jeafl's MIL Christmas Guft thread 2010

her MIL thread is as much a Christmas tradition for me as watching Christmas Vacation...and every year they make me laugh harder than the previous year!!!!

Shame on anyone that gives her a hard time.

ITA!! Looking forward to your Christmas gift post, Jeafl! Please don't deprive us of our Dis Christmas tradition. We really need the laughs! :thumbsup2 Your MIL gift thread is my very favorite of the entire year!!

O.K. Jill, I am guessing of some things your family might get this year...

For your dd who got the goose. Maybe a snuggie to keep her goose warm, like a goose snuggie?? She will be the envy of all her room mates!

And for your dd who got the bubble wrap, maybe some duct tape, to make the wrapping experience complete when she got tired of popping the bubbles

and for your ds, maybe some icy hot rub to go with the hot water bottle he got? Playing sports is tough on the body for sure!:)

Maybe your dh will get some vhs classics to watch

Hmm, maybe you might get one of those pot holder making kits. Just because they are fun!:)

And yes..the suspense is killing me!!:)

I  Jill - for her mother in law Christmas git threads and for some advice she gave me on a personal matter one time that changed my life. I really hope we hear from her this year!

How about if in the meantime, we share what odd gifts we've received over the years?

DH got a decoration. It was a metal pail filled with cement. In the cement was stuck a pole. At the top of the pole was a flat piece of wood cut out and painted to look like a child's drawing of a Denver Bronco's helmut.

We kept if for three years not knowing what we were supposed to do with it. It got damaged in a move.

I'll play along! My MIL does her shopping at the local thrift store (not that there's anything wrong with that!). Last Christmas, she bought my 10 year old son a box kite. It was obviously from the thrift store, as she didn't bother to remove the price sticker. DS took the kite out of the box, and first noticed that the string was all tangled. He spent hours untangling the string, and then realized it didn't matter, it was missing several key pieces.

I'm sure MIL thought that since it was a big present, it would be wonderful. We chuckled over it, and then my DS called and thanked her for it.

Please, Jill, post your story!! I look forward to it all year long! It makes me feel not so alone!

For me, it was her DH getting the "We All Die Alone" book, the roll of biblical coloring pages on a paper towel roll, the animal masks for her DS14 and the "Meowy Christmas" cat shirt.

OHHH the animal masks, made me giggle !!! So funny !

Count me in as anxiously awaiting the annual Christmas gift thread!!!

And odd gift.....one year my Oma brought my cousin and I sweaters from Germany ( she lived there for 6 months, and in the U.S. for 6 months ) and they were hideous. They were puffy and white, and had dark green and gold embroidery on them-the sleeves, the collar, and these "tassels" hanging off the front. Like HEAVY tassels. We were 16 and way too cool for these sweaters, and when my Mom and Aunt saw them, they kept saying, "Oh look how nice!" while trying not to laugh. Then one of them would mutter under their breath, "Why the hell are they so puffy??" It was like we were wearing the Michelin Man's clothes.

Of course we had to wear them to every family get together during the winter.

I'm just sitting here trying to imagine what Jeafl's conservative, CPA DH must look like sporting a gondolier shirt, beret, and spock ears, with fuzzy purple scarf! :rotfl:

Talk about a way to liven up a marriage!;)

TC:cool1:

The first year we were married, I got a recipe box from step-MIL. When I opened it, a gift tag fell out. Didn't have a clue who the To or From were. She had bought it at a yard sale. I was hurt. Over the last 15 yrs, I have learned that all of our gifts come from yard sales. One year, dh got a cast iron dog. He wasn't impressed.

Oh, her granddaughter's gifts don't come from yardsales-just the stepgrandkids. One year my son got a firetruck with one of the ladders missing, don't know what dd11 got (this was before the baby came along). Her granddaughter got piles of brand new gifts. Thankfully now we go over for lunch instead of breakfast, and her granddaughter (who she has custody of) opens her gifts before we get there. I completely understand her getting more, but my kids shouldn't have to witness it!

Odd gifts - DH's aunt used to be really cheap with the gifts. We would get AOL cds for Christmas in a birthday gift bag that was too small. And trial size suntan lotion that she got for free at the doctor's office.

She does so much better now - she loves my kids a ton and she gets them really nice clothes that they actually like!!

The first year we were engaged (I never got a gift as just a gf) MIL bought me a L shirt from Lane Bryant...I am a size 4/6 and had just completely my 3rd triathlon....

Our first year of dating I told my now DH that I wanted a Disney sweatshirt. Well he did get me one but in a size 2xl...I wore a medium! He told me that he remembered that I like to wear them big.:thumbsup2 I asked him if he wanted to jump in and wear it with me!! :lmao:

He has since got a lot better at gift giving!

one year my aunt got me a some mint green Snoopy footsie pjs. I was 15 at the time.
