January trip -- on-site necessary?

We're coming in January for a conference but we are tacking two days on at the end for our first visit to US/IOA. Plan is to go on a Wed/Thurs or Thurs/Fri. Our main goal is to see WWOHP. Is it necessary to stay on-site at that time of year? Rates aren't up for January, but it doesn't seem like much under $200 for a one night stay is possible. Is it worth the extra $100 for express pass and early entry? Would a partner hotel with early entry but no express pass be just as good?
Thanks for the feedback.

First couple of weeks of January were really packed this year. If you are visiting during that time, I recommend onsite. Otherwise, you should be fine offsite without express.

Just as an FYI in case you don't know, early entrance is only available if you stay onsite or book an offsite package through Universal.

A few days ago, there were no rooms available at any of the onsite resorts for the weekend of Jan. 13, so I'm thinking it's busy.

I'm pretty sure they just haven't released 2012 rates yet. From what I've read it looks like they will come out sometime in August.

Looks like the rack rates have been released only through Jan 8th because I was able to book Jan 5-8. Hoping for a discount!

We also were there the first week of January this year (after the holidays). Disney was delightfully empty - IOA was PACKED! I couldn't believe my eyes honestly, it looked not much different than our August trip! We were very happy to have the express pass. Beyond the express pass being so close to your hotel and taking a short walk to the parks is truly a wonderful option!
