One shouldn't assume that taping a toe is always the best answer. Bruising into the foot can be a metatarsal fracture or a displaced bone that taping isn't going to help. Get an xray. Oh, and soaking does nothing for swelling(actually makes it worse). Elevation helps.
Here is a 3 month update. Toe still hurts and I can see the bone sticking out the side of my toe. I reinjured it in September. Finally went to doctor after having an xray, the toe is broken at the base where it connects to the foot is the best I can describe it. Since its not healing he sent me for a ct scan which showed no cartiledge forming which means it will never heal. Surgery is the last option and doesn't sound pleasant. Doctor recommended a bone growth stimulator. It is a small machine that you put on the broken bone for 20minutes a day and the sound waves emitted from the machine are supposed to help heal the bone. I'm hoping that this will work and was wondering if anyone has every heard of someone who used this or if you have used it yourself.
Our practice uses bone stimulators all the time, so it's worth a shot, but most likely this will need surgical intervention to stabilize it and THEN a bone stim. Moral of the story, never assume you can just tape a broken toe. Sounds like you have a doc who is on the right track to help now.
