We have been advised that this is our best choice for a new front lawn. We are in north GA, northwest of Atlanta. Our current "grass" is fescue and looks awful and has plenty of weeds mixed in. IN our first home we had centipede and loved it - so not familiar with zoysia;) Any lovers / haters of this type of lawn!

:rotfl::rotfl: I know - you never know what will pop up on the DIS!!!

Thanks!

We live in Texas and Zoysia is being put down in many new subdivisions, especially in the Austin area. Two of my brothers have Zoysia. We have St. Augustine. I can't for the life of me remember anything about the texture or look of their grass. I know that it doesn't use as much water as St. Augustine. Sorry, not much help.

I live in NJ and have many big spots of zoysia on my lawn. I can't wait until it spreads to cover my entire yard. I like this grass as it stays green all summer, doesn't grow as fast as other grasses, and requires very little water. Since we have 4 season here the grass goes dormant (brown) from Oct to the beginning of April and looks like straw. In a warm climate it would probably always be green. As far as weeds go we use a service to weed and feed our lawn.

ITA with Nohal on the Zoysia. We've got some in our yard, and I can't wait until it spreads over the rest of the yard. It's so thick and soft to walk in barefoot.

Since we already had a lawn, we bought plugs and put those in, so it's taking a while for it to spread everywhere, but it's getting there.

Will it grow in the shade, or does it need full sun? We are contemplating putting it in our backyard, but it is mostly shady.

Yes! What Nohal said..... But, I have never fed or used weed protection on the zoysia in the backyard & it has no weeds. It is so dense, the weeds do not grow in it.

Love it because it is drought tolerant & slow growing & no weeds. Holds up great to the kids/dogs running on it, but it does look crummy all winter (up here in NJ anyway).

My husband is a superintendent for a golf course & grows grass for a living (in GA!)

He says zoysia is more winter hardy and it's a nice stand of grass. He says it will grow in shade and doesn't need a lot of tending to, but is not as carefree as Centipede. He says he has concerns about Centipede growing that far north but said if you have the money and have more experience with Centipede you could try it, but it might not grow well.

Hope that helps!

Thanks to everyone for the responses....we are not going to try centipede - all the landscape people advised against it - just really liked it when we could have it. I have been advised that the Jamur and Zenith types of Zoysia do well in the shade, as we also have a sun/shade mix. Glad to hear that it seems to be a "good" grass to have. I am seeing that it is not very lovely in winter though :goodvibes
