Jan 5-10 Me, Myself & I - Perfectly Happy On Our Own!

Hey Anne - still here tagging along :goodvibes

Looks like a great day at DHS - bummer about the music at RnR - that really does make the ride 100 times better!!!!

Also, I totally agree with you regarding the Wishes Cruise - it was ok, but just not what I had expected.... Oh well, I guess I learned from my mistake....

Can't wait to read more!!

Hi Anne. I've been following along the whole time. Really enjoying your report. Gives me lots of confidence in my own future solo trip! Thanks. I'm gonna keep reading til the end!

Thanks, everyone for joining me! It's almost all done. Only one more installment after this one.

Done with Epcot for awhile and heading to Fort Wilderness to check it out for a future trip in our popup camper.

At 10:34, I got to the bus stop and there was only one other person in line for the Fort Wilderness bus. Not a good sign. Fifteen minutes later, the bus arrived. Sometimes 15 minutes seems like a very long time when it really isn’t. We made a stop at Wilderness lodge before being dropped off at the Outpost at Fort Wilderness.

I was struggling to remember how the bus system worked here at FW. Looking at the map at the Outpost just confused me more. I figured I should be waiting on a yellow internal bus to get me to the Meadow Trading Post so I could rent a bike for an hour. Well, I sat awhile and a bus didn’t come. I was beginning to think I had the wrong information. So I just decided to walk. Mind you, it’s at least a mile to walk to the Meadows Trading Post, but I did it anyway. I talked to my husband on the phone for most of the way. The walk was rather pleasant but not much to look at on the way. The sidewalks really help.

At 11:50, I get to the Meadows. It took me about 15 minutes, but I wasn’t walking very fast either. I’m not in much of a hurry. At the trading post I peruse the campground merchandise. I spot a cool tapestry throw that has Chip and Dale on it. Forty bucks. Ugh. I’ve bought enough, but I really would love this for the camper. I passed, but I did write down the SKU number just in case! I get my bike, sign my life away and give them my resort card to hold. Didn’t like that. The bikes are the old fashioned pedal-brake kind with no gears. I got to pick out the one I wanted from the little bike room there. They had a bunch of different sizes. I get my sea legs going (I don’t ride much) and I’m off. As I cross the bridge toward the main road, I see people in canoes in the waterways there and others fishing. I guess I just thought canoes would be on the open water of the lake. This looks like more fun. Another new thing to try next trip. My kids are great in canoes.

2008019and10032.jpg

One of the waterways near the Bike Barn. Fort Wilderness is really a beautiful place.

I headed out at noon to check out the camping loops. The 600 loop was jammed full of motor homes and there wasn’t much shade. Cross that one off my list. I had notes with me on each of the loops so I’m trying to look at that and steer the bike at the same time. Thank goodness there’s not much traffic on these roads this time of day. I tried to stick to the sidewalks. Many of the other loops were all motor homes as well, some were more shaded than others. I wasn’t sure I really wanted to be in a little popup in the middle of a bunch of motor homes. But I’ve read on the camping forum that everyone is just peachy about it. They all get along.

That’s one of the reasons we really want to be at the campgrounds at Fort Wilderness. In a hotel room, you don’t talk to your neighbors unless you just happen to see them outside the door or at the pool. You don’t spend time outside. You’re all cooped up in your little sanitary room with the TV. When you camp, you cook outdoors, you play, you relax in your own chairs and you meet your neighbors, especially in the evenings. It can become quite a party. I love to get invited into other peoples campsites to see how they’ve decorated inside and out. Camping people are a whole other breed. We love them.

So next I check out loop 1500. I’ve heard wonderful things about it. It’s not a full hookup site (meaning you can’t run your sewer line from your camper) but we really don’t need to do that anyway. The comfort station is close. This loop is close to everything… just a walk across the street to the trading post, the pool, volleyball and much more. And it’s almost all tents and popups here. This might be our place. Loop 2000 comes in a close second. I made one more loop around all of Fort Wilderness, took my notes on what I saw and took a few pictures of how some people set up their campsites. Many of them have one or more tent awnings on their sites as well as their “home”. It looks very comfortable.

At 12:45, I turn in my bike and go across the street to the small bus stop there. I wait awhile and no bus comes so I decide to hoof it again. It wasn’t so bad the first time. Of course, my bus passes me on the road about 5 minutes after I take off. At 1:08, I’m at the Outpost bus stop waiting to head back to Epcot. This time, it took awhile and I was starving. I resorted to vending machine food but I didn’t have enough change to get a Diet Coke. I can’t believe I’m at WDW and I’m eating crackers from a vending machine. This is sad.

At 1:15, a bus finally comes (ok, it was only 7 minutes, but it really felt a lot longer). As I ride back to Epcot, I contemplate my plans for the evening. I don't much care about sticking to them, so I’ll be winging it for the most part.

At 1:31, I got off the bus at Epcot and I want a burrito at Mexico. Why do they call them Wet Burritos? That’s just gross, although they taste really good. The name’s a turnoff. As I pass by Spaceship Earth, it’s open so I take advantage of it again. It’s the first of a couple of detours on my way to glorious food. Spaceship Earth crapped out on me twice while I was riding it so I didn’t get off until after 2pm. Got some pictures that way though.

2008019and10044.jpg

After SE, I went back to Innoventions for one more try at the Disney Visa meet and greet photo. There were two families in front of me. I’m not passing this up again. When I entered, Mickey, Pluto and Goofy were there along with one photographer and the greeter. They tried to have a little fun with me before we took pictures. I wasn’t really cooperating. I really didn’t expect this little problem… I felt very self-conscious being alone with three silent characters and a photographer. It was just weird, so I rushed through it very quickly. I blew my chance to get pictures with each character separately. You can have them take as many photos as you want and stay for an extended period of time. They don’t rush you out. I just rushed myself. Well, there’s always next time, right? I’m hungry.

Ok, as I’m passing through the breezeway, I come across those CMs at the carts selling those really big bouncy balls. Have you ever seen anyone actually BUY one of these monstrosities? What on earth would you do with it once you get it home. I can just see that thing in my son’s bedroom. It’s gotta be at least 4 feet in diameter.

2008019and10047.jpg

At 2:20, I slipped through Club Cool and refreshed myself with some VegiBeta. Yum. The only thing I don’t like about this place is that everything is always sticky. All those sweetened drinks, I assume. And all those people who spew out Beverly after the first taste.

As I’m heading into World Showcase, I see that two of the Christmas gateway light fixtures are still up. Those must be a bear to remove because it’s taking them a long time. I assume they have to bring in cranes for them. At 2:33, I finally sat down to my first real meal of the day. I gotta make up for lost time! I’ve got my burrito and my Diet Coke. I pick out a table along the iron fence so I can watch out over the lagoon. These seagulls are getting bolder. I swear a few stood on my table and got within 5 inches of my food. Sassy little buggers too. And loud.

As I’m leaving Cantina de San Angel, I spot a Dream Team person all by herself. She’s just wandering. I can’t figure out what she’s keeping an eye on. I figured it could be a particular bench, stand or just about anything, but she just kept wandering on down the path toward China. I dogged her for a little while but then I felt too much like a stalker and gave up. I won’t be getting any dreams come true this trip. So at 3:12, I sat and watched Mo’ Rockin’ for a bit. I waited for the belly dancer to come out—she’s one of my favorites. I sat through one dance and then made room for someone else on my front row bench.

2008019and10056.jpg

I decided to watch the Impressions de France show since it’s been quite awhile since I’ve seen it. Some poor schmuck came out complaining that he waited 25 minutes for a 15 minute show. Must be his first day. He obviously hasn’t experienced any of the E-ticket attractions yet. Poor guy.

I took a brief stop at the UK because I heard Off Kilter playing. You just can’t miss that music. Ok ladies… quick drool break:

2008019and10062.jpg

At 10 til 4, I headed toward the Epcot entrance. I literally stopped to smell the roses on the way. I took the rose garden path to the left. My son loves smelling roses and it made me think of him. They are very fragrant through here. At 4:10, I picked up my Disney Visa free 5x7 at the camera shop. Something free at Disney, you can’t beat that.

I was the only person in the line at the bus stop for Pop Century. Leaving in the middle of the day can be like that. They just don’t run the busses as often. But at 4:21, I’m on a bus back to my resort for a quick nap. When I arrived, I finally mapped out the shortest route from the bus stop to my room. Yeah, it took a few days but I can make it in exactly 5 minutes. And my room isn’t really that close to the front, it overlooks the lake in the back. I put in my earplugs, closed the curtains tight, set the alarm and snoozed almost two hours. Oh, that was nice. A little disoriented when I woke up, but I snapped back fast.

Hi Anne and WAR EAGLE!! I have enjoyed reading your solo trip report and have decided to stop lurking and join the fun before the finish. :surfweb:

Wow, that sundae looks scrumptious. I had the chocolate one but next time I'm doing the caramel!

You're not kidding. I can't get anything that good around here. It all tastes fake. Nothing like real ice cream, some butterscotch, some fudge and a breezy evening to enjoy it all in. I drool just thinking about it.

Still here too, popcorn::

We were at a wedding all weekend:hug: (fools), (best man duties for me) so nice to come back to some updates.

Your tour of MK looked and sounded interesting , something we discussed doing when we are shot of the kids when they are older and dont want to be seen with Mum and Dad on vacation.

Quality of your writing still top drawer stuff :thumbsup2 , keep it up.

Paul,

Thank you! I hope to keep my kids "disneyfied" at least until they're old enough to go on the tours with me. My daughter would probably do it, not sure about my son. So far I have been able to keep them indoctrinated into the Mousetrap.

Look at you crankin' out the updates now. :rotfl:

I'm following along, I just got caught up.

Hee, hee. Yeah I was out of it for a really long time, everyone forgot about me! I just spent a day catching up and I'm actually all done, just one more post to go.

I just wanted to come out of my "lurker-dom" to tell you that your trip report is great. I went on a solo trip last year and loved it. Although, I enjoy going with others, it's definately a different experience when solo.

I have also done the Keys to the Kingdom tour with Matthew. He is so great. When our tour was over, I felt as though I could have gone on for another 4 hours. It went by so fast and Matthew was so fascinating. I have considered doing this tour again.

As for the Wishes cruise, I have not been on this particular cruise, but I can see how you'd feel "out of it" by being so far away. I did take an Illuminations cruise and it was spectacular. At Epcot, you are much closer to the action and I would advise you to not let your Wishes experience keep you from doing the Illuminations cruise. They are definately two different experiences.

Looking forward to reading more about your solo trip.

Welcome. Yes, a solo trip is totally different than any other. I think you have to be pretty secure to do it. I still wouldn't give up going with my family, ever. I just have to have both!

I felt the same way about the KTTK tour. I just wanted to know more. I think he'd be even better if he guided the Backstage Magic tour - all day and three parks, but I think he specializes in the MK. It isn't even his full-time job, he's an actor by trade (go figure).

As for an Illuminations Cruise, I don't know if I could ever justify the cost unless there were a lot of others to share it. Even then, I think it would be out of my league. A great dinner or tour would suit me much better. Maybe someday though...

Hey Anne - just chiming in! Just started reading today since I saw you went solo. Love your trippie! I just went on my first solo three weeks ago (seems like years ago!) without kids and DH and loooooved it! It's funny how I seemed to do a lot of what you did - I stayed at Pop two floors below exactly where you were, I used those foam earplugs, I decorated my window (with Easter stickies), and so on. Wishes is my favourite as well. I stayed for five nights/six days and had a wonderful trip.
Can't wait to hear more!

Love to see a trip report from you! Any plans?

I'd be willing to bet that Wishes was a little better for you lovebirds than for me. It's still my favorite fireworks, no matter where I see it from.

Hi Anne. I've been following along the whole time. Really enjoying your report. Gives me lots of confidence in my own future solo trip! Thanks. I'm gonna keep reading til the end!

Hey, when you start planning, you'll find lots of support on the DIS. Be sure to find me and ask questions!

War Eagle right back atcha. I'm in the final stretch.

.

Welll............ It was nice, but truthfully I enjoyed watching Wishes from Main Street better - huge castle, loud soundtrack, up close and personal with the fireworks, ect... We were in heaven though after being married only a few days :cloud9:

Terrific report!! I love all the details. Even though finding it has now made me late for work:surfweb:

I have my first solo trip coming up in October and can't wait. Your report has me thinking about the tour in MK...

Can't wait for more!!

Thanks, you'll have a fabulous time. Personally, the Backstage Magic tour is the absolute best, but you pay the big bucks for it. Includes a full lunch as well and you get so much cool information you'll feel like a Disney pro.

My dd16 and I took the Backstage Magic Tour a couple of weeks ago. It was fantastic! My daughter doesn't like to "learn" while on vacation or go to museums so I had some fear that she would be totally bored and not enjoy the tour. Boy was I wrong. She had a wonderful time, took in a lot of information, and, I believe, felt pretty special that she learned so many secrets (that the rest of the family doesn't know) about WDW. After the tour we went to DTD, which she also loves, to shop at our leisure and have a nice dinner together. All in all, a great mother/daughter day. We didn't get back to my in-laws house in The Villages (where we stayed the week before Easter) until close to 11pm--a very long day.

I highly recommend this to anyone who has already been to the World a few times. Worth every penny!

At 7pm, I’m up and ready to take on the rest of the night. The nap was just the ticket. For a very brief moment on the way to my room earlier I thought I might actually be approaching Disney burnout. Say it isn’t so. I had a twinge of being ready to go home, I was tired. The nap cured that completely. I’m already ready to come back with the kids as soon as possible. These things pass quickly with me.

I head to the bus stop and I’m on an Epcot bus again at 7:09. Less than 15 minutes later, I’m walking into Epcot. As I pass Spaceship Earth, it looks like it’s pretty consistently open now. At 7:34, I need something to eat. I slip into the Land to get something at Sunshine Seasons. It must be past dinner time because all the lines are closed except the bakery, Asian Noodle and the Grill. I got the Garlic Chicken Noodle Soup, tabouleh and… you guessed it… crème brulee and Diet Coke. Now I’ve never had tabouleh before. Something else new for this trip.

2008019and10064.jpg

Unfortunately, I wasn’t all that impressed with it. I thought it might be good in some kind of wrap though, just not by itself. Maybe warm. The soup looked quite ordinary but tasted great with a solid Asian flavor. At 8:00, I packed up my crème brulee and Diet Coke and headed for the World Showcase to stake out a spot for Illuminations. My last Illuminations view wasn’t all that great.

My first choice was Showcase Plaza, the big concrete patch between the souvenir shops at the bottom of World Showcase. But they had it roped off for some sort of special event. I love watching the fireworks from here, you can really feel the heat from them. So I move on up toward Canada. As I’m walking there’s a line of businessmen being guided by CMs with little flashing wands… presumably to go down to my favorite spot that I’m missing this trip. There’s oodles of these guys and I’m jealous. Special treatment, bah humbug.

At 8:10 I’m checking out another favorite place… down by the water at UK behind the Yorkshire County Fish Shop. Can’t go down there either… another special event. Tables, chafing dishes, white tablecloths, the works. Ok, two spots gone. Moving on.

Now I’m heading across the bridge between UK and France where the International Gateway is. That wonderful area down by the water is… you guessed it… all decked out for a special event. What is Disney thinking? They reserve all the best areas all on one night for all these special groups, I assume conventions of some sort. These people don’t even look very interested in being there as far as I can tell.

Well, I give up. Three for three. I plop myself down at the rail of the bridge and I savor my dessert and drink. There’s no one here yet, so I just watch the people go by. It’s still only 8:15 and Illuminations always starts promptly at 9. People begin to slowly fill in around me. After awhile, I find it prudent to stand up. People will pretend you aren’t there if you’re sitting. I’m very glad I brought my lightweight jacket with me tonight, it’s perfect for the weather. Even with the people around me, it’s quite peaceful here as well. By showtime, the crowd on the bridge is 4 to 5 people deep and there are at least 5 Illuminations Cruise boats below us.

2008019and10070.jpg

Evidently this is where they watch the fireworks from. I always wondered about that, I figured they couldn’t actually go out into the water during the show. So essentially, they’re paying the big bucks to get the exact same view I’m getting by standing there. Granted they don’t have to pay to get into Epcot and they don’t have to deal with the crowds to get out. But, in my case, that’s not a problem in the least. I like my way better (although, my way three ideas ago would have been even better—grumble, grumble).

The show starts. The people standing on either side of me have never seen it. I like that. Maybe I feel superior or something but I’ll never admit it. It’s just neat to hear people when they see these things for the first time. I couldn’t feel the heat from the fire here, but it was a very nice view anyway. I soaked it all in. This will be my last time to see Illuminations until I come back with my family. This is such a fabulous show, I just can’t explain it. It’s moving, it’s fascinating and it’s LOUD! The fire, the globe, all of it really gets to me. I get chills when the music starts, it’s wonderfully familiar. (Oh yes, and notice at the bottom left and right of the picture below... all those "special" guests that got the good spots.)

2008019and10072.jpg

2008019and10083.jpg

I must tell you though, I sincerely miss the Tapestry of Nations parade and it’s music. They always play a little of it after Illuminations as you leave the park. Very nostalgic for me.

At 9:14, the last boom goes off and the show is over. Another one bites the dust, so to speak. Now, I’ve just got to ask… fireworks leave tons of casings behind, right? Are all those casings at the bottom of the lake in World Showcase? With this show going on 365 times a year, I’ve got to think that the bottom of this lake has raised a few feet. Do they dredge the thing at all? I’d love to know this little bit of trivia.

I decide to take the long way around World Showcase, toward Mexico. Now that group of snobby businessmen are following the little blinking wands from Showcase Plaza up to the International Gateway. Scum. (I’m not bitter, no.)

I’m feeling very good right now. That nap did the trick. I could walk all over Epcot. I sort of did. I called the kids on the way out. My son is working on his Cub Scout derby car and wanted to tell me all about it. I just might come back here tomorrow for some street performers. I must tell you, being in Epcot after Illuminations if fabulous. Hanging back behind all those people rushing to get out. I took a bunch of nighttime photos and took my time.

2008019and10101.jpg

It’s 9:52 and I still have not exited the park. I pass by the Epcot 25th anniversary exhibit. I’m able to get into the hallway where the timeline is, so I look at that awhile, but I can’t get into the exhibit room. It’s closed up for the night.

2008019and10096.jpg

There’s a good reason to make a trip back here tomorrow. I’m quite disappointed they didn’t make a much bigger deal out of the 25th anniversary of the park that Walt so badly wanted to succeed. This was his baby as I understand it. Magic Kingdom was just the means to this end… a way to get the cash to build his true dream.

At 10:04, I stopped in at The Art of Disney to drool over all the works there. I checked out the book section. I adore books on Imagineering and such. I took pictures of the books I want to get in the future. At 10:08, I left the park finally. At the bus stop a CM asks where I’m headed and sends me to the Old Key West stop. They combine the bus stops this late at night. There aren’t very many people out here at all right now. The busses are few and far between. But I’d much rather wait here late with a few people for a longer period of time than wait earlier with a ton of people for just as long. So much less stressful.

At 10:26, I’m on a bus back to Pop. Twenty minutes later I was cruising the Pop gift shop and food court. I didn’t feel like getting anything so I walked out toward the pool to get some night shots of the resort. Night time anywhere in Disney is just magical. It’s my favorite time. I’m a night person anyway. Getting up for rope drop is not an easy thing for me. Never has been. I walked out to the “end” of Generation Gap Bridge. It’s really just a temporary end since they MIGHT open up to the Legendary Years someday. Possibly not in my lifetime though, I fear. I take pictures looking back at Pop from here. Now this is peaceful. Getting the theme of this trip now? Peaceful is the word. Just lovely.

2008019and10132.jpg

So back to my room I go for my last sleep in a Disney bed for awhile. Yes, it’s a sad thing. I’ve been sleeping very well here. I still wear earplugs though, I’m a pretty light sleeper. You really can hear your neighbors through the walls.

Tuesday, January 10, 2008

Last day here. The cool thing is, though, that my flight doesn’t leave until 9pm. Yep, I planned it that way. Aren’t I sneaky?

My main plan for today is the Wild By Design Tour at Animal Kingdom. After that, the day is open to do any of the things I’ve missed so far this trip. Mickey calls me at 6:30am, but my backup alarm was evidently set for PM. Whew. Remember that backup guys! I quickly get cleaned up and I’m out the door by 7:15—short hair is a wonderful thing. It’s very foggy. Evidently someone was conducting a controlled burn somewhere and it combined with the fog to cause a horrible 70 car pileup on the interstate. I was hearing about it all morning. The real world has encroached on my magical trip.

At 7:30, I checked my bags into Magical Express and got my boarding pass for my flight. I’ve got an extra bag going home this trip. I had one crammed in my suitcase for the souvenirs I was planning to get. Definitely needed it. I didn’t want to check my backpack and my laptop though. So I crammed my laptop into my backpack. I didn’t really think about leaving it at Pop while I went to the parks. I didn’t take into account that I would have to come back here anyway to catch the DME bus back to the airport. So I lugged that thing around with me all day for no reason. Live and learn.

When I left my room, they had not dropped off my room charges yet. So I headed back there to see that they finally had. I checked it, nothing unexpected except for the fact that I thought I had spent more than I did. That’s good unexpected. So it was off to the bus stop.

At 7:38, the AK bus was waiting for me. Off to my tour! At the AK entrance, I was subjected to my first bag check of the entire trip. Up until now, I had everything in my cargo pants pockets and it worked like a true charm. Wish I could do that in the summer, but you really need more stuff in the summer heat. But there I am, letting the guy rummage through my things. I had noticed that the AK Christmas tree was still up and it was LIT! The CM said it would be coming down tonight. Yeah, after I’m gone of course.

The tour was to begin at 8:30am. Our guide is Aaron.

2008019and10138.jpg

Sorry, lousy picture of him. We all get our nifty little earpieces and receivers. Did I tell you I really like these? Oh yes, I do. I duck out for a moment before the tour begins to check my backpack into a locker at the kennel area. I thought it was rather strange to have a kennel right outside Animal Kingdom. Locker prices have changed. They charged me $7. That sucks.

The Wild By Design tour guide was nowhere near as good as Matthew at the Keys to the Kingdom Tour but he was adequate. He was not nearly as entertaining or knowledgeable but I really enjoyed the tour anyway. He led us up toward Expedition Everest through an empty park (it wasn’t yet open) pointing out various things.

2008019and10140.jpg

I still learned a few new things. We all got to get EE fastpasses just before they let the general population into the park. We got to hear about various animals and their habitats from some of the keepers in the park. They really know their stuff and sincerely care about their animals and their work. They are wonderful to listen to. Makes you want to have their jobs.

2008019and10172.jpg

At 9:55, we’re off down the Maharajah Jungle Trek. I had done the Pangani Forest trail earlier in my vacation and luckily didn’t take the time for this one. How opportune! He showed us a bunch of Hidden Mickeys along the trail with the tigers. I took pictures of them, but I may not be able to find them again!

2008019and10188.jpg

2008019and10190.jpg

2008019and10191.jpg

This tour really makes me want to take the Backstage Safari as soon as I can. I’d love to see the animals behind the scenes. Disney is legendary regarding the care of their animals. Maybe I can sneak over here next trip with the family.

We had a quick continental breakfast at Pizzafari. I’ve never cared for pastries and such for breakfast but they did have some very good fruit. I got my Diet Coke too. At 11:30, the tour was done. I got my pin, filled out my questionnaire and headed up to Asia to use my EE fastpass. Then I think I’ll mosey over to the Magic Kingdom.

One thing I absolutely love about Animal Kingdom is the personal attention. If you want to know something about an animal or exhibit, there’s almost always a CM somewhere around that can answer all your questions. You don’t just read the signs… in fact you won’t see many signs at all. It’s really much more than a zoo. It’s more of an experience than that. Sometimes the CMs will have something with them pertaining to the animal in question too, like a skin or skull. That really gets the kids’ attention.

I’m up at Expedition Everest at 11:48 and the fastpass line is empty. I take my last ride and went back to the entrance via Dinoland. I briefly considered doing Primeval Whirl (I love that ride) but decided it’s much more fun with friends or family. I picked up my backpack at the lockers, got $5 back (what?) and headed out. That was a nice last visit to AK for this trip.

At 12:40, I’m on a bus to the Transportation and Ticket Center so I can get to the Magic Kingdom. I’m vacillating whether to go there or Downtown Disney. At least I have planned options! I decided on MK, so I got on the monorail at 12:51. Ten minutes later, I’m off the monorail and on my way in to Magic Kingdom for the last time this trip. My plan is to go to Pinocchio’s Village Haus to try the Panini I’ve heard so much about and take a look a those Figaro Fries. I dropped off my backpack at the locker rental (still fuming over the fact I brought it and am wasting time having to store it everywhere I go). I didn’t get a receipt from the AK locker rental so they almost made me pay all over again. They had pity on the poor lady who must have been new to the system at AK, and on me.

It’s pretty well packed at MK today. It’s just a Tuesday. I decided on the Turkey Panini and passed on the Fries until next trip. They sound pretty out-there. On a side note, I’ve seen quite a few tour groups roaming around with their little guides with their little flags. One group had about 20 to 30 people following one little lady. It would seem more prudent to get in groups of 4 or 5 like-minded people, make your plans and move around in smaller packs. They would get so much more done and probably have a much better time. That’s just my opinion of course. Maybe they like all being together, or someone is a control freak. I shouldn’t talk, that would be describing me.

At 1:48, I’m done eating. That was uneventful. I didn’t care too much for the Panini, I’d give it about a 5 out of 10.

Pinocchio's was horribly loud. I wish it had a second floor like Columbia Harbor House so that you could sit, eat and watch over the people in Fantasyland. Wouldn’t that be cool? Now I want to head over to Epcot to see that exhibit. I’m off.

I picked up my backpack at the lockers yet again (thank goodness you only pay once per day). At 2:04, I’m on the monorail to the TTC again. I switched to the Epcot monorail at 2:15 and I took the long ride there. I guess I’ve never done this because I’d never ridden the monorail inside Epcot before. It loops around inside and then stops at the Epcot station. Either that or I just haven’t been very observant on previous trips—which is entirely possible and highly probable. As I rode, I could still see the smoke from the controlled burn earlier this morning. At 2:24, I’m getting off at the Epcot station. I stow my stuff yet again and head to the exhibit.

The Epcot 25th Anniversary exhibit is tucked away where it’s difficult to find and just not very prominent. I’m very disappointed in Disney for that. However, I did enjoy it. Lots of old memorabilia and photos. I read everything. I did the same thing in the One Man’s Dream exhibit on my last solo trip. I spent no less than 2 hours in there. Would have driven my kids out of their minds had they been with me. However, there was only enough stuff here to occupy me for about 30 minutes.

At 3:00, I happened to remember that I’m just in time to hit the Disney Visa meet and greet again! THIS time I can get it right, AND I have my card with me as well. Woo hoo! There’s only one other family in line so I get in quickly. I’m greeted by Mickey, Pluto and my hero Minnie. She’s a woman of the new millennium I tell you. Perfect! I did the whole picture thing with all of them but then I made double sure that I got two pictures with just Minnie and I. Turned out to be a photo shoot of like 15 photos. That guy shoots fast. I hung around the area for just a little bit, got my backpack out of the locker and then went into the camera shop to see if the photos had been uploaded yet. It was a pretty slow day for them, so they were already there 30 minutes after the session. I picked out the photo I wanted for my free 5x7 and stuck it in my backpack. With a laptop in it, that sucker’s heavy.

Ok, it’s 3:40 and I want to go to Downtown Disney one last time. The Earl of Sandwich is calling me. Of course, there’s no direct route from Epcot to DTD. I pull out my phone and pull up the transportation wizard website. My best bet will be to go to Caribbean Beach Resort and hop a bus there to Epcot. It says that will take 45 minutes. I figured I’d take whichever bus happened to show up first at Epcot—Pop or CBR. Turned out to be CBR after all. It was 3:47. I sat at the CBR Jamaica bus stop for what seemed an eternity and the DTD bus finally came. I arrived at DTD around 4:31. Wow. That WAS 45 minutes. I’m impressed with the accuracy of that transportation wizard site.

At 4:48pm, I’m sitting at my beloved Earl of Sandwich munchin’ on my favorite meal. Got that Cannonballs sandwich again. Today I’m sitting out on the porch and I can see the Board Game Christmas tree from where I sit.

2008019and10211.jpg

Very appropriate since I sell board games on eBay. It’s still Christmas though and it irked me. My husband called to let me know our neighbor would be at the airport to pick me up since our kids would be asleep in bed when I arrive. I had bought some very yummy looking bread pudding at Earl’s so I wrapped it up and stuffed it into my backpack for later.

In the World of Disney, I bought a really big Imagineering book that I had seen before and wanted. Great for the plane trip home. Lots of great stuff in it. I love my little Imagineering Guides that I’ve got on Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom and Epcot. The tour guide today said that the Studios don’t have their own book yet because everything is still in flux. Name change, new attractions and such. I’ll be buying that one as soon as it comes out too. I figured I’d better beat feet back to Pop to be there in time for the DME bus. I hate the fact that you have to leave three hours before your flight but I know from experience that you need every minute of that three hours sometimes.

Looky here. I’m at the DTD bus stop and a Pop Century bus is right there waiting for me. Twice in one trip? Oh my. I guess that was my “dream” come true this vacation. Since Typhoon Lagoon came out of refurbishment yesterday, it’s back on the bus route so we had to stop there on our way to Pop from Downtown. Can’t wait to take the kids here. They’ve never done the water parks at Disney. We’re always here in the colder months.

At 5:47, the bus pulled into Pop and I went through Everything Pop trying to trade off the last of my pins to get some Donald for my daughter and Stitch for my son. Donald was much easier than Stitch to find this trip so I ended up with more for her. I made my way out to wait for the DME bus but I waited more toward the entrance than toward the bus area. So I didn’t hear some guy telling everyone that the Cruise Line bus was the one going back to the airport. I almost missed it altogether except that I tried to board a DME bus that was arriving. Close call there. The Beatles’ Penny Lane was playing and I thought of my daughter. It was 74 degrees here and freezing back in Dallas. Goody.

The ride back to the airport was solemn and quiet. No anticipation, no giggly people. Just people who needed a vacation from their vacation. I figure I accomplished at least 90% of the goals I’d set for myself this trip. The only regret I had is not scheduling more free time at the Studios. I really want to see more of the street actors, so that gets put on the list for next time. I didn’t get to see the Captain Jack that I really liked at the Pirate Tutorial. I didn’t ride the Carrousel or get my eggrolls (not for lack of trying). I skipped the Behind the Seeds tour (the kids can do that one with me if we want.) I didn’t go to the Boardwalk at night. But I did SO many things that I had intended to do that I’m quite satisfied with this trip. I think it went even better than my first solo trip. Maybe this will become my every-three-year tradition for myself. So I guess my next solo trip will be in LATE January of 2011 (don’t want to be there for the Christmas decorations after Christmas again).

I got to the airport at 7:00 and went straight to the security line. I always hate this part. The button on my cargo pants popped off a couple of days ago, so I’ve relied on that army belt to keep my pants up. Well… you can figure this one out. The belt has to come off, as well as the shoes and everything out of the pockets. Ok, cargo pants, not good at an airport. Noted. I’m holding up my pants with one hand while I try to get through the security line and gather my things with the other hand. What fun.

I had totally forgotten the layout of the airport because I got on the shuttle to my terminal only to find that there’s nothing to eat or do out there. Poop. Back on the shuttle I go to the hub where life is a little interesting since I have to wait another 1 1/2 hours to get on my plane. The bread pudding in my backpack is whispering sweet nothings to me so I sit outside the Disney Store and I savor that awhile. Ok, that took all of 10 minutes. Now what? I walk through some of the stores looking at stuff I’ll never buy. Checked out some of the new books that have come out. I figure I’d better get to my gate so I have to go disrobe all over again and do the no-button dance.

At 8:34, I’m sitting at the gate talking on the phone to my kids before they go to bed. This, my dear, is the sad end to my vacation. There is no fanfare at the Orlando airport, no more anticipation, no more excitement. Just looking back over your shoulder. It’s quite melancholy in some ways, but knowing that you’ll be coming back and having a whole different kind of Disney vacation to plan for is reassuring. Next trip is camping at Fort Wilderness, so that’s a whole other ball of wax in the planning arena.

I board the plane and say goodbye to my happy place (WDW—NOT Orlando airport!) I’m pretty sure we had to taxi to Tampa in order to take off.

Turns out that my husband was waiting for me at the DFW airport. He put the neighbor in charge of the sleeping kids. I think he was anxious for the woman of the house to be IN the house. It’s hard for a guy to work full time and get kids to all that they have to do and get them fed every day. He’s not used to that stuff. I think he was quite relieved to have me back. It only took a day or so to get back into the swing of things. Now I check the boards every day to see what the Pic of the Day thread has in store. It keeps me going. I try not to spend too much time there though, it can be depressing as well.

So until next trip… forget about your worries and your strife!

Great trip report! It makes me want to go on a solo trip. My next trip is planned for 2010(for 25th wedding anniversary) I don't think I can make it without a Disney trip until then.

Thanks! Oooh. I don't know if I could wait that long either. That's a lot of planning time.

Hope you get to go sooner! Solo is a GREAT alternative.

Thanks for sharing your trip report with us , a really enjoyable read.:thumbsup2 .

I've so enjoyed your trip report. It came at just the right time - as I was having 2nd thoughts on my planned solo trip this fall. Your report reminded me why I want to go and the fun that can be had-- all on my terms!! A few questions...

I took a bunch of nighttime photos and took my time.

Your nighttime photos are amazing!! Any tips? I assume you use a tripod?

Any idea how long this exhibit will be up? I'd love to see it but have a feeling that by October it will be gone...

Do you feel at all odd doing this solo? I'd love to try it.

I pull out my phone and pull up the transportation wizard website.

What is this?? Sounds like something I need to know about!! I love all the tips you learn on the DIS!!

Thanks again for your trip report. I really enjoyed it!! :thumbsup2

All I have is a point and shoot, but I do have a little bitty tripod. It's about 5 inches tall and has three bendable legs that you can wrap around a pole or set up flat. It fits very well in my cargo pants pocket. I love it! I have a setting on my camera for nighttime landscapes where it holds the shutter open for a couple of seconds and uses no flash.

Wish I could tell you that. I would think it will be up for awhile but others would probably know better than me.

Yeah, it was a little strange. I think it was the only time during the entire trip I felt self-concious about being a solo. They're putting on a show for someone who obviously knows it's just a person inside the suit. Makes you sort of think "come on, it's just us, you can talk!" But of course they never would. I'd still do it again, just for the picture that you get out of it.

Love the entire website. It's ourlaughingplace.com. There's other fun stuff there as well. Hopefully the link isn't blocked... http://www.ourlaughingplace.com/asp/twiz.aspx
That'll take you right to the transportation wizard.

Thanks again for your trip report. I really enjoyed it!! :thumbsup2

Come back and ask more anytime, or PM me!

Thanks!

I have really enjoyed your trip report! It was interesting to get the perspective of someone doing what they wanted to do, not just going here or there for the family.:) I'd love to try it someday myself.:thumbsup2
Thanks again for sharing your experience!

Hey Anne! Sorry I dropped off a little while back, but I just finished catching up on your adventures :)

I'm glad that you were able to do so much of what you set out to for this trip! I very much enjoyed the detail you put into everything you saw and did and your fireworks pictures were AMAZING :thumbsup2

Wonderful TR - thank you for continuing with it

Oh, and have you been able to take out your new tent trailer yet? We bought one a few weeks ago and took it out weekend before last. They are such a great alternative to tenting or dealing with a full-blown trailer.

Have a great day!
