Japan Pearl Strategies

Ok, am I the only goof-ball that would feel bad that I was ordering an oyster to be KILLED???? :confused3 Yes, I also never order a lobster ... can't be the one to say "KILL THAT ONE!" -- now this is NOT to say I wouldn't buy a pearl ring already made -- it's just, I did not point out one and say -- rip it open!!! ... yes, tell me I am being goofy ... I didn't mean to spoil your fun. It looks like the ugliest ones appear to have the prettiest hearts of gold ... I mean pearls.

I believe they breed them for the occassion...someone said they are in solution to preserve them...so I dont think we are killing them...think of them like deer...if we dont get the pearls then the oceans will be overcome with oysters...

In October I got a rare Peacock pearl at the kiosk at Blizzard Beach. The girl there said the strategy was to find the ugliest one you can in the pile... not a very big one either. They seem to produce the good size rare colored pearls.

I have to remember this!!! thank you...what does a peacock pearl look like???

I picked a pearl and had a ring made in '99. My pearl is around 6mm to 6.5mm. I didn't get a gong, but was told that my pearl was very nice and had a great color. It is very white with a faint pink sheen. Hubby wanted me to get a ring made. My ring mounting is 14K yellow gold with the pearl raised in the center. The gold swirls over the top and bottom with curls around 10 o'clock and 4 o'clock. A hole was drilled in the pearl and it was attached to the mounting by glueing it to a post. The band is moderately thin. The ring, including pearl was a little under $100. Silver mountings would cost less. It is a nice, simple ring and a great reminder of a wonderful trip. Sorry I don't know how to post pictures.

My pearl wasn't the largest, but we watched for a long while, and honestly, I think mine was one of the prettiest pearls opened while we waited.

I read somewhere that they're already dead, just preserved. Maybe you could ask before you choose to buy?

Thank you so much for this post. We will be celebrating my mom's 69th b-day on our next trip and aside from dinner with a special treat we didn't have a clue on what we should do. This is something she would love, and being able to do this with her grandchildren will make it even more special :)

How much time should we plan for something like this? We have lunch ADRs both trips in Epcot and was wondering if we should try to do this before or after.

DW and i have 4 pearls from trips over the years. can't say i ever thought about ordering the execution of an oyster...no more so than the execution of a chicken (wings), turkey (legs) or cow (burger).

maybe i'm sick, but all i could think of was "boy, a little hot sauce, some lemon, and that would be TASTY!!!" :thumbsup2

The oysters are already dead at Epcot. I know this because DD asked last year because she was worried she was killing it. They are preserved. Now.. that being said I do believe Sea World's are alive or at least they were. Iremember getting one years ago and its foot was moving around. I got a huge pink pearl out of it.

It's a neat color... looks like charcoal gray but shimmers with pinks, blues, purples. I love it. It's so interesting! Good Luck!! :thumbsup2
