Janet and Justin-Did you See what I just Saw???

Just adding my .02 worth, but isn't it all about context?? I have no problem with women's anatomy. None whatsoever. However, a guy ripping part of any woman's clothing off is NOT entertaining.

I totally agree. I am very comfortable watching the movie "Titanic" with my DSs ages 15 and 12, including the scene where they show the young Rose posing nude for the artist Jack, who is sketching her. I think the human body is a beautiful thing and nothing to be ashamed of. It's ALL in the context. Same thing with a woman who is breastfeeding her baby. Not that I go out of my way to have my DSs view naked women, especially at their ages, but when it turns up occasionally in an appropriate context, I have no problem with that. My DSs do NOT watch MTV, they hate all that type of music. They like bands such as Barenaked Ladies (lol!), Creed, the Beatles, etc. We took DSs to their first concert, Barenaked Ladies, when they were ages 12 and 9.

Anyway, my point is, most of us parents do NOT object to the form of a naked woman's body, but it was the context in which it was presented, AND the lack of pre-warning. If it was a malfunction of a costume, then that's a shame for everyone involved, but you know what, obviously it WAS planned that he was going to grab at something or some part of her costume, which still is NOT appropriate, so they ended up getting burned when playing with fire. (These are MY opinions and as such, I won't defend by debating this with anyone, so save yourselves the trouble of arguing YOUR opinions, with me).

As for Kid Rock, he's just untalented and ridiculous anyway, and there's no excuse for what he did.

........It is so commonplace today that we just accept the nasty lyrics, uneducated language and everyday violence. No wonder the show 'Joan of Arcadia' is getting so popular!! Okay, I'm coming off the soapbox now.
Let me help you gently off, goofy4tink, you said it so well. I think this news editorial today says it pretty well also.....

And Preshi, yes, there is a standard of right and wrong....to go with your logic of "who's to say what's right or wrong" would mean that someone could think it was okay to rob/rape/kill ... after all, who's to say what's right or wrong? Puh-lease.

It's logic like that that truly frightens me and makes me fear for the future of my son.

Well said.

This thread probably needs to head on over to the DB and I'm surprised by that. How could anyone think that it's no big deal? That may be the most disturbing thing of all. It's not about the breast, it's the act of aggression or assault. If you can't see that, you must have watched a different 1/2 time show than I did.

Although I would have still thought it ridiculous and inappropriate for this time-slot and audience, I would have had far less issue if she had performed her entire "act" with a pasty on.

Accident? Come on, the line in the song goes "I'm gonna have you naked by the end of this song" and then - there he goes.

I also agree with a previous post that so little has been said about Kid Rocks use of the American flag. If a foreigner had worn our flag like that, there would have been more to say about it, I'm betting.

Our poor kids.... It really is just too bad for them.

Maybe it is because it is my generation or whatever but you do know that by expressing your disgust here you are doing exactly what they want you to do.
There are 9 pages talking about her boob. Have you walked down the street lately? There are boobs hanging out of shirts and asses hanging out of pants ALL over the place!!!
Your kids are gonna see it and whether you like it or not they could have already.
The world has changed from the innocent years before and you, just like your kids do, have to get used to it.
The standards are different and while some ofy ou may find some things (like award shows) trashy some of us actually enjoy aspects of them.
Also you shouldn't be complaining to CBS and the NFL because it was AOL, yes people the company you use possibly on a daily basis, that sponsored the show.

Sorry if this sounds *****y but it frustrates me that we have spent 9 pages on a BOOB!

Sorry, I don't "have to get used to it". So I should raise my children without any morals or not teach them the difference between right and wrong because it is what everyone else is doing? Not in my house.

Well, you certainly have a right to your opinion. Just as everyone else.

*I* don't think it's 9 pages on a BOOB. *I* think it's more commentary on the venue. *I* don't think young children should have to get used to seeing trashy "entertainment". *I* don't use AOL. And while AOL might have been their sponser, CBS had the right to deny it, as the superbowl is a venue that should be marketed to a much wider array of people. They dropped the ball IMO, big time.

Maybe the fact that 9 pages have been spent on it should tell your generation something.

Dan,
Thanks for the link to that editorial, I think it probably sums up the way a lot of people feel after last night.

I totally agree with all of those points! It totally looked like Justin was assaulting her.

I wasn't even paying attention to the lyrics of the song and it looked like it was on purpose. But apparently what many thought was a pasty was a nipple shield, which looks similar to a silver glitter pasty but is a fancy circular/star-shaped piercing that can look all sparkly under those lights. I saw some still shots this morning and it's definitely no pasty--it's a piercing. So I dunno--Janet might not have meant to flash us, but it sure looked like Justin did.

Maybe it's just crazy liberal young me...

Sorry, but I have to agree with Meagan. I don't understand the uproar, either. What you saw is no less skin then if you took your kid to the beach. I didn't think there was anything wrong with any lyrics, either. :D

What happened to the days when great bands like U2 would perform!!!!:teeth:
Before the whole boob insident I thought the half time show stunk!!! Janet was singing songs from the 80's, why was she there in the first place? Also all the songs the artists sang were old and played IMHO!! It was the worst half time show I've seen. Then this whole thing with Janet's boob. Most of the time Celebs resort to this kind of stunt when they are not selling too many records. I think Justin is very talented but he just wanted to get Britney back for her recent stunts! Did you see his face when she kissed Madonna? Not happy.
This actually bothers me more than "the kiss" on MTV. I expect that on MTV, not on the superbowl!!
I did see CBS' apology on the news.
Justin had a statement also stating he was sorry if people were offended.

I am 28yo and have 2 children, DS10mo, DD6yo. In no way do I think they or we just have to get use to these kind of publicity stunts, or just doing things for the shock factor. I will teach my children morals, values and self respect. I do expect to watch a ballgame with my family and not see what I saw. Yes every woman has a breast but I don't walk around with it exposed. If I think it's ok for my kids to see then let me make that choice, don't force it upon me like they did. My daughter didn't see "the kiss" because I know better than to let her watch MTV. Now I have to sensor ball games on CBS!!
JMHO!

I am not some trashy slut who goes around sleeping with every guy she can and using every drug and drinking and partying.
I will admit that some people are like that in my generation but please donj't generalize.
I am perfectly happy with how I was raised and you have a right to how you raise your children but our generation is different.
I think that people need to realize this and understand that some shows which use to be family appropriate aren't anymore.
Even some commercials aren't. I'm disgusted by some things my generation does but I am also able to accept that some venues aren't appropriate for children and when I'm home shows and movies i would normallyw atch at school I don't watch because of my siblings.
Times are changing and you can raise your children with morals I support that but gathering around the tv to watch sunday night shows doesn't happen anymore because of what's on tv.

I don't know either, but who wears a shirt that tears away that easily, that precisely, unless they intend for it to be torn away? They don't just make shirts like that, that was planned.

People are getting pretty judgemental.

It was a stupid stunt that should not have been done. It was in poor taste and they do have talent and this just wasn't neccessary for either of them.

My kids were busy playing and wasn't the least bit interested in the superbowl or the show.

I have to comment on the opinions that this was an "assault". I can't speak for everyone else, but from someone who has been assaulted, to compare this stunt with an assault is insulting.

I'm a good parent and the only thing that bothered me were the sub standard perfomances. The boob? No biggie. ;)
Seriously it was the worst half time performance I can remember. I think it's Janets fault, she was really bad. All I kept thinking was 'Michael with boobs'. Ew.

I agree that kids see this on the street. They can also see it on music videos, movies, etc. But it's my opinion that on network tv during prime-time it shouldn't happen. Do people with young children have to turn off the tv completely? Give me a break! This discussion is an example of how we are becoming desensitized to sex and violence in the media.

It's not the end of the world, but I don't have to like it.

I wondered why they had "has-been" Janet Jackson perform. Perhaps Beyonce and Jessica Simpson turned down this stunt. Congratulations to them if that is the case.

One thing that bothers me about all of the commercials, CBS refused to air an anti-Bush commercial that was very tastefully done, instead selling advertising spots making fun of old people and pushing male enhancement products. We can't be exposed to politics, but we can be forced to watch smut.

On the other hand, I enjoyed the Cadillac and AOL commercials.

Those of you who have young children, under 5 perhaps, will need to change your way of viewing these things before long. Or at least, I hope for your child's sake you do.

Our poor kids.... It really is just too bad for them.

This is VERY insulting! Who are you to imply that we will not be able to "properly" raise our children because we have different views than you? Give me a break!

I grew up watching MTV. Yes, my "terrible" parents allowed it. And you know what, I now go around wearing pointy bras and gyrating around like Madonna. Oh, and I also seek out Dr. Feelgood like the Motley Crue song! I was damaged for life!

Preshi and Minnesota- Maybe we should get together so we can damage our children together. After all, it takes a village.....

Don't have time to read the whole 10 pages - so forgive me if I'm repeating.

I thought the marching band at the beginning was the best part of the show! The only one of the other performers I've kind of enjoyed in the past was Janet Jackson and I thought she was nasty and tacky BEFORE the boob! About halfway through this show I looked at my husband and said, "Remember when Disney used to do the half-time shows??"

And they're trying to put a spin on this like that stunt at the end wasn't planned! Give me a break. If you're going to do that stuff then fess up to it. Don't act like a 2 year old with chocolate on their face swearing they don't know where the brownies went!

They should have done the pre-game as the half time IMO. I thought the Columbia tribute was very good - but very misplaced in the line up of events.
