January 2012 Car Rentals

We are looking as well...picking up a car in Tampa 1/6 and dropping off at mco on 1/15...

We're doing the same thing, but picking up at MCO and dropping off at TPA and our dates are Jan 20-28th and right now we have a full size reserved at Alamo for $246.85

(Just a heads up.. if you have an Entertainment book (2011) their car rental coupons are good through June 30th 2012!)

Add me to the list of those looking for good deals! My group will probably do either 2 cars or 1 minivan/lg SUV...whichever will be the better deal. I have one car reservation right now, but the rate is pretty high. I'm hopeful that as the coupon codes and deals are extended into 2012 we'll all see some savings.

I have been watching the prices closely over the last week or so - I have noticed they are definitely starting to drop! Originally I was getting $223 from Payless as the cheapest rate for my dates. But I just got a quote on Expedia for Payless Car Rental for 1/14-1/20 (not on site at the airport, but I understand that they are not far away) $153 for a midsize - their economy is at $145. The next cheapest quote is from Dollar for an economy at $314!!! Is it the airport taxes/fees that make it so much more expensive to rent from the agencies located inside the airport?

ETA: Is $153 a good rate? I haven't rented a car in ages....not sure if I should just bite the bullet and book it now or hold off and wait for a better rate?

Ok I just signed in on Payless' website with my Perks Club # and found a $10 off discount code 2CA64 and got the price down to $138 for the week...

Don't expect prices for January to drop until Jan 1st or so but when they do they will drop like a stone. I've rented an intermediate car in January for a week at least 10 years in a row and I think the most I ever paid is about $100. I have debated the Priceline loyalists on this board many many times and in the end I've always gotten the lower fare and they're locked in with a higher fare. January is still a long time away, relax.

I think they'll come down so I'm not worried just like to keep looking. Has anyone rented from either Advantage Rent A Car or E-Z Rent-A-Car? They have cheap rates right now but all the reviews I read are pretty bad? :scared1:

I second this! Mine never drops until right before Christmas - which is usually a small drop, and then the beginning of January it usually plummets. We usually do a week to 9 nights at the end of January and are usually between $90 and $145 total for an intermediate car to small SUV. Budget has been our rental company of choice for the last couple trips, but have used Alamo and National in the past as well.

I am very glad to hear this. I think DH and I will be renting a car for our trip Jan. 20-27. We will only need something small so I'm optimistic that we will be able to get a good rate. Thanks, everyone. :goodvibes

Hoping for Jan 29th-Feb 3rd. It's not necessary that we have a car, but would like one so that we can hit the outlets! :thumbsup2

Payless is giving me a rate of about $132 for the week of 1/14-1/20. However, when I put my $10 off coupon in, the price shoots up to $250!!

we are flying onto Long Beach two days prior to our MR cruise. There are 8 of us, so we need either a minivan or SUV. You think I'm fine waiting until January to book? (Our cruise is Jan 29th) I just don't want to wait then not get anything :)

I'm not really familiar with LB, we typically fly into LAX. I would make a reservation and then just keep checking it and rebook as the price drops.

Just reserved an economy car at Payless Car (not my favorite since you have to take a shuttle from the airport) for Jan 7th - Jan 14th for total including all fees and taxes for $129.14.

Did you use a code or something to get that rate?

Me too, lowest I've found is Payless for about $10 a day + taxes/fees for a econ or compact, don't know if it's going to get much lower than that

Did you book online for this price? That is a great price.

I have a full size car reserved for 1/8-15th with Alamo with a rate of $391.58 using a coupon from BJ's wholesale. I am hopeful that the price will come down between now and then.

Try Budget using BCD x474200 (travelocity public code) and E-Coupon MUGZ029 for $30 off. Total for fullsize is $266.99. A minivan is only $5.00 more by the way.
