January 2009. . . Calling all Snowbirds ~ Part V

Amazing video footage of the passengers standing on the wings of the plane in the water waiting for the rescue boats. It appears that all 148 passengers and crew members are accounted for with only minor injuries. They said that two birds flew into the engine shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia. The pilot made an attempt to land at a commercial airstrip in NJ across the river, but didn't quite make it and had to do an emergency water landing. CNN just reported that this pilot "did everything right" and saved lives. Hate hearing about plane crashes (especially right before traveling), but thankfully, all seem to be fine.

I hate flying, so this is the worst thing for me to be watching. However, I just can't seem to turn the channel. I always like to make sure everyone is ok. Glad that everyone is safe and sound. Who would have thought that birds could cause so much damage?

That is amazing that everyone is alright. :goodvibes

Still very scary 5 days before we are flying. :scared:

OMG! Is it totally irrational of me to want to cancel our US Airways flight and drive to Orlando? Plus I am terrified of being underwater, so that would do me in for sure!
I have a question I have always wanted answered, and now seems like a good time to ask--When they tell you to use the seat cushion for a flotation device---which cushion? The one you are sitting on? I never understood what they meant, I know, dumb...but especially now I feel the need to know!

Dancegrl I thought it was you that mentioned a site for penny machines? I looked back about 10 pages and couldn't find it :confused3 Do you know what it is?? Thanks

Not totally irrational! it would be the one you are sitting on.
You shouldn't worry too much if you're flying from AZ to Orlando there's not too much water involved.

When I was a kid we went on a class trip from MN to Chicago and a week AFTER we went there was a crash and I think it was the same flight we had taken. Needless to say, my mom said if it had been the week before, I would not have gone on that trip!
We should just think of the statistics that say these things don't happen very often - and since it just did, it won't happen to any of our flights.

Really, Home Depot? Like the paint color sample thingy's? Did you guys make this kind of the DIS'ers theme, or where did it come from? Just curious, cuz I looove the lime green! I want to go get one to put on my purse for my trip! Is it so we can recognize fellow dis boarders and say hello?

I actually already have some light pink ones, because I was going to paint the bedroom...and of course I was going to use the Disney paint!

True, true-not much water to cross flying out of Phoenix!
Good to know about the seat cushion though, I always thought they were saying use the one in front of you, and I was like "Huh?" It all makes sense now!

I forgot to tell you all...I'M DOING THE SINGLE DIGIT DANCE!!! :cool1: :dance3: :cheer2: :yay: :woohoo: :scared1:
Technically only 8 days until we leave, but 9 until we're at the World. And more importantly, only 4 1/2 work days left!!!

My DH is doing the single digit dance too - only 8 days until he leaves! I decided only to count when I get to WDW, so I'm at 11. My ticker is weird because it will say 10 days and 11 hours or something...Oh well! I have only three days left to work, but they will be BUSY! I lost a whole day today because of the kids' snow/cold day. I didn't have anything I could do at home. :(

WOW! Leave for 2 weeks and miss about 100 pages! OK, so I haven't read any of them since I wanted to give my "trip report" - I don't do full ones.

We left on January 3 and got to Pop Century at about 6 PM. Magical Express was great - we only waited about 20 minutes on the bus before it left. Checked into Pop Century with no problem - had the AP rate, and no one asked to see it! Which was good, because I was upgrading a 7 day hopper to an AP and didn't have it yet!

I did the upgrade without problem (thank you, ChesireFigment! :thanks:) and got the Tables in Wonderland card. We went to the Wave at the Contemporary for a drink & appetizers and then to the Poly bar for the same. When we went back to Pop, our bags were in the room - no issues.

Jan. 4, we took the bus to MK (which came first). Turned out that its route then changed to CSR, so we didn't even have to change busses! Checked into CSR again with no difficulty - didn't get a renovated room, but that's OK - we were in Casitas. Got the $200 gift card and upgraded my d's ticket to hoppers with it. Also had the tickets taken off my room key, since I had the AP. No difficulties, and everyone was pleasant and polite.

I never realized how much park hopping I'd want to do! The first day, D decided that we'd go to whichever park's bus came first. That was AK. Had fun there, crowds manageable. Hopped over to DHS in less than 15 minutes, did a couple of rides, had dinner at Sci-Fi, and saw the last night of the Osbourne Lights. Beautiful (and we did enjoy the one Jewish window in it!). After that, we went over to MK for EMH (again took about 15 minutes). Boy were we glad we did. It was the last night for the Castle lights. And we got a bonus! Splash Mountain was supposed to be closed for refurbishment, but because the crowds were greater than anticipated, they kept it open another day! D, who had been disappointed in the refurbishment, was thrilled!

The only disappointment of that day was that when we got back to our room, our bags hadn't been transferred from Pop to our room at CSR. It took about 30 minutes to get them, and it was already late.

The rest of the trip was fabulous. We were surprised about the crowds on Monday the 4th, but by the 5th the crowds were really manageable. Weather was perfect except for Wednesday when it rained and got cool, but the other days were in the high 70's to low 80's. Got a good afternoon at the pool one day, and spent all of Sunday before our 4:45 departure to the airport at the pool.

CSR was great, mousekeeping was wonderful. I didn't realize how different it was between Pop and CSR. At Pop, it's always loud and bright and go-go-go. CSR is calm and serene, and when you get off the bus, you just relax. The walk to El Centro was about 4-5 minutes, and was beautiful.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask away!

Oh, and no evidence of the dreaded norovirus! (I got sick when I got back, but it was my ear, which you may remember was blocked before I left, so it had nothing to do with the trip!) I wiped down the room with Clorox bleach wipes, but only once. We did use a lot of 62% alcohol sanitizers.

And thank you to all who suggested the Sudafed before flying. It worked beautifully!

Glad you had a fabulous trip!! Thanks for the info! We've been at Pop the last two times, but this time I bit the bullet and upgraded to CBR! I hope it has the same relaxing feel as CSR-sounds much more relaxing than Pop was, even though we loved Pop!

Welcome back Snykymom! :goodvibes  So glad to hear you had a great time! :thumbsup2 I see that you are "bouncing back" ? Was that a planned thing or did you decide while you were there? Did you enjoy CSR? The theming of that resort intrigues me although DH says He is not at all interested in trying that one! Again, welcome back! :)
