JB canceled my flight tomorrow out of Syracuse

Thanks. I shall report back.
I realize my profile here still says NYC, but I moved about 2 years ago and am upstate now...and it still feels weird here to me. Not to mention the ultra convenience of being near 4 airports (JFK, LAG, EWR, and Westchester) is no longer (boo hoo hoo!!!).
I get it. We have access to Boston, BDL, JFK, LGA, not to mention Providence if we're really desperate. I love that our NE states are so small. But I have a good friend in Hornell and he loves upstate NY. It's a beautiful place. Best of luck to you, comrade.

oh, sorry. I shouldn't have mentioned it.
No no! You should've.
My initial reaction to this thing was to do nothing but I really really didn't want to get to MCO 33 hours later than I'd planned and have to fly to Boston first in order to do it, so DH found the Spirit flight and I jumped on it.

I promise to report back after I've spoken to JetBlue. I mean, they can't do squat about the Spirit flight, but I'm hoping they can cancel the outbound flight and refund me without having to canceling the entire thing.

When did you book your Spirit flight? I thought the rule was you had 24 hours to cancel any US flight & get a full refund.

That sucks, hopefully the rebooked flight goes smoothly.

I learned a bit ago to always book 2 one-way flights. Each one-way is so much easier to modify if needed. The round trip ticket doesn't offer any savings vs the two one-way flights, so there is no benefit to booking round trip.
The benefit of a round-trip ticket is that if something happens to the outbound flight and you cancel the tip totally, the airline refunds the inbound flight too.

Did you get anywhere with them or are you still on hold?
OMG. So I waited about 45 minutes on hold and then got a person. She seemed to be helpful. Canceled the outbound flight and told me how much the refund would be. And then I waited and waited and waited. She finally came back and told me that she's unable to issue a partial refund on her end and she has to contact another department! A department that she admitted she'd probably wait 15 or 20 minutes to get a hold of. So now I'm on hold again.

I should have just canceled the entire thing myself and rebooked the inbound flight. Even if it would've cost more than the cost of my original ticket minus the refund--even so, I would prefer that right now. I am completely whipped and I have to repack my bags, which is going to take more than 10 minutes.

I told the person at the JB phone line that at 10:30 my time (that's 10 minutes from now) if she couldn't get the other department on the line, that I wanted to just cancel the entire thing and I'll rebook the return flight. Either that, or I'll just stay at WDW forever!!!

Edited to update 10:27 pm: Now she tells me that the other department is working on it and it should be resolved soon.

Update 10:45 pm: The JB person told me that I'm getting the refund for the outbound flight, so I asked for email verification since I have no proof that this will be happening. I'm on hold again. I just hope to heck that I still have the inbound flight. It's still showing up on my JetBlue account . . . but . . . the refund is NOT showing up.

Final update (sort of) 10:55pm: I am getting a refund for the outbound flight. The inbound flight is still as it was. JetBlue will send me a written confirmation of the refund within 24 hours. The person I spoke with--she was extremely nice and helpful, btw--gave me a ticket # so that I will have some kind of proof of what happened other than my recollection of it.

The credit is not currently appearing on my JetBlue account page. I hope it'll be there soon. I'm also somewhat antsy about the inbound flight, but I have to do my repacking now!

Many many thanks to the other posters on this thread. You kept me going! Fingers crossed for the Spirit flight tomorrow. I haven't flown Spirit in eons.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. Wishing you smooth travels on your new flight.
Thank you!

I still have not received an email from JB with the refund amount and it's also not showing up on my cc, although it's early for that. On the JB site, my inbound flight is still there and the info is showing the total amount of the round-trip airfare, so I'm not confident that I really got a refund. I don't really want to pay for a flight I'm not taking but there's no way I'm going to be on the phone for nearly two hours again, especially not while I'm at WDW enjoying myself!

I’m sorry this happened to you! Always stressful when you have your plans all set and then something unexpected happens.

I hope you get your credit and your flights go perfectly.

Have a wonderful vacation!

OK. How bad is Spirit?
We have a regional airport about 10 minutes from our house. Spirit is the lone non-private airline to fly out of there and they have nonstop flights to MCO. For years, we've driven an hour + to Pittsburgh and flown Southwest just to avoid Spirit based on poor reviews. Well, we booked a very, very last minute trip over Memorial Day weekend and SW was stupid expensive at that point. We said, suck it up - how bad can Spirit be?

Well - it was totally fine! We didn't even spring for exit row seats, just had the regular ones. I have terrible knees and thought I'd be miserable but it was really ok. The only negative was you have to pay for drinks - even water and soft drinks, but we just bought bottles of water in the terminal. Also, the padding on the seats was slimmer than other airlines, but it was fine for a 2 hour flight. We all walked away saying we'd absolutely fly Spirit again if the price made sense. I realize you're probably on your Spirit flight by now, but thought I'd throw this out for anyone else. Would I fly them to CA? Probably not. But for a shorter flight, it got the job done with no complaints.

I think some of the hate against Spirit is subjective. For years I was told to avoid RyanAir and was told they are the Spirit of Europe. Well, I took an 80$ RT flight from Krakow to Prague last October on them and my experience was like yours. No problems whatsoever. It was of course no frills but what do you want for 80$. I'd fly them again in a heartbeat.

I can’t believe JB couldn’t get you on their direct flight from Buffalo at least.

Update 7/19:

(1) The Spirit flight from Rochester was totally fine. I bought an exit-row seat and a checked bag and WiFi. The plane left on time and landed early. So early that the gate wasn't ready for the plane yet and we sat there for about 10 minutes waiting.

The seat was fine, the flight was uneventful, and I'd have no problem booking Spirit again.

The WiFi? Not possible to access, so I got a refund. That was not easy but I somehow gathered the 7,000 details that Spirit wanted in order to refund me the $11.99. Hey, it's $11.99 I can spend in 2 seconds at WDW!

(2) As of this minute, I have still not received any written confirmation from JetBlue about my refund, no refund is showing up in my JB cc account, and the last time I looked on the JB site, my itinerary is listed as the return flight and the price is the cost of the entire round-trip fare. No minus anything.

Supposedly JB will write to me within 24 hours of my lengthy phone call to them last night, and the clock's ticking. I'm having a hard time believing that they're going to respond after East Coast business hours, but I hope I'm wrong. And I don't care if they ever write to me, just give me my money back!

But here I am at WDW at a beautiful pool-view room at AKL. Hurrah!
