We were on the 7 day Eastern that started on Jan 19, 2002 (and enjoyed it very much!). When we arrived in St Maartin, we saw a very elaborate private ship tied up at the port next to us. It was named 'Tatoosh'. If you spent any time on the starboard side of the ship on deck 4 or above and happened to look along the pier, you would not have missed it. It was also very visible if you walked along the pier to go on a shore excursion or to get to town. The Tatoosh was also seen in other ports around the Eastern Caribbean and was also in Nassua in February of this year. I believe it's home port is in St Johns.

It had a helicopter tied to the top deck, a speed boat, a sail boat, two jet skis, and a fishing boat. It was also more than 300 feet long and was very highly polished. The decks were made of teak wood and one was stainless steel.

My DW and I were walking along deck 10 and looked down on it, it was very impressive. One of the Magic's officers was also strolling in the same area and we talked about it with him. He said that everyone thought it belonged to the man that was the personal attorney for Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft.

I did a lot of searching on the Internet when we returned home to find more information about it and a few weeks ago, I found some answers.

It isn't owned by Bill Gate's attorney, but it is named after an Island near Redmond, Wa. It is actually owned by Keith McCaw, one of the brothers that founded McCaw Communications, a cellular company that was bought out by AT&T around '94. Keith and his brother, Craig McCaw are very interested in yachting and own several large ships. In fact, Craig McCaw owns the largest private ship in the U.S., Le Grande Blue, it is 350 feet long.

Craig McCaw founded the OneWorld Challenge campaign to help fund their America's Cup efforts in Auckland, New Zealand.

Here's the short version of the Stats for the Tatoosh:
302 feet long
two 16 cylinder diesel engines, cruises at 20 knots

It has medical quality air conditioning thru out.

has 9 tenders onboard: 42 ft picnic boat, 43 ft sail boat, 42 ft fiberglass infaltable, 7.3 meter Halmatic (?), 18 ft Nautica, 12 ft Avon Jetboat, two Bombardier JetSki boats, 4.2 meter life boat.

One Euro EC 35 Helicopter

It has a swimming pool and a spa. The swimming pool has a floor that will come up flush with the stainless steel deck, using 3 motors.

It has a Lobster Tank on board

It has two water cannons on each side of the bridge deck, aft. Their primary use is to repel intruders, but they could be used to fight fires, if necessary.

It has a Local Area Network with at least 15 computers connected, with various printers, copiers, and fax machines.

It has a fireplace in the main salon area, a cinema / theatre area, and a crew gym.

The owner has a suite and there are two cabins for children. There are numerous guest cabins and crew quarters.

Here's a link to a Webpage I found that lists more information than the owner would like to have known, I'm sure:
Tatoosh

I couldn't find any mention of the cost to purchase it or for annual maintenance. I couldn't find the number of passengers and crew it would accomodate either.

It is quite a ship!

A friend of mine was in the islands for Christmas and talked about an incredible yacht at the pier where the cruise ships came in. She mentioned a helicopter and said it was owned by someone in the cellular business. This must be the one. Boy, she wasn't kidding when she spoke of its size and features!

Cool--we saw the ship in St Martin on the 1/12, and wondered who owned it. It was impressive.

Wow! I thought Bill Gates himself owned it. We asked crew members aboard the Magic and they said he was the owner. Thanks for the correct info! We took pictures of it ourselves. Oh how the rich live!

I found several references to Paul Allen, the CEO of Microsoft and his yacht, Meduse ('only' 198 feet long) and that Bill Gates was on it to spend New Year's with him.

I didn't find anything that said that Bill Gates has a yacht of his own, but hard to believe he doesn't.

Paul Allen just paid 5 million dollars for a new berth in Antibes, France apparently for a new and larger boat he is having built.

Paul Allen is also the newest large investor in the OneWorld Challenge for the next America's Cup in Auckland, New Zealand in 2003.

Apparently, they compete in the America's Cup as well as on the business field. The OneWorld Challenge will be competing against Larry Ellison from Oracle Racing (Larry Ellison is the CEO of Oracle, intense rivals of Microsoft) and Hasso Plattner of the software firm SAP, who has given money to the Kiwi team.

What a tough life!

Minor details...

Steve Ballmer is the CEO of Microsoft.

Paul Allen retired with his massive Microsoft wealth years ago and has been working hard to find ways to spend his money (such as buying the Seattle Seahawks).

Thanks for the info guys about the Tatoosh....what a ship!! Wish I had some of that wealth!! :) WOW

Wow, that certainly is something to be appreciated. Hard to believe anything can be so beautiful. Imagine....spending a month aboard that beauty......

Yep, sorry, I forgot, it is Steve Ballmer.

I just read up on Paul Allen, he was a co-founder of Microsoft and left the company in 1983, he owns the part of Microsoft that Bill Gates doesn't. He has had Hodgkins Disease since '83.

Paul Allen also owns the Portland Trailblazers Basketball Team.

He also owned the majority interest in Ticketmaster before it went public. He also owned the Asymetrix company that made the ToolBook product. He also owns $500 million of the Dreamworks SKG. Now he has a couple of cable tv companies.

This is a link to a biography on Paul Allen :

He's big in the Seattle Yacht Club too, which is how he got into this thread in the first place.

Well, it seems that I stopped my search for information on the Tatoosh a couple months short.

My original info was dated August 7, 2001 and it showed that Craig McCaw was the owner of the Tatoosh and that it started cruising in May of 2000.

I just found out that due to 'leisure cutbacks', Craig McCaw has sold a lot of his leisure toys, starting last fall.

His technology investments went from $9 billion to $1 billion.

He sold a Gulfstream Jet to Jim Carrey for $38 million.

He sold a house for $20 million, and another for $7 million.

He sold the Tatoosh to Paul Allen for $100 million, but that included two helicopters and the 9 tenders.

He has a ranch for sale in California and his Private Island in Vancouver, B.C. is also for sale.

Anyway, here's the link to the article about the sale:
USA Today Article from November

The Tatoosh was recently spotted in New Orleans.

sorry for the wrong information.

You are right, it was a gorgeous ship. I was told by locals during scuba excursion it carried a crew of 33 ( not sure if thats correct.....but its what I was told, and a guess to keep something like that in the water was 10 million a year ) I still show people the pic's I took of the Tatoosh, everyone can not believe what they see.
Thanks for doing the research and coming up the the additional info, and wasn't that a great DCL cruise the were on !! Definitely can't wait until Oct 2002 3 day cruise ( $99 special...yeaaaa)
