. The worst part was that we both opened our gifts in front of my whole family (I thought my mom was going to clobber him, but I kept playing it off that it was totally cool and the CD was "exactly what I wanted"...it was not. No idea where he got the idea I wanted that). Well I guess he must've been embarassed because he started going on and on about how the "real" gift was coming at a later date.

The "real" gift? A mountain bike.

I don't know how to mountain bike. Have no DESIRE to mountain bike. Never asked for a mountain bike...but ex owned a BIKE SHOP that sold them, so he gifted me one of his free floor models!

For my college graduation he gave me a pair of sunglasses. Yep, you guessed it...he also sold sunglasses in his store. Free from the manufacturer for display.

My brother in law liked to entertain us with his eclectic Fraiser-style gifts. He once gave us a package of wild, long-grain gourmet rice.

My husband tends to buy me things sometimes because he wants them. I got a bread maker one year because he wanted me to make home made bread. I had no desire to do so.

Two years ago he bought me a new set of knives because he didn't like the set I had.

He put something in my stocking yesterday. I peeked today and it was a package of orange flavored Trident gum. Why on earth he would give me that flavor I haven't a clue. I don't like most orange flavored stuff.

He does good some years though. He is gift challenged for the most part.

Last year my MIL bought everyone else a christmas present... but me.

This happened to me one year. My MIL bought my 3 SILs beautiful Arthur Court oval baskets in the lovely grape design. The pattern that I just happened to collect. I couldn't help but notice that all 3 SILs received a basket. Everyone but me. I commented about what a beautiful gift that each received, thinking maybe mine wasn't under the tree or had been misplaced. MIL immediately says, "I could only find 3 of those and I knew YOU would understand if I didn't get you one." :confused3

I really hope she will post it. Though I'm not sure you could ever top the Cookie Monster sweater! :lmao:

Okay, I read the links (just the first post in each). These are hilarious and I don't get a bashing my MIL feeling at all. Please continue, please.

I'll share my gift-challenged aunt! She is the sweetest person you could ever meet, she just didn't have a lot of $$. Every year growing up, we would get the free combs, pens, calendars, etc. that are given away at your hairdressers or in parades or free gift-with-purchase items that arrive in the mail. Usually they were wrapped in regular white mailing envelopes. We would mock fight over the "best" gift on the way home from the party! And we always wondered what Christmas morning was like at their house, but there was no polite way to find out. :rolleyes1

OH, and I think the Cookie Monster sweater takes the prize! The Kitty-Cat Christmas Sweater gets second place.

Meow-y Christmas everyone!

I very much enjoy the threads to and I do hope she will come and post one this year after the get together.

PLEASE POST IT-I keep looking for it too. I think we can all vow to report any nasty posts to the Moderators so you don't have to deal with the nasties :thumbsup2.
I hope you are not serious? While I think it is absurd to read the threads as some sort of attack on her mother in law, I think it is really over the top to go "tattle" on someone who disagrees with that and posts their opinion. Just ignore it--don't take up the moderators' time with complaints about little comments you just don't agree with or like (gosh I only remember having ever reported blatant ads and one threads which had a link to a photo album which included homemade porn--differences of opinion I think are natural and expected and not anything to try to get anyone in trouble over).

 That would hurt my feelings. I am sorry.

 that is even worse--buying the PERFECT thing for you for everyone else and leaving you out. I'm sorry. You must have been really hurt.

I got this from DS15 when he was 6 or 7 or so. I am still not quite sure what it is supposed to be if it is just a Christmas decoration or a candy dish or what. They used to have a secret Santa shop in our old town where volunteers would take kids through their "store" and help them pick out and wrap presents for their parents. I LOVED to see what the kids got us each year. This was one of them:

Oh, I LOVE the idea of regifting it to him at his wedding eventually!

To keep the thread going, I'll share a few from my sisters mother (we say she is a different sisters mother to be funny. There are 4 of us and she drives all of us crazy.)

So - there was the year she gave my 12 year old DS knitted gloves. Not a bad gift except they were sized for a toddler.

Then there was the year my husband got knitted ties. We have been married over 20 years and he never wears a tie. The cats loved them.

Last year she gave DD11 and I shells. Broken, damaged shells that she got at a beach. Some still had smelly, dead animals in them. She said she saw them and thought of us. Um Gee thanks Mom.

I love her threads. They give me a chuckle and let me know I am not alone in the world of wierd gifts received.

ITA - it isn't Christmas without her. It has become a favorite tradition of mine.

It is a Christmas tradition for me too. I look forward to her thread each year! :thumbsup2

Well, that's a shame. JeaFL has always come across as a classy lady, not one to offend or derogate others. I never saw malice in what she posted about the gifts. I hope she'll post this year. :thumbsup2

::yes:: I never saw them as insulting. It was always in good fun.

olena, Thanks for finding and posting those other gift threads as well.

Does anyone have the orginal thread? The one where Jill received the hammer to carry in her car in case of an emergency?

TC:cool1:

The first year my husband and I were dating he gave me 2 presents- a pair of sapphire earrings and Corning Ware. Corning Ware? Gee honey, how romantic- NOT. He gave me camping gear another year and an ice cream maker. Huh? I hate the kitchen and roughing it is no room service. He went by the saying " Buy what you love." He's super sweet and so sincere. We've been together over 30 years so I've been able to look past his gift giving.

TC,
I posted all the threads I could find in a Poll thread on this topic. I thought I saw the hammer one, but I think I'm remembering seeing references to it.

One year when we were newly married my husband gave me a gift of gloves for Christmas. A pair of green plastic gloves that you would wear to clean the bathroom! I was :confused3 and he said 'I thought you would like them! They are from Williams Sonoma!" :upsidedow

I still have those gloves, and they make me laugh when I see them tucked in the linen closet (unused!). Luckily for me, his skills in the gift selecting department have greatly improved. :rotfl:
