January Trip???

Can anyone give me some advice about what a trip in late January might be like? DH and I are on the verge of booking a trip (for my birthday! :) ), but I have a few concerns that are keeping me from pulling the trigger.

I guess my biggest concern is the weather. DH and I (pre DD) took a trip to WDW in February and I remember it being colder than we expected, but I think we were okay wearing shorts. I see that the average high is around 72-74 degrees. Will we be able to swim???? Is it nice with the weather a little cooler??? Has anyone experienced a cold snap during a trip in January...how cold does it get during a cold snap???

My other concern is a little paranoid and goofy, but I'm concerned about germs. DD would be about 18 months old during our trip and because of a severe egg allergy has not had a flu shot. I guess that there is really nothing to ask about this...it's just an anxiety that is keeping me from making the call to CRO. I'm obsessive about washing her hands and still breastfeeding, but it seems like her hands are always in her mouth. I guess this is just something that you hope for the best about.

Thanks!

Hi. We've gone in January a few times. And it can be very unpredictable. Most of the time we wear pants and a short sleeve top under a light jacket. We have worn shorts some days but have found we needed to go back to the room to change before dinner. That worked out fine for us because we tried to go back to the room for naps anyway. So although my suitcase is not as light as it would be if I went in summer with only shorts in it, I much prefer going when it is cooler and a lot less crowds. My sister was so cold on one trip that she bought earmuffs to wear. She'll probably wear them this January as well. As far as temperature wise I'm not sure how cold it can get but I have been to Disney when there is frost on everything. That was on XMas day 1995.

As for germs, I worry too. You are doing awesome still breastfeeding!!!!! And I would just keep doing everything you are doing-washing hands, not letting her touch as much stuff as possible etc. I always seem to get sick on the plane. All that recycled air. I haven't found a way to avoid breathing on the plane yet though!! And I always double up on the echinacea and vitamin c before going, while we are there and after we get back!!

Have fun.

WE love January but it can be quite cool. The trips we have taken we always got colder weather in December than in January. Jeans and sweat shirts are pretty much what we wear. Swimming is not great. Pools are heated but it is quite cold on getting out. DS has always swam but he was 8 on our first winter trip. I do not think I would let a baby in the water that time of year. Germs are always a worry. Be sure that you and DH get your flu shots anyway. Dr told us that was the best protection when our DS could not get his shot. I might consider using a carrier for her in line to prevent touching all the hand rails, wipe down everything with a baby or anti-bacterial wipe. Keep on nursing, the BEST protection you can give her. Keep her well fed, hydrated, and rested. Try not to worry and have a blast. WE are planning for Jan 2007!!!

Wow! Frost in Orlando kind of scares me. We're looking at going either the week of January 21st or January 28th, so maybe we should lean more towards the week of the 28th to hopefully give us a little more luck with the weather. I think if the weather was even in the high 60's or low 70's that it would actually be pretty pleasant, but as I said, frost scares me. Definitely no swimming for DD if the air is cold.

I guess that we'll just have to hope for the best with the germs. Unfortunately, I can't have a flu shot either since I am still breastfeeding DD. We always bring a baby carrier with for lines which I agree helps. Actually, this is an advantage to going in January. Our toddler baby carrier (Babytrekker) has a lot more fabric than the Baby Bjorn, so I toughed it out with the Baby Bjorn during our September trip (even though DD was about 24 pounds at the time) since it was around 90 degrees. Won't have to worry about that in January!

Thanks!!!

I am going in Jan with a 9 month old who is addicted to the baby bjorn but it is killing my shoulders. Should I get a babytrekker? I have never heard of them....
Thanks!!

We are planning a trip for next January, 2007 (we actually just booked today!). I have never been there during that time, but I've heard from a few people that it's a great time to go.
About the germ/sickness thing.. you are giving your dd a huge immune boost just by breastfeeding. We don't do flu shots, either, but my dd is also still breastfeeding and really hasn't ever been sick (she only just turned one, though). I would bring those wet-ones, because they're anti-bacterial and they have those handy travel-size packages.
The baby carrier is a fantastic idea, too.. I use an adjustable fleece pouch from kangaroo korner that is very comfy. I love how people are less inclined to touch dd's hands when she's in the pouch, I think because she is closer to me and strangers are less likely to invade an adult's personal space.

The one week between Jan 21 and 28 will not make a difference. The entire winter in Orlando is completely unpredictable. You could have days near 80 with cool nights, or you could have mornings near freezing with afternoon highs in the 40s. There really is no way of knowing what weather you will get until a few days before you leave!

My point is, go with the week that is better for you. The last week of January could be a lot warmer than the week of the 21st, or the week of the 21st could be a lot warmer than the last week.

Sorry if this doesn't help you decide! I just wanted to clarify so you are not disappointed.

I agree with the previous poster, my husband and I have traveled to Disney each year for the past four (almost five with this upcoming trip!) years in a row. This year we will be there Jan 21-28th. Last year was the coldest, but I don't remember it ever freezing, I think the coldest it got was in the 40's. Of course when we were married in 2002 the high's where in the high 80's and guests where wearing shorts and t's, so its just hit or miss.

It is a wonderful time to go though, lines are usually short, and if you dress in layers you will be fine.

Thanks for all of the advise. As you can see from my signature, we have decided to go from January 21-30th (nine nights...woohoo!!!). Whatever the weather is, I'm sure that it will be much warmer than Chicago!

apfoster...I love my Babytrekker (www.babytrekker.com). My daughter is about 26 pounds and I barely feel like I am wearing her. You can use it as a front carrier or a back carrier. I found mine at a baby specialty store in Madison, WI (Happy Bambino) that carries a lot of baby carrier. We preferred the Bjorn style carriers over the sling type carriers and I needed to find something with a much higher weight limit. DD didn't walk until almost 15 months and still LOVES to be carried (one of her favorite words is "up!").

I also looked at the Sutemi, but found the Babytrekker to be more like the Bjorn and easier to use. The carrier that I wished I could have tried out is the Ergo carrier. The straps don't criss cross in the front when you use it as a back carrier and I've heard a lot of great things about it. They are all pretty pricey (around $100), so if you can find a baby store in your area that sells any of them, it would be worth a trip to try it out with your child.

Taking Airborne tablets really, really helps defy colds and such. A friend recommeded them to us and we pumped out kids before we went to disney with them every morning after breakfast (of course giving them the recommeded dosage). PLus, my husband travels on planes a lot and if he feels the slightest run down or on the verge of getting a cold, he takes a tablet twice a day for a day or two and feels great. I've actually gotten up in the am, felt like I was getting something ,taken an Airborne, and felt better at night. The should be at your local grocery store or pharmacy. The lemon lime taste the best. :sunny:

Let's hope for good weather!!!

I went this past Jan. and it was a little cold. If we had admitted it was cold and worn pants instead of shorts, we probably would have been OK. But we just couldn't bring ourselves to do it.

I'm planning on going again the end of Jan. and I too pray for warmer weather.
